00:00Hello and welcome to Shop Smart Save Money, where this week we've got a very important
00:08reminder for you. Next Sunday the 30th of March is a very special day for many.
00:14It is indeed. It's Mother's Day. You haven't forgotten, have you? You had? Don't worry.
00:21In today's very special edition of the programme, we're going to help you find tips, treats
00:24and bouquets on a budget to make it a day to remember.
00:28Plus the usual host of great deals and savings to boot.
00:36But first, our team here have been scouting for savings so you don't have to. And we're
00:41starting with some of the best offers out there for Mother's Day. If you're taking your mum out
00:46for a meal, here's a sneaky tip. Several chain eateries are offering Mother's Day extras for free.
00:53Book at Bills and you can get a free glass of Prosecco or a free dessert for your mum.
00:57While mothers receive a free cocktail of their choice at Las Iguanas when you book before the
01:0329th of March. And at Miller and Carter Steakhouse, if you book a Mother's Day meal for after 8pm,
01:09tables of four or more will get a bottle of fizz on the house. Oh, we love a freebie. And here's
01:15another tip. If you're treating mum to a day out or if you're a mum wanting a day trip with the
01:20family, there are plenty of attractions offering free entry for mums. For instance, Longleat Safari
01:26Park and Mansion has this offer. Mums go free on both the 29th and 30th of March when you book
01:33with the code MUM25. While Northern Ireland's Royal Residence Hillsborough Castle is offering
01:40free tickets to their gorgeous spring gardens for mums on mothering Sunday weekend. If you want to
01:45find out more, the website Day Out With The Kids currently has a list of attractions with Mother's
01:50Day discounts. Just search mums to find that particular blog. Now, if you want to push the
01:56boat out, how about a gift to make your mum feel iconic? This made for an icon beauty box at M&S
02:04has pampering, bath and beauty items worth over £130 in it, including the likes of Clinique,
02:11L'Occitane, Bloom and Blossom and more. But you can snap it up for just £30 while stocks last.
02:17Never mind mum, be an icon and gift it to yourself. Thank you very much. In other non-mum related news, over at
02:24Luggage Superstore, there is a great offer on this Samsonite cabin suitcase. It's down from £220
02:31to £99.95. And finally, for some family fun for less, have a look at this end of season sale at
02:37happypuzzle.co.uk. They've got up to 80% off selected lines, including Snakes and Ladders Unleashed,
02:45which was £19.99 and now is just £3.99. Or this none of a kind brain teaser, which was £12.99
02:53and is now just £2.59. Don't forget, check the retailers websites for full terms and conditions
03:01and happy deal hunting. Still to come, Georgie is saving money by growing her own food. If you
03:07shop smart, you won't need green fingers, a greenhouse or even a garden. We've got more gift
03:14ideas for mum. Pop the bottom and you've got your little bouquet. Look at that. Nice. And for new
03:22parents, John is testing multi-purpose buggies in his premium versus budget test. It's quite
03:28versatile, isn't it? It does seem really versatile actually. Okay, right now it's time for the blind
03:35test. We've got a panel of testers, one product, three different price points and we're going to
03:42see which one they think is best. As always, we're keeping the brand and prices secret, so they pick
03:48a winner on performance alone. This week we're doing hair straighteners. A product which you'll be surprised
03:55to hear I know nothing about. Mum, Maxine and twins Lacey and Paige all like dressing to impress
04:03and regularly use hair straighteners to make sure their hair is on point to match. Lacey, Maxine
04:10and Paige. Okay, so initial reactions. Pick them up, see how they feel, weight, look, all of that. Lacey doesn't
04:18know it, but hers are Cloud 9, the high-end name in straighteners with a price that might make your
04:24hair curl. £219 for their new original iron. Number one feels, well, I'm not really sure.
04:32Oh, these feel quite heavy. Number one's a heavy. Yeah, number one is heavy. Yeah. Mum has no idea
04:39her budget straighteners are over £180 cheaper. The Babyliss Smooth Pro 235s are £34.99.
04:48I think number two is better looking than number one and number three. Okay. It's very smooth and
04:54it's very light slick. Finally, the mid-range straighteners from household name GHD. Their
05:01original hair straightener with coated ceramic floating plates will set you back £110.
05:08So these feel really light. I really like the style, to be honest. So it's even Stevens on
05:14first impressions. Now to straighten some hair. First, to select a temperature. Lacey, your set
05:22of straighteners have a range of 100 to 200 degrees Celsius. Okay, that's the range. I'm
05:29gonna go the hottest. Oh, all the way up to 200, okay. Yeah. Hotter styling temperatures are usually
05:34safe for thicker, curlier hair as compared to fine or damaged hair. Okay, and yours, product
05:41number two, they go from 140 to 235. Right, okay. Where are you gonna take it to? To 235. And yours
05:50doesn't change. The GHDs have a fixed temperature of 185 degrees. Okay, so yeah, I just have to
05:57keep saying. Work with what you've got. Okay. The mid-priced GHDs offer the least choice,
06:04but all heat up in a similar 20 to 30 seconds. So very quickly, we're off. I'm excited. All right,
06:10let's go. Lacey, Maxine and Paige will straighten their hair in the normal way to see how each
06:16device performs. You've taken your first wipe through. Yeah. How did it feel? It's like nearly
06:21getting there to the straight. That's quite quick. The most expensive pair from Cloud9
06:27have vibrating plates, which they claim reduce friction and give a more even heat distribution.
06:34I can feel the heat. Yes. Which I wanted. And as you're pulling, you can feel the vibration.
06:39You can feel the vibration. Yes. Okay, mum, how are you doing? Right, I'm loving this. Oh,
06:44you like those as well? Oh, God, yeah. Look at that. It's really smooth. A strong start from
06:51all three. However, four minutes in and Paige is starting to struggle with the mid-range GHDs,
06:58which are fixed at 185 degrees. I can't get it poker straight because I don't think it's hot
07:04enough for my hair. Okay. Along with temperature variations, straighteners have differences in
07:11shape and coating of the plates. You know, it pulls your hair sometimes. These are just smooth.
07:17Those are really smooth. Yeah. I do find maybe mine's a bit static-y. Okay. A little bit for me.
07:24Is it getting caught as well? Yeah, my hair's getting caught, obviously, around. The plates
07:28are snagging, right? Yeah, they are. They're slightly sharper edged. These are rounded. Okay.
07:35With using these straighteners, it's making my hair very smooth. It's gliding very well over
07:41the hair. Look, Paige is probably having to work harder. Yeah. Because they're not as hot. Yeah.
07:46Mum, can you do the back for me now, please? Sounds like we're at home. The family will now
07:51have a try of each other's straighteners for a better comparison. Oh, it feels quite weird
07:56because of the vibration, but I reckon that's why Lacey's getting a smoother feel to her hair.
08:01I prefer number one now. You do. Hands off. Oh, wow. That's proper smooth.
08:10I like it. Yes. I love mine. Do you? Yeah. It does feel hot, but I just feel like it's
08:17not as smooth as maybe it's the number one. It's missing something. The three seem to agree on
08:22what works and what doesn't. I feel like I'm catching. It's not as smooth. It's not as smooth.
08:28It's not very good, I'm afraid. It's not got the je ne sais quoi. So with looks and performance
08:37tested and still no idea of each model's price or branding, what's the verdict? Well, I feel like
08:45Paige has got the short straw, to be honest. Bless her. You know, it's not straight enough
08:49for me. I feel like she needs more heat. I like mine anyway. I love mine. I'm not going to tell
08:55Lacey hers looks better than mine to be honest. Lacey, yours looks... And it's shining. You can
09:00see the shine. What do you think is the overall winner? I would say one for me. Because of the
09:07vibration of the plate, the smoothness of Lacey's hair, I will go for one. It looks really professional.
09:12It does look professional. Definitely, yeah. You've actually chosen the premium product. It's from
09:18Cloud9 and it's £219. Wow. That's expensive. Yeah. It is expensive. I can see why. Number two,
09:26the budget pair. From Badalysse, they're £34.99. Wow. That's what I like to see. What a massive
09:35difference in price. Huge difference. Now, before we ask you any further questions, number three
09:41were our mid-range. They are from GHD and they are £110. Oh my God. Oh my God. I'm shocked at that.
09:51I'm shocked. I'm actually quite shocked as well. Yeah. Would you change your minds now knowing
09:56the price difference? I'll save up, you know, get these. You would save up? I'd buy these ones. No,
10:02I would go for them definitely. So you're actually saying that you would go for number two? Yes.
10:09Paige? Yeah. For that price, number two. I love these. I always loved them. No, no, you picked
10:14mine. I know, I know, I know I did, but now I know the price. Cloud9's premium product was
10:20exceptional, but so was the price point. For our testers, the Badalysse is the champion when it
10:26comes to value for money. Lacey and Paige, it might make the perfect gift for mum. Thank you
10:32so much for joining us on the test. Thank you so much. It's been a pleasure. Please don't go
10:36anywhere. Coming up after the break, we've got some of the best supermarket deals around.
10:48Welcome back to Shop Smart, Save Money. It's time for The Big Shop, where we bring you some of the
10:53best deals in the supermarkets to save you money this week. Okay, first, please say cheese. Cheese,
11:00but not just any cheese. We are talking two for five Cathedral City cheese at
11:06Morrison's this week instead of 3.75 each, which is a third off. Now, are you mild or strong? I'm
11:12strong. Well, when it comes to cheddar anyway, but the offer applies to these varieties and more.
11:17It's an online exclusive deal, so stick it in your virtual basket before the 25th of March.
11:23Next, we're off to Waitrose, who have an offer on Dorset Cereal's granola this week.
11:27It comes in different flavours, including nutty, berry, and chocolate cherry. Right,
11:32and it's down from 3.75 to 2.50. Now, if your sink is draining slowly or your plug hole is
11:39full of gunk, no more excuses. You can sort it for less this week. At Sainsbury's, this Mr.
11:45Muscle Drain Unclogger is now on offer. It's down from 3.75 to 2.75 with Nectar membership,
11:51so you won't be pouring money down the drain. If you want to get ahead of the game for Easter,
11:57Lidl have an early bird deal on Easter eggs. These Celebrations Smarties and Galaxy Minstrel
12:03eggs are down from 3.45 to 2.45 each for Lidl Plus members. The offer ends this time next week,
12:09the 26th of March, so don't let this one pass you by if you want to save. And finally, at Tesco,
12:15another household staple this week, squash. One litre bottles of Robinson's No Added Sugar Squash
12:23are down from 2 pounds each to 2 for 2.50 with Club Card membership. Cheers. Now, over to Georgie,
12:30who's got some smart products that make it surprisingly easy to grow your own fruit and
12:34veg now that the weather is less wintry. Spring is here, and it can be a great time to try a few
12:44simple ways to grow your own fruit and veg. If you shop smart for the right stuff, you won't
12:49need green fingers, a greenhouse, or even a garden. And some of these could make good Mother's Day gifts.
12:59Strawberries and raspberries are the taste of summer, but can easily cost 10 or 15 pounds per
13:04kilo when you buy them from the supermarket. However, the plants themselves are actually
13:10pretty easy to grow, and can give you a surprisingly bountiful supply of tasty fruit.
13:17So all you need is a container. This is actually a strawberry planter bag. For £10, you can get
13:24two of them. And I picked up this pack of five strawberry plants for £12.99 from B&Q. So you
13:32need a spot that gets plenty of sun. And they need lots of water, but they don't like sitting
13:38in puddles. So make sure whatever container you're using can drain properly. So this lot,
13:44even though they're currently rather small, can produce around five kilos of fruit each year. And
13:50they'll keep going strong for at least four or five years. So you'll be enjoying fruit for years to come.
13:57Raspberries are just as easy to grow, but need a shady spot and a slightly larger container. So you
14:04can get three canes like this for £9.99. Each one needs a pot that's at least 40 centimetres wide,
14:11because once they get going, they get big, which is a great thing when it comes to the amount of
14:16fruit you get. So from one cane like this, you can get up to three kilos of raspberries
14:21every summer. And with the right care, these should keep on giving every year.
14:29Things like potatoes, carrots and tomatoes are fun and cost effective to grow yourself.
14:34So a smart way to grow your own tomatoes is with a grow bag. They're brilliant because they don't
14:40need a pot. Tomato seeds cost as little as £2.50. And depending on what variety you picked,
14:48each plant will get you about 100 cherry tomatoes or 20 full-sized tomatoes.
14:56There are plenty of smart buys to help kids grow their own without spending too much. And
15:01you never know, they might be more inclined to eat their veg if they've helped grow it.
15:07This starter set costs £18.95 and includes two bamboo plant pots, five packets of vegetable
15:14seeds, some dried compost discs and, how cute are these, some wooden handle tools. Or you could go
15:22with more of a herb theme. There are lots available that let you grow your own tasty herb garden right
15:28on the kitchen windowsill. And once they're confident, for £7, the kids can even grow their
15:35own strawberries with a kit like this from Kew Gardens online shop. At this rate, I'm going to
15:40be making jam this summer. Finally, a little tip. Some of the food we throw away can be encouraged
15:49to grow into something new. Now it's not guaranteed, but you know what? It's worth a try
15:55because who doesn't love free food from what would be waste? So spring onions are a really good one
16:02to try. Celery is also just as easy. All you need to do is chop off the end bit, about three centimetres
16:09from the root. Place these in a small glass of water. Put that glass on a windowsill that sees
16:15plenty of sun and the bits that grow are ready to eat. Or when the roots get to about an inch long,
16:21put your new plant in a pot and place outside where it will grow. So from your own supply of
16:28expensive fruit to maybe helping the kids eat their veg, you don't have to break the bank to grow your own.
16:35Georgie, thank you very much and thank you also for sending these into us. Look what the celery's doing!
16:42The celery's growing and the spring onions, they're ready to go for the stir fry tonight, which you're
16:47making me later. Oh right, okay then. Now it's time for that section of the show where we look at
16:54what doohickey has been driving people crazy. Our social media feeds are inundated with apparently
17:02brilliant products at tempting prices, but are they really worth the hype and the money?
17:08This time we're looking at a mini waffle maker that's been causing a stir on socials.
17:13Waffles, waffles, we want waffles. Yeah it's these, look, the waffle maker. They're mini waffle makers.
17:20Mini waffle makers. Mini waffle makers. So people are waffling all sorts. Mini waffle makers
17:27first went viral in America with an account called Will It Waffle? racking up millions of views
17:33and experimental chefs making all sorts, even pizzas in them. I saw someone online make a pizza
17:39waffle like this and I figured that was a no-brainer for me to try. They promise fun and
17:44creative cooking, but does this one for £13.50 deliver? Okay, you ready? You're really excited.
17:53How do we know when it's at temperature? Because the light goes off. When the light goes off you're
17:58going to pour in the batter mixture. Okay. Unlike pricier models, this one lacks any temperature
18:04control with a light that tells you when it's ready to cook. It's gone out. Okay, can we do one?
18:08All right, let's do it. Ready? Okay. Quick spray. Okay. Right and then this goes in. We've used a pre-mixed
18:14batter but you could of course make yours from scratch. It produces a classic round waffle
18:19with deep pockets. And then, shall I? Yes. Can you smell the sweeteners? Sweetness.
18:28Oh look! That's ready. Look at that, non-stick plates. Silicon tongs are recommended to keep the
18:34non-stick plates in good condition. That looks delicious. We need a tester. Kimmy, come on in.
18:43Now, what do you think of the waffle? It looks amazing and a really great size as well. It's not
18:49too big. Okay. Now, you get to choose what you'd like on it. If you're going to do it, I mean you've
18:53got to do it properly. Oh, would you look at that? Amazing. What a treat. Thank you very much. You're
19:02very welcome. Shall I eat it? Yeah, we have to watch you eat it. Okay. Mmm. Genuinely? Really good. Excellent.
19:10Genuinely really good. I think I might take this back to my desk. Thanks guys. Enjoy. Thank you very much.
19:16Thank you. You know what? It is a gamble, isn't it? You're taking a risk. If you see something
19:20online that appears to be popular, there isn't really a guarantee that it's going to work as
19:25well as it appears. I think we found something that does. Yeah. It really does. Yeah. We'll make
19:31you one now. Go on. Go on. Coming up, John is testing essential products for new mums and dads.
19:41Could a £200 buggy be better value than one costing £900?
19:46Well, I found that pretty straightforward, actually.
19:56Welcome back. If you're just joining us, you've missed some top deals to save you money this week.
20:01So make a note. Don't forget, 7pm Wednesdays. Put it in your diary so you don't miss out next time.
20:07Okay, so 7pm. You've done it. Okay. Oh, thank you. Right now though, our roving reporter,
20:12Jordan Cox, is on the high street for us. Yes, it's nearly Mother's Day and most people will be
20:18out buying flowers in the next couple of weeks. So I'm going to take all the legwork out of it
20:22for you. I'm going to scour the high street and find the best bundles I can for just a tenner.
20:27Kicking off with the Tesco Brightest Mum Bouquet. These are released on the 26th of March and
20:32guarantee five days of freshness. A very colourful bunch here, aptly named Brightly Beautiful from
20:37Sainsbury's. These are £10 in store from now and also guarantee five days of freshness.
20:43This is probably the biggest bunch in terms of size. It's from Asda. It's the Bumper Bunch,
20:47which is in store from right now and also, you guessed it, five days of freshness.
20:53I quite like the see-through cellophane wrapper on the Morrison's Bunch. This is called Fruit
20:57Salad. It's available in store from the 26th of March. Again, £10 and again, five days of
21:02freshness. Last but by no means least, I've got a treat for you with this one. It's Aldi's Pretty
21:07in Pink Bundle, which is on sale from the 27th of March, but it's not £10. It's £9.99. You're
21:14saving a penny with this one and it's not five days freshness. It's not six days, but it's seven
21:20days of guaranteed freshness. Jordan, thank you very much. Now, when it comes to Mother's Day,
21:29there are some traditional gifts that never go out of fashion. Cards, flowers, and chocolates,
21:36a classic mum gift. And guess what? The UK's most popular box of chocolates is-
21:41Milk Tray.
21:42I think you might be stuck in the 80s. Oh no, apparently it's true.
21:45Yes.
21:46So when you can pick them up cheapest, head to a comparison site like trolley.co.uk,
21:52which lets you compare the price of products in different shops. And not just chocolates,
21:57so any item on supermarket shelves you can search for using this website.
22:01That's a great idea.
22:03We spend an average of £67 per household on Mother's Day gifts, from chokies to smellies.
22:09Flowers are the top choice, but there are some smart ways to deliver it if you can't do so in
22:13person.
22:14Some online florists do cupakes for low prices, and they can be even less if you're not fussed
22:21about paying for a named day delivery, like this one from B&M.
22:25Oh, thank you. Oh, you shouldn't have.
22:30B&M's Mother's Blush Bouquet will set you back just £19.99 with free standard delivery,
22:36or an extra £5.95 for tracked named day delivery.
22:40Letterbox flowers are a great choice too. They come in a box small enough to post to
22:44your mum's door, and some give you more than just flowers for your money.
22:49Letterbuds give you a free online flower arranging course with your first order of
22:53letterbox flowers, so you can zhuzh up that bouquet with some expert techniques.
22:58These flying flowers bouquets come with free next day delivery,
23:02and they throw in a box of chocolates as well. Isn't that lovely?
23:07You just use the code FREECHOX.
23:10Or, to really keep costs down, you could consider faking it.
23:16This laser-cut Lumibop pop-up bouquet will last way longer than real flowers,
23:21saving you money too, as it's only £7.
23:24And they're recycled cardboard as well. You just pop the bottom,
23:28and you've got your little bouquet. Look at that!
23:32And it leads very nicely into another Mother's Day staple, cards.
23:38British mums opened nearly 30 million cards on Mother's Day,
23:42at an average price of £2.26 per card.
23:46Personalised cards can be even pricier, but take a look at The Card Factory.
23:51They're offering personalised Mother's Day cards from just £1.79.
23:55And if you get it done now, you can send it second class for just 85 pence.
24:00Or, if you're prone to leaving just a little bit too late, try this.
24:04E-cards via an app.
24:06Oh yes, these are brilliant.
24:08With CardSnacks, you can send personalised animated e-cards by text or email.
24:14So it's £3.49 a month, but you could do all your birthday cards,
24:19Father's Day, Mother's Day. All the cards you would ever need to send.
24:24If you want to send more than a card,
24:26there's a great way to send a treat to mum's door. Brownies in a box.
24:31Now, there are lots of brownie delivery services to choose from,
24:33but one of the best we've found are these from Coco Brownie Bakehouse.
24:39Their mixed brownie box is £13 for six decent-sized treats,
24:43and they're out for delivery in one to two days.
24:47Go on, you can have that one.
24:48Thank you. Oh my goodness.
24:49Oh, look at that. It's massive.
24:53If you're looking for something that will last longer than five minutes,
24:57how about this clever display frame?
25:00I love this. It's £14.99, and there you have it.
25:04Yep.
25:04An art frame.
25:05Yep.
25:05Oh, that's not all.
25:06There is so much more.
25:08There's so much more. You open it up and you can keep around, I think, 100 pieces of art.
25:14That's the first three months of primary school, basically.
25:17No, but it's so lovely.
25:19You can store all of the pictures at the back
25:21and easily swap out what you're displaying in the frame.
25:24So you just have to open the edges.
25:26Yep.
25:27Let's put it in the frame.
25:28And it's got magnetic closing.
25:31Or if you really want to push the boat out,
25:34how about a personalised hamper of gifts that can suit a variety of budgets?
25:39So here we've got Not Another Bunch of Flowers,
25:42which is a website that allows you to build a bespoke hamper
25:46for that special person in your life.
25:48So the first thing you do is you choose your box design.
25:50Let's go small box.
25:51Small box, yeah.
25:53You can build a gift or care package with a mix of yummy treats and indulgent or fun goodies.
25:59And the items range from £1.25 up to £65.
26:03So I would like some gluten-free biscuits, please.
26:07OK.
26:07Zero bubbles.
26:08Yep. This section, we've got pampering treats.
26:11I can feel that box is about to arrive.
26:14Oh, how did you do that?
26:16That's incredible. You've made me so happy.
26:19There's a really lovely range of gifts.
26:21There is. And you don't have to break the bank to keep someone happy.
26:26Now for brand new mums and mums-to-be, John is testing one of the essentials.
26:33While they're worth every penny, a new baby isn't cheap,
26:37especially when it comes to transporting them safely.
26:40This is where travel systems come in.
26:43They include a car seat, a pushchair and often a carry cot that all fit into the same frame.
26:53They're designed to help you seamlessly move between home,
26:56pushing a buggy and the car, but can cost around £1,000 or more.
27:02So is it worth paying top dollar or could a cheaper model offer better value?
27:07My premium choice is from Cybex with car seat, carry cot and pushchair for £899.95.
27:16My budget choice is from Babylo.
27:19This is also a car seat, carry cot and pushchair and meets the same safety regulations,
27:24but costs £600 less, £295.
27:29Sam Sardette is my expert helper for the day.
27:34As a busy mum of two and a fitness coach for new mums,
27:37she knows better than most what parents need from their buggies.
27:41Hello Sam, great to meet you.
27:43Nice to meet you, John.
27:44Now what do you look for in a travel system?
27:47Making sure that I can push it along so it's nice and sturdy,
27:50but also a good amount of storage so if we're going out and shopping,
27:54I can put stuff in the bottom as well.
27:57After loading three shopping bags, there's not much between the premium Cybex.
28:02That is actually really good.
28:04And budget Babylo when it comes to storage.
28:07It's not too bad, but it's more of a squeeze, isn't it?
28:09But how will they compare on the move?
28:14Well, they both seem to cope fairly well with the kerb,
28:17but I can't help noticing that the suspension's different.
28:19With the premium Cybex, you've got two sets of springs,
28:23one on the front axle, another one on the whole frame there.
28:27Yeah.
28:27Whereas with the budget, we've just got springs on the rear axle,
28:32just one set of springs.
28:34The last thing you need is your baby jiggling around, John.
28:37Especially when they're asleep, we need a smooth ride.
28:40Yeah.
28:40No waking up.
28:41Mine's actually really sturdy.
28:43Yours is very smooth.
28:45With the Babylo, the front wheels hit the potholes and there isn't any suspension.
28:52So the premium Cybex's extra suspension offers a smoother ride.
28:57How do they compare if the weather turns?
28:59I think today a big elemental threat could well be rain,
29:03and they both come with rain covers.
29:05Let's see how easy they are to put on.
29:09This one's actually fairly easy.
29:14Actually, this is pretty easy as well.
29:17The good thing about the Cybex one is it's got a window at the front,
29:21and that seems to roll up like that.
29:23Ah.
29:24And this is always handy if you need to, you know, see if the baby's okay,
29:29pop your hand in.
29:30Whereas with this one, if you need to get to the baby,
29:33you're going to have to be trying to shove your arm into there,
29:36and it's going to be more difficult.
29:40Walk over, it's time to transfer our very lifelike dolls to the car
29:44with the car seats of our travel systems.
29:47The Cybex has a swiveling chair.
29:50I find this rotating one so much easier.
29:53But the budget baby low without a rotating seat is easy enough too.
29:58Overall, I found that pretty straightforward, actually.
30:02Now to pack carry cot and buggy frame away.
30:05Let's dismantle the Cybex first.
30:08To get the carry cot off, though,
30:10press these buttons, and unless you've got quite long arms,
30:14I just feel like that's quite difficult to get off, really.
30:17And then the frame, well, that's actually really easy to put down.
30:23That goes straight into the boot like that, and then that like that.
30:28I think the frame was really easy to get down,
30:30but the carry cot to get off the frame was a bit difficult, a bit tricky.
30:33Yes, absolutely.
30:37Will the £600 cheaper baby low be trickier to pack away?
30:41Oh, that's a lot easier, isn't it?
30:42I can just put that off for the moment.
30:44Buttons here, and then I lift those up.
30:47That's fairly easy as well.
30:49That fits into the boot there, leaving plenty of room for this to fit in like that.
30:55That's pretty good, isn't it?
30:56The carry cot coming off of the frame seems a lot more easier than the Cybex.
31:01And it occupies less space in the boot.
31:03If I had to choose one that was easier to put down and take off, I would say the baby low.
31:09So the cheaper product is easier to pack away.
31:12Next, a test of moving car seat to buggy frame.
31:16One benefit of a travel system is being able to remove the whole car seat with baby in it
31:21and slot it into the buggy, hopefully smoothly, to avoid spoiling a nap.
31:26Easy.
31:27It is.
31:29The Cybex's frame needs adapters to take the car seat.
31:32Pretty easy to find yourself losing them, I imagine.
31:36While the budget baby low...
31:37There's a big red catch there.
31:40...doesn't need any.
31:41There we are.
31:42See, that is really good because it's the same clipping as the carry cot.
31:48Yes, for me, that's easier.
31:51The budget baby low is proving excellent.
31:54Before we wrap up, we're fast-forwarding a few months to when baby is old enough to sit up in the buggy.
32:00How do they compare now?
32:02In the case of the Cybex, you actually get a completely separate push chair unit
32:07that clicks in instead of the carry cot.
32:14It's actually really easy to get her in.
32:17So the seat adjusts.
32:18It seems to go all the way down, which if they want to have a little nap, they can.
32:22It goes up, sits upright.
32:24We've got a canopy, which seems to fold out as well, which I think is really handy.
32:30Yeah, it's quite versatile, isn't it?
32:32It does seem really versatile, actually.
32:34It's really sturdy, again, and seems to grow quite well with your child.
32:39Yes.
32:40Baby low takes a different approach.
32:41You transform the carry cot into a push chair.
32:48And that's a really easy way to just go from carry cot to push chair.
32:53The advantage of this is clearly that you don't have a separate thing to store,
32:58which takes up a lot of room.
32:59I actually really like this feature.
33:01The fact that you can just go straight from carry cot to push chair, no adapters needed.
33:08The Cybex has smoother suspension, a better rain cover and handy swiveling car seat.
33:14But the baby low has impressed all day.
33:17So which offers better value for money?
33:19I think even regardless of price, it's the baby low for me.
33:24It's easier.
33:25There's less parts.
33:26You don't need to have additional units.
33:29And it's something that I would actually buy myself.
33:33Well, I agree with you.
33:34The baby low is definitely better value for money.
33:38A triumph.
33:39Save £600 and get a better product overall.
33:45After the break, we help three paddle boarding pals find a new smartwatch.
33:50Perhaps the perfect prezzie for the sporty woman in your life.
33:55Sorry, I was trying to video.
33:59Welcome back to shop smart, save money.
34:08Mother's Day special.
34:09It's my favorite time of the show.
34:12Doppelganger time.
34:14So we take something that's really expensive.
34:16Yes.
34:16OK.
34:16And then we look at something that's terribly similar, but less money.
34:21This time, moisturizers.
34:22We've got one from Charlotte Tilbury.
34:24Yes.
34:25Charlotte's magic cream costs £45 for 30 mils and claims to make skin look smoother and firmer.
34:33And we've got one from Primark.
34:35Whose PS pro hydration cream claims to have a silky texture
34:40designed to be easily absorbed into the skin.
34:43It will set you back £6 for 45 mils.
34:46There's a similarity to how they look.
34:49But how will they compare on the skin?
34:51We need a tester.
34:52Simone, in you come, please, my lovely.
34:55Thank you for lending us your face.
34:56No problem.
34:57All right.
34:57So we're going to start with the Charlotte Tilbury.
35:00Is it going in easy?
35:01It feels like it's going in quite nicely.
35:03There is a glow.
35:04Now it's Primark's time to shine.
35:07It also has some sun protection.
35:09Does it feel lighter?
35:10It feels around the same.
35:11OK.
35:11It's slicker, I think.
35:13Put it on your cheek.
35:13That's how that goes in.
35:15Do you feel moisturized where you applied the cream?
35:17I do.
35:18But I think the feeling of the Charlotte Tilbury
35:20makes my skin feel a lot nicer.
35:22Perhaps it doesn't feel quite as nice as the Charlotte Tilbury.
35:25But at £6, this remarkably similar-looking Primark version
35:30might be worth a try.
35:31Simone, thank you very much.
35:32You're glowing now on both cheeks.
35:35Now it's that time of the show where you ask for our help.
35:39Yep.
35:39Three friends who love paddleboarding have been in touch.
35:42Let's see what we can do for them.
35:45Hi, guys.
35:45I'm Kaz.
35:46I'm Gail.
35:47I'm Sarah.
35:48And we're paddleboarding buddies here today
35:51to basically get some help for a sports watch.
35:54New place for paddle.
35:55What I'm looking for is a watch to attract my heart rate,
35:59my speed, and give me progression over the next few months.
36:03I'm looking for something that I can use for hiking,
36:05swimming, and paddleboarding, and that I can see
36:07without wearing my glasses.
36:10I'm after something really durable,
36:12be out on some adventures with me,
36:13and yeah, stand up to everything I throw at it.
36:17So we need something perfect for all of us.
36:19As for our budget for the watch,
36:21we agreed around £500 would be our price point.
36:24So that would be perfect for us.
36:25Anything that comes underneath.
36:27Bonus.
36:28Can you help us?
36:31We have found one tough and versatile product
36:34to suit all their needs.
36:36The Polar Pacer Pro.
36:38It has over 150 sport modes,
36:41plus assisted GPS for safety and peace of mind
36:45during their travels, hikes, and paddleboards.
36:48Plus it has an IPX7 waterproof rating
36:51and a Gorilla Glass screen,
36:53as clearly durability is important.
36:55And an added bonus.
36:57This watch comes in well under their budget at £182.99.
37:03Let's see how they got on with it.
37:06Interesting.
37:07Yeah.
37:09I don't think I've heard of this brand before.
37:13The big reveal.
37:14The big reveal.
37:15Oh, look.
37:16That is so smart.
37:18Much smaller than it looks on the box.
37:20Looks very adjustable in terms of size and fit.
37:23It's quite a long strap, isn't it?
37:24Yeah, it's a good size strap.
37:25It's got tiny little buttons on the side.
37:27And they're quite grippy as well.
37:29It's really light as well.
37:30Is it waterproof?
37:32It says underneath WR,
37:34which I presume is water resistant to 50 metres.
37:37That'd be great for paddling then.
37:39I'm not going 50 metres under,
37:40so that's brilliant.
37:41Well spotted.
37:42Yeah, so what is else in the box?
37:43What's this?
37:45It's an instruction manual.
37:46Which I really love.
37:48I don't want to always look online.
37:52In terms of setup,
37:53we first need to wake up our watches.
37:56The Pacer Pro pairs with a smartphone app called Polar Flow.
38:00In they go.
38:01Polar Flow.
38:02It's coming.
38:04Which lets you control and view its features on your phone
38:07and tailor the information it records to your sport.
38:10If we click on sport profiles...
38:12Oh, look at this.
38:13We have just found out that this app has got 150 sports,
38:18one of which is...
38:19Surprise, surprise.
38:21There it is.
38:22Stand-up paddleboarding.
38:23Not every app has that, is it?
38:25No.
38:26So we're so excited about this
38:28because suddenly we're being recognised.
38:30The wide choice of activities...
38:32Mind and body, stretching, lots of different dancing ones.
38:36...means the watch should give useful information on dry land too.
38:39We all like to crossfit and do all the things.
38:42So the fact we've got all those is great.
38:44It's just so multifunctional.
38:46The Pacer Pro promises better battery life
38:48than some other popular watches,
38:50which can conk out after a couple of days.
38:53Well, the bit I got really excited about
38:55was learning that it had five to seven days
38:57just standard battery life.
38:59Because we've both had watch failures.
39:02You get halfway through and you go,
39:03oh, the watch has died.
39:04And it's really annoying when you've put a good shift in
39:07and you can't shout about it, can you?
39:10That actually looks really cool.
39:12I don't know about you ladies.
39:13That's very clean.
39:17Before hitting the water,
39:19Kaz, Sarah and Jo wanted to see
39:20how the watch would work in everyday life.
39:23We are ready to go.
39:25Recording started.
39:28First thing that we're going to do is take it for a walk
39:30and just test it for all the regular things
39:32that you might do if you want to walk or hike.
39:35The Pacer Pro has sensors for GPS position,
39:38heart rate, steps and speed.
39:41So, what's your heart rate currently?
39:4267.
39:43And what's yours, Jo?
39:45It's 88.
39:4688?
39:47It's me.
39:47Oh, I'm on 76.
39:49Oh, I'm chilled.
39:50I have to say this watch is really intuitive.
39:52We're all striders, aren't we?
39:54And you see the heart rate there is tracking our steps.
39:57It's tracking our calories.
39:59Jo keeps disappearing because she's doing a litter pick.
40:06It's really easy to read as well, Jo,
40:08which is really important to us too as well.
40:10So far, so good on the walk.
40:12So, 90 calories.
40:13It's like I burnt off the cockroach soup.
40:17Brilliant.
40:20Ready to go on the water.
40:22Yeah, brilliant.
40:24The first test for our stand-up paddleboarding,
40:26we decided to paddle together and just do a lap of the lake.
40:30During workouts, key information is colour-coded
40:33so it's easy to read when you're out and about.
40:37I like the heart rate band.
40:38I really like that on mine.
40:41Yeah, the colour.
40:41I like it.
40:44We decided to put it through a bit of a speed test, didn't we?
40:47We're going to test the watch and see how it looks on the speed.
40:50Sarah and myself decided to give a bit of Billy Beans, didn't we?
40:54And kind of go for it.
40:56Go, go, go!
41:00Well, Jo was a little like, no, I'm not getting involved with this.
41:03I'm not competitive.
41:04If you're too busy to look at the watch,
41:06you can review speed data later on your phone.
41:15Sorry, I was on a video.
41:17For the final test, we decided to go in different directions across the lake.
41:21See you in five, ten minutes.
41:23Bye!
41:25And just see if the GPS was working.
41:29GPS was working.
41:31GPS tracking should let Kaz, Jo and Sarah work out how far they've paddled.
41:36I'm almost half okay.
41:38And record their favourite routes without taking their smartphones on the water.
41:44It could also be useful for walking, running or cycling.
41:51Should we go and check our apps and see what the data is?
41:54Yeah, definitely.
41:55Oh, that'd be great fun.
41:56When you've come back and you've synced your watch,
41:58you just get this shed load of data, don't you?
42:01My speed was 3.7 because I didn't get involved in the race.
42:05That's 8.1.
42:06You're 8.2.
42:08Here it is. This is what we wanted to see, isn't it?
42:10And that's mine, slightly different.
42:12We wanted to see where it was because that's proof that we've done it.
42:17And you've got here, this is...
42:19Different lap times.
42:20Oh, this is so clever.
42:24I've had a couple of watches,
42:27I've had a couple of watches that I've tried.
42:29One is an old one of my husband's.
42:31It's quite techy.
42:32It's a little bit difficult to use, not as intuitive as this.
42:35And the other one I had looked beautiful, but battery life was just zero.
42:40This compares very favourably with those.
42:42The watch was really comfortable, felt very light,
42:45didn't impact on my paddle stroke at all, which was great.
42:49Premium smartwatches can cost over £300.
42:53So, what do Kaz, Jo and Sarah think of the Pacer Pro's £182.99 price tag?
43:00Wow.
43:01That is very competitive.
43:04I'm very impressed with the functionality of that watch,
43:06and I think it's incredibly good value.
43:08That's amazing.
43:10That is really good.
43:13Oh, wow. They are brave.
43:15That looked absolutely freezing cold.
43:17Not me, Bob.
43:18Fortunately, the Polar Pacer Pro is as tough as they are.
43:23Tough, intuitive and great value.
43:26It's a winner.
43:27Yes. That's all for now, but do join us next week for more top products
