00:00Vino Rosso's full brother News Carver didn't make any headlines on the racetrack, but the
00:07team at New Vocations is hoping that one day he could become a star in the show ring.
00:11We talked to Anna Ford about their new arrival.
00:14It was about a month ago we got a call from Tanya Gunther who said that she had a really
00:20nice three-year-old she wanted to see if we could take into the New Vocations program.
00:25And at the time, she gave me his name, said his name is News Carver.
00:30And so we were really excited when we looked him up on Equibase to see that he was actually
00:35the full brother to Vino Rosso.
00:39He definitely, I would say, knows that he is of royal blood.
00:45He has a little bit of an attitude or a chip on his shoulder a little bit.
00:52He definitely came off the trailer just like you would expect.
00:55Very proud of himself, has that presence of a very quality horse.
01:01And he does look a lot like his brother, Vino Rosso.
01:05And he's got a buddy right now who just came into the program too and they're really learning
01:09how to relax and let down and just get some good R&R.
01:14So once he gets comfortable with that and we feel like he's really relaxed and physically
01:17and mentally just let down, then we'll bring him back into training probably over the winter.
01:25The Gunthers have been good supporters of our program.
01:29We feel really proud that they trust us to take good care of a horse like News Carver
01:34and make sure that he gets the best chance at a second career.
01:39We're moving into our 13th year of doing the New Vocations Breeders' Cup pledge.
01:44We ask owners and trainers of Breeders' Cup contenders to pledge a percentage of their
01:49earnings and this year's championships back to New Vocations.
01:52This year I'm really excited.
01:54We will break a million dollars total from all those 13 years.
01:58So far we've raised $950,000 and last year alone we raised $150,000.
02:05So this year we're excited to hit that million dollar mark and hopefully we just can go way over it.
02:12So with News Carver coming in at this time of the year, we were excited to be able to
02:17have him and maybe have him featured during this time because obviously his brother, Vino
02:22Rosso, won the Classic in 2019.
02:26But the really neat part of that story is that Vino Rosso's owners, both Mike Rapoli
02:31and St. Elias and Todd Pletcher, the trainer, pledged that year.
02:36And so in 2019 that was one of our record-breaking years for the pledge that we raised
02:41over that $150,000 mark and really just launched the pledge into a new level.
02:48And so it's really neat to be three years later sitting here with Vino Rosso's brother
02:54in the program and then heading into, you know, the Breeders' Cup season and trying
02:59to promote, you know, the pledge and get people to join in.
03:03So this year is a very special year as well because it's our 30th year anniversary for
03:07New Vocations and we've basically been celebrating all year and we're really hoping that we can
03:14round out the year with the Breeders' Cup pledge being our largest one to date.
03:19It would really mean a lot.
