00:00:00Tonight, the sensational trial that just finished.
00:00:03Why would a beloved family man suddenly disappear
00:00:05on his family and friends?
00:00:07And then tell them not to come looking for him.
00:00:09The stunning courtroom confession
00:00:11on an all new 2020 beginning right now.
00:00:19I'm living in the twilight zone
00:00:20and I can hear the theme song going on.
00:00:23Do, do, do, do, do, do.
00:00:26He opened the door and he was covered in blood.
00:00:29He was here one moment, gone the next.
00:00:31There's no goodbye, there's no I'll talk to you later,
00:00:34there's no nothing.
00:00:36He was gone.
00:00:37They're getting these weird messages.
00:00:39Roses are red, violets are blue,
00:00:42my wife is a whore, your husband is too.
00:00:45My family and I are begging you,
00:00:47asking for your assistance.
00:00:49Nothing added up, nothing made sense.
00:00:53Had she ever mentioned anything
00:00:54about Mike, concerns about Mike?
00:00:56She's sobbing.
00:00:57She's just, I know he's coming around,
00:00:59there's stuff, you know, doors that were closed or open.
00:01:02Rory told her that Mike got picked up
00:01:04in a black SUV one day, never came back.
00:01:07And I started putting those pieces together.
00:01:12It made it alarming, it gave me chills.
00:01:15Everything that had been happening
00:01:17for the last two and a half years was likely a lie.
00:01:20There was just more and more twists and turns.
00:01:23You know, they ask,
00:01:24when was the last time you seen him?
00:01:27Frankly, I said, years.
00:01:29What?
00:01:46This is Claremont, Florida,
00:01:49a rural community about 20 miles west of Orlando,
00:01:52but a world apart from the tourist-filled amusement parks.
00:01:56Michael and Lori Shaver were raising their two children here
00:02:00when his lifelong friend, Scott Amatuccio,
00:02:02started to get worried.
00:02:04We were best friends.
00:02:06We were just always around each other.
00:02:09I could tell something was off.
00:02:11I just haven't heard from Mike for a while.
00:02:15I had texted him at some point in time,
00:02:17he never responded.
00:02:19And then I'm like, what's going on with Mike's Facebook?
00:02:22I go to his page and he wasn't even my friend anymore.
00:02:30For friends so close,
00:02:31an unexplained social media slight like this
00:02:34was too strange to ignore.
00:02:36And it turns out Scott wasn't the only one worried.
00:02:41I would get strange messages.
00:02:43We were just questioning it.
00:02:44Like, is he having that many troubles
00:02:46that he has to turn away from his family?
00:02:49The communication went down and it seemed to be,
00:02:51it was just a text or a social media Facebook message.
00:02:54We had conversations all the time about, where's Mike?
00:02:57Have you seen Mike?
00:02:58Have you heard from Mike?
00:02:59Someone said Michael just took off in a black SUV
00:03:02and never came back.
00:03:03None of this adds up.
00:03:04Clearly something wasn't right.
00:03:07Michael was missing.
00:03:08He was here one moment, gone the next.
00:03:10Just gone.
00:03:11Everybody's hair was raised and what's going on?
00:03:15It was that concern that started the unraveling
00:03:18of a years-long mystery as deep and dark
00:03:22as the lakes that surround this place.
00:03:34Hi, I'm Michael Schafer.
00:03:36Oh, there I am.
00:03:38That's me, let me see.
00:03:40Michael grew up the third child of four
00:03:42with his brother and two sisters
00:03:44in the tiny rural village of Lawrence in upstate New York.
00:03:48Our relationship was a very special bond.
00:03:51My mom was a single mother, so I would help my mom out
00:03:55whenever she needed help with Michael.
00:03:58I would always put Michael first.
00:04:03This is a photo of Mike and I.
00:04:04We're at my house that I grew up in.
00:04:07We would just have fun as kids.
00:04:10Ride our bikes all day long and go on adventures,
00:04:13always playing around the neighborhood.
00:04:16I built it, although I never finished building it.
00:04:20He was great at playing drums.
00:04:22Eventually, he learned to play guitar.
00:04:25We used to have this band.
00:04:27We called it Rifles and Dandelions.
00:04:29Instead of Guns and Roses, that was our silly way
00:04:32of coming up with a band.
00:04:33As a young man, Michael showed a talent
00:04:35for working with his hands.
00:04:37I played with tools all my life.
00:04:40I believe that the genes were passed on to Michael
00:04:42because as a kid, he used to repair stuff around the house.
00:04:47He would go around the town
00:04:50and people would actually give him stuff.
00:04:53He would fix it.
00:04:54He might take an old bicycle or something
00:04:57and fix it up and make it work again for somebody.
00:05:00It's like a sense of accomplishment saying, I fixed that.
00:05:04One time, him and his friend built an airplane
00:05:08out of wood in the backyard.
00:05:11And I swear, if they'd had a motor,
00:05:13they would have taken off with it.
00:05:16It was really something.
00:05:17You should have seen it.
00:05:20Michael's love of tinkering with things,
00:05:23I believe led him to wanting to work on airplanes.
00:05:28And then as he got a little older,
00:05:30he wanted to learn how to fly.
00:05:32Flying wasn't the only thing Michael loved.
00:05:34By the time he'd gotten to high school,
00:05:36his head was also in the clouds
00:05:39for Lori Paddleford, seen here in their yearbook.
00:05:43We all grew up together.
00:05:44It was around seventh or eighth grade.
00:05:46Mike had a crush on Lori.
00:05:49He wanted to figure out the best way to ask her out.
00:05:53We had come up with this great idea
00:05:55of playing boys to men in the background.
00:05:58Yes!
00:06:01I'll make love to you.
00:06:04So that's how they ended up dating.
00:06:07I don't think I really understood how serious it was
00:06:10until after they graduated.
00:06:12Then they were talking about marriage.
00:06:15This is a picture of Mike and I at his wedding.
00:06:18I was his best man, and this was us together.
00:06:24Their wedding was beautiful.
00:06:26Lori, she was so happy.
00:06:30I remember Michael couldn't stop smiling.
00:06:33He eventually got his commercial pilot license,
00:06:36worked for Piedmont.
00:06:39He loved it, and he used to take his friends up
00:06:44and do loop-de-loops with them, and they loved it.
00:06:49Soon, Michael and Lori became parents
00:06:52to daughter Isabel and her younger brother, Aiden.
00:06:55After moving up and down the East Coast,
00:06:58Michael and his family ended up in the Sunshine State.
00:07:01When I moved down to Florida,
00:07:02that's when they moved down to Florida.
00:07:04They moved to Claremont, bought a property, five acres.
00:07:08It's pretty rural.
00:07:09It's beautiful lakes, some rolling hills.
00:07:12It's pretty quiet.
00:07:13They had chickens and guineas and turkeys
00:07:16and quite a few ducks,
00:07:17and he wanted them to have their own duck pond.
00:07:23In his off hours, he worked as a mechanic
00:07:25for Precious Metal, a local flight team.
00:07:28We were both volunteers
00:07:29for the Precious Metal Air Racing Team.
00:07:32Reno Air Racing has been compared to NASCAR of the sky.
00:07:38It's multiple planes on a closed course at one time.
00:07:41Speeds are up to 500 miles per hour.
00:07:44You're 50 feet off the ground.
00:07:45It's a huge adrenaline rush.
00:07:47We spent several years, several long nights,
00:07:49sometimes three days in a row,
00:07:50working on the plane together.
00:07:52It's a lot of fun.
00:07:53It's a lot of fun.
00:07:53It's a lot of fun.
00:07:54It's a lot of fun.
00:07:55It's a lot of fun.
00:07:56We spent almost three days in a row
00:07:57working on the plane together.
00:07:59The people who described him as a genius,
00:08:00I would agree.
00:08:01He just took care of it.
00:08:03He knew that the job was gonna be completed as it should.
00:08:07Lori worked from home for an insurance company
00:08:10while Michael was away for days at a time
00:08:12working as a pilot.
00:08:13Wanting to be with his family more,
00:08:15Michael quit the airline business for another dream job,
00:08:19this one at the most magical place on earth.
00:08:22Mike and I worked at Epcot together.
00:08:25He was a mechanic.
00:08:26Working at Disney was just his little kid inside,
00:08:30and he loved that job.
00:08:31He was flourishing.
00:08:35But then, for some reason,
00:08:37dependable Michael just stopped showing up.
00:08:40He was here one moment, gone the next.
00:08:42No goodbyes, no nothing.
00:08:45It seemed Michael Shaver was blowing off his friends,
00:08:48his family, even his job.
00:08:50When the manager contacted Mike,
00:08:52Mike's response was, you can go ahead and fire me,
00:08:55I'm not coming back.
00:08:56But if Michael Shaver wasn't coming back,
00:08:59where exactly was he going?
00:09:02In the fall of 2015,
00:09:04Michael Shaver, father of two,
00:09:06a mechanic who loved to work on and fly planes,
00:09:09seems to just fall off the grid.
00:09:12He was here one moment, gone the next.
00:09:15No goodbyes, no nothing.
00:09:16It seemed Michael Shaver was blowing off his friends,
00:09:19his family, even his job.
00:09:21When the manager contacted Mike,
00:09:23Mike's response was, you can go ahead and fire me,
00:09:26I'm not coming back.
00:09:27But if Michael Shaver wasn't coming back,
00:09:29he seems to just fall off the grid.
00:09:31He was here one moment, gone the next.
00:09:33There's no goodbye, there's no I'll talk to you later,
00:09:36there's no nothing, he was gone.
00:09:39It was a disappearance that just didn't make sense
00:09:41to Michael's friends.
00:09:43Who wondered, after nearly a decade marriage,
00:09:45could this have something to do
00:09:47with his rocky relationship with his wife, Lori?
00:09:50I'm Wilma Nicholas,
00:09:52and I was the neighbor for Lori and Mike Shaver.
00:09:56Mike was about the same age as my oldest son,
00:10:00so he was kind of like another son to me.
00:10:03My home was probably 50 feet away from their home,
00:10:07no trees in the middle.
00:10:09I would be just outside doing my chores,
00:10:12and I could hear the arguments happening inside.
00:10:15I talked to Lori, I just said, you guys okay?
00:10:17You know, I hear you fighting sometimes.
00:10:20Lori acted like everything was fine.
00:10:22She was all smiles, and he was all smiles,
00:10:24and they covered it up pretty good.
00:10:26I had no idea the extent of what was going on.
00:10:29I guess that's typical.
00:10:32Nobody knows what's really going on inside the house.
00:10:40On a hot, late summer afternoon,
00:10:42the simmering tension inside the house erupts.
00:10:46911, do you need police, fire, or the ambulance service?
00:10:50No, please, I'm on my way to the sheriff's office right now,
00:10:54I got my kids in a lot.
00:10:56What's going on?
00:10:58It was a domestic violence review.
00:11:01My hand is bleeding.
00:11:02I had just gotten home from work,
00:11:04and my phone rang, and it was Mike.
00:11:06And he said, can you come over, I need your help.
00:11:09He opened the door, and he was covered in blood,
00:11:13blood streaming down his face.
00:11:16There was torn clothes.
00:11:18I took a whole lot of photos,
00:11:20just in case he needed it at any point in the future.
00:11:25There was a domestic abuse incident in September of 2014
00:11:29at Michael and Lori's house.
00:11:30We are dealing with a scenario where we have
00:11:35the allegations made by Lori Shaver.
00:11:37Lori tells the 911 operator she and Michael
00:11:40have been fighting a lot lately,
00:11:41but it never got physical until that night.
00:11:45I grabbed my gun, because he had a gun in his hand,
00:11:47and I grabbed my kids and left.
00:11:49He pulled out a gun on you?
00:11:51Oh, yeah.
00:11:52He grabbed my car keys and put them in his pocket.
00:11:54I fought him to get my keys out of his pocket,
00:11:57and then I grabbed my kids.
00:11:58Mike's version of events was, she
00:12:01was the one that grabbed the gun.
00:12:02She was the one that was initiating the violence.
00:12:05He was trying to calm the situation down.
00:12:08He said that they had been in a fight,
00:12:12and Lori had threatened to kill him and herself,
00:12:17and that they had wrestled with the gun.
00:12:31Michael admits he kept the car keys from Lori
00:12:34to prevent her from leaving, but he
00:12:36says that's because he didn't want his wife driving
00:12:39with the kids after she'd been drinking.
00:12:42Both say, during the struggle, Lori hit Michael
00:12:44on the head with her revolver.
00:12:47The revolver that was on the bed looked like a .38,
00:12:50and it had pink plastic grips.
00:12:53Then I noticed there were roses all over the floor.
00:12:57She didn't go up to Michael Shaver
00:12:58and just wail on Michael Shaver.
00:13:00He had a handgun he pulled on her,
00:13:03and I believe she tried to deflect the gun,
00:13:07and it hit him.
00:13:08Police are unable to determine who
00:13:10started the physical altercation with the pistol.
00:13:14Ultimately, Michael was arrested for not anything
00:13:19dealing with the firearms, but he admitted I grabbed her,
00:13:22and law enforcement arrested him for battery.
00:13:26The battery charges ultimately dropped,
00:13:28but things are never the same between the childhood
00:13:31sweethearts.
00:13:32Both Michael and Lori dug in and pointed fingers at each other.
00:13:36Lori had been the victim of years of physical abuse
00:13:40by Michael Shaver.
00:13:42These acts were extreme.
00:13:45Lori was locked in a closet.
00:13:48Lori would be physically beaten.
00:13:51I never heard Mike scream at Lori or do anything physically.
00:13:58Lori, trying to paint Mike into this mockery of Michael,
00:14:03Lori, trying to paint Mike into this monster
00:14:07and the abusive person in the relationship.
00:14:09Everybody that knew Mike knew that wasn't the case.
00:14:13I do think Lori was abusive towards my brother
00:14:16and controlling.
00:14:17She would only let him talk for 20 minutes on the phone to me.
00:14:20His friends would say that he'd come around and have bruises,
00:14:23and they'd ask him what was the matter, what happened.
00:14:26Oh, Lori got mad.
00:14:28Michael Shaver was not some innocent victim
00:14:31that buried some violent woman.
00:14:33Michael Shaver was an aggressive guy,
00:14:36and she was always the victim of this aggression.
00:14:45In the fall of 2014, a judge grants a no-contact order
00:14:49against Michael, and he's forced to move out of the house
00:14:52he shared with Lori and his kids.
00:14:54Mike was staying in the airplane hangar
00:14:56where the precious metals plane was.
00:14:59I just figured it was for a day or two,
00:15:01and then later on, I learned that he'd been down there
00:15:03for a week or even more.
00:15:05He was sleeping, living, basically, at the hangar.
00:15:09There was a meeting room with some nice,
00:15:11big, comfortable couches.
00:15:13There was a shower there and a bathroom.
00:15:15She would kick him out.
00:15:16He would leave.
00:15:17A month or two would go by, and then she
00:15:19would have him come back again.
00:15:20Michael's friends say that while he was living out of the house,
00:15:24he still keeps tabs on Lori, suspecting
00:15:27she's seeing other men.
00:15:29When they would split up and Mike would be gone,
00:15:31there would be men that would come over quite often
00:15:34to the house.
00:15:35Michael believed that Lori cheated on him
00:15:37quite frequently.
00:15:39Lori always denied that she was cheating on Michael.
00:15:42He would say, what do you think?
00:15:44Does it sound like she's cheating,
00:15:45or am I just losing my mind?
00:15:47There was a time where I think Mike just needed to know
00:15:51what was going on at home.
00:15:54He and a friend would fly over Mike's house
00:15:56just to see whose truck was in the driveway,
00:15:59maybe just to make sure nobody was there.
00:16:02He was willing to overlook that and get past it,
00:16:04but it showed the love that he had of willing to fix
00:16:07stuff to be with his family.
00:16:10He loved her so much, I guess he forgave her.
00:16:15Michael's repeated attempts to save his marriage
00:16:18began to strain his other relationships.
00:16:21I tried to go visit Michael and his children in Florida,
00:16:26and always at last minute I would get a message saying
00:16:31that Lori said it was a bad time,
00:16:33that we shouldn't come down.
00:16:35But soon the communication from Michael
00:16:37went from infrequent to almost nonexistent.
00:16:41He seemed to simply vanish.
00:16:43He was there at the tractor show,
00:16:44and then the next week he was gone,
00:16:46and there was nothing in between, it was just gone.
00:16:49And when Frank checks in with Lori,
00:16:51her answer only deepens the mystery.
00:16:54According to Lori, Michael blew out of town
00:16:57and didn't want to be part of the family anymore.
00:16:58Gone without a trace, or was he?
00:17:12Michael and Lori had a rollercoaster relationship,
00:17:15but in the fall of 2015, things seemed to be going well.
00:17:20So well that Michael has moved back in
00:17:23with Lori and the kids.
00:17:25I know that he went home,
00:17:26and that they were trying to work things out.
00:17:30He had quite a few ducks,
00:17:32and they were staying with the chickens in the chicken coop,
00:17:35and he wanted them to have their own duck pond.
00:17:37He was digging out a duck pond in the back for her ducks,
00:17:41because she wanted to raise ducks and chickens.
00:17:43So he was home, they were back together again.
00:17:46But then things take another turn.
00:17:50November 7th, 2015, it's a day Frank Merritt
00:17:53says he will never forget.
00:17:55He and his family met Michael and Lori Shaver
00:17:57and their children at a local tractor show.
00:18:00Oh, it was really hot that day.
00:18:06They do a show three or four times a year
00:18:08during the winter months.
00:18:10It's just a bunch of antique tractors,
00:18:12and it's like a flea market.
00:18:14Mike was really into that stuff.
00:18:15He really liked that old stuff.
00:18:18But Michael's friend and coworker, Frank,
00:18:20says he could once again sense an unspoken tension
00:18:24between Michael and Lori.
00:18:26She just wouldn't make eye contact with us.
00:18:27She wouldn't speak with us.
00:18:29And it was kind of weird, because she was usually
00:18:32more bubbly than that.
00:18:33And then he says, hey, I got to go.
00:18:36So they left.
00:18:40The next time Frank hears from Michael
00:18:42is by text two days later.
00:18:45He had texted me on Monday that he
00:18:48was going to have to quit his job to save his marriage.
00:18:51So I just kind of backed out of it.
00:18:54I just left him alone.
00:18:55So when he didn't show up Tuesday,
00:18:56I didn't think nothing of it.
00:18:57It's just, well, he's got some problems.
00:19:00They'll work it out.
00:19:02And then Wednesday, he didn't come.
00:19:04And Thursday, he didn't come.
00:19:06And it wasn't until Thursday night
00:19:08that our manager came to see us.
00:19:11After three days of no showing at work,
00:19:14Michael's manager reaches out to him
00:19:16and gets a surprising response back.
00:19:19Mike's response was, you can go ahead and fire me.
00:19:21I'm not coming back.
00:19:23So just none of it made sense at all
00:19:25that Michael had sent a text message to his boss
00:19:28just up and quitting.
00:19:30He was known to be a very dependable worker
00:19:32and a diligent worker.
00:19:34That didn't add up at all.
00:19:36Well, if he's not showing up and not calling,
00:19:38I'll go by and check on him.
00:19:40But when Frank goes to Michael's house looking for answers,
00:19:43he only ends up with more questions.
00:19:46Lori answers the door.
00:19:47I ask where Mike is at.
00:19:49And she said, he's not home.
00:19:50And I said, well, what do you mean he ain't here?
00:19:53And I said, well, his car's here.
00:19:55And his car was in the driveway.
00:19:57So she said, he's not here.
00:20:00Frank says Lori eventually told him
00:20:02that after a heated argument, Michael stormed off,
00:20:05catching a ride with his friend Robert to Georgia.
00:20:08And she hadn't seen him since.
00:20:10Mike never told me he wanted to go to Georgia.
00:20:12He had never spoken about wanting to leave,
00:20:16leave the state, leave the marriage, any of that.
00:20:19I thought he was happy here.
00:20:21And we were doing so well.
00:20:23And then I said, hon, what an idiot.
00:20:27I felt like that was the wrong thing to do.
00:20:29You know, let's just walk away.
00:20:32I reached out to Lori through Messenger on Facebook.
00:20:35And I said, do you know where Michael is?
00:20:38And she said, no, he left.
00:20:43He left the kids.
00:20:43He's not paying child support.
00:20:45This strikes Michael's sister Stacey
00:20:48as completely out of character for the brother she knows.
00:20:51His kids meant more than anything in the world to him.
00:20:54And he would not just up and leave his children.
00:20:59And when I was texting with him, he says, I'm never coming back.
00:21:02I just wasn't answering his phone, never coming back.
00:21:05I knew they were having some marital problems.
00:21:07So I felt like he needed some space.
00:21:10He doesn't want to be involved with this craziness.
00:21:15Could Michael have finally had enough of his rocky marriage
00:21:18and decided to ditch it all, his job included,
00:21:22and head north to start over?
00:21:25It was his dream job.
00:21:26He would never quit.
00:21:27Nothing added up.
00:21:29Nothing made sense.
00:21:32What was strange and unusual about the messages
00:21:35that Mike was sending to his friends and family?
00:21:38The common theme of all of them would have been,
00:21:42leave me alone.
00:21:44I don't want to have anything to do with you.
00:21:46Just leave me alone.
00:21:46I don't have family.
00:21:48He didn't want to be found.
00:21:50He wanted to be left alone.
00:21:51He was not coming back.
00:21:54He had abandoned his family, and he was gone.
00:21:57These text messages were completely
00:21:59out of character for Michael.
00:22:00I think that the family really noticed that very quickly.
00:22:05Michael's niece Desiree Ruggles got this text from him,
00:22:08flat out saying, I don't have a family.
00:22:12Is there a reason why he's pulling away from our family?
00:22:14Because he doesn't talk to us anymore.
00:22:16Does he just need time?
00:22:18And I got a little angry.
00:22:19And I'm just like, you know what?
00:22:21If you don't want to be a brother, don't be a brother.
00:22:26Just when it seems he's gone for good
00:22:28and his wife Lori is moving on.
00:22:31Lori met Jeremy at a park, and their children
00:22:34began to play together.
00:22:35Michael Shaver seems to show back up.
00:22:38Had she ever mentioned any concerns about Mike?
00:22:40Yes.
00:22:41She goes, I know he's coming around.
00:22:43I know he's harassing me.
00:22:44There's doors that were closed or open.
00:22:46And I'm like, you need to get a restraining order.
00:22:59Michael Shaver seems to be abandoning his life.
00:23:03He hasn't shown up to work.
00:23:04And when friends and family reach out to him,
00:23:06they get messages saying, just leave me alone.
00:23:10According to Lori, Michael blew out of town,
00:23:12didn't want to be part of the family anymore, left the state.
00:23:16Over time, with no sign of Michael,
00:23:18Lori moves on with her life, meeting a new man, Jeremy
00:23:23Townsend, or Jay, as he's often called.
00:23:27He's in the military or was in the military.
00:23:29They ended up exchanging numbers,
00:23:32and a relationship developed.
00:23:35Lori's fresh start also includes getting fit.
00:23:38She starts working with a personal trainer
00:23:40named Rebecca Filmer.
00:23:42That a girl?
00:23:43Way to work.
00:23:44Way to work.
00:23:48How did you meet Lori?
00:23:50So I originally met her at Gold's Gym.
00:23:53I met her through her then boyfriend, Jay Townsend.
00:23:57He introduced us as his girlfriend at the time.
00:24:00She had just gotten married.
00:24:01And I was like, I want to meet her.
00:24:03His girlfriend at the time, she had just lost a lot of weight.
00:24:06And she wanted to start working out.
00:24:10Lori was super sweet.
00:24:11She was just someone that was very easy to talk to.
00:24:15She liked going out to dance and stuff.
00:24:17So we just kind of connected.
00:24:20Now you end up becoming roommates.
00:24:22You moved in, in this neighborhood with her.
00:24:25Yes, we became friends pretty close.
00:24:27So close that Lori confides in her about relationships
00:24:31with men, including what Lori says was a difficult marriage
00:24:35to Michael Shaver.
00:24:36She told me she was in this relationship
00:24:38that he made her feel bad about herself.
00:24:42And I started to understand why she
00:24:44wanted to lose so much weight, why she was
00:24:45so focused on her appearance.
00:24:47I mean, in session, she'd be in the mirror fixing her hair
00:24:50and making sure everything was just so.
00:24:55And even though it seemed Michael
00:24:56had initially skipped town, Rebecca
00:24:59says Lori told her that she started
00:25:00to sense that he was back.
00:25:03There was a time we're sitting in the living room
00:25:05and she's sobbing.
00:25:07She's just, I know he's coming around.
00:25:09There's stuff, you know, doors that were closed or open.
00:25:12And I'm like, you need to get a restraining order, you know,
00:25:16if it's getting that bad.
00:25:18She said, no, I don't want to be bothered.
00:25:20It's just going to kind of open up a whole other can of worms.
00:25:23Rebecca says Lori told her that she was divorcing Michael
00:25:26once and for all and moving on with her life.
00:25:30And she goes, oh, I had the quarter parents
00:25:32for her to settle their divorce.
00:25:34I'm like, oh, OK, you know, how did that go?
00:25:36She said it was settled.
00:25:38She's officially divorced.
00:25:39And I was like, perfect.
00:25:41But Lori's new relationship is far from perfect.
00:25:45She knows that man she has been seeing, Jeremy Townsend,
00:25:49is already married.
00:25:51Jeremy's wife didn't know about Lori.
00:25:54And Jeremy doesn't seem to be leaving his wife anytime soon,
00:25:58something that texts between the two show
00:26:00was creating a strain on their relationship.
00:26:05In April 2016, Jeremy's wife, Vanessa, gets a surprise.
00:26:09She's at work one day when she receives a flower delivery,
00:26:13but it's not from Jeremy.
00:26:14The delivery comes with a strange card.
00:26:17Roses are red, violets are blue.
00:26:20My wife is a whore.
00:26:21Your husband is too.
00:26:23Sorry about this.
00:26:25Check your Facebook message.
00:26:26We need to talk.
00:26:27Mike.
00:26:29Then Jeremy's wife goes onto Facebook
00:26:32and finds a message from Michael Shaver
00:26:34informing her of the affair.
00:26:36He says he's installed a spy app on Lori's cell phone,
00:26:40and he includes screenshots of texts and explicit photos
00:26:44between Jeremy and Lori.
00:26:46Basically, Mike was outing this affair.
00:26:49Lori's relationship with Jeremy implodes
00:26:52after his wife finds out.
00:26:54It was clear that he wasn't going to be leaving his wife.
00:26:58They were gonna work it out,
00:27:00and him and Lori were over.
00:27:05Lori moves on from Jeremy pretty quickly to another guy,
00:27:09Travis.
00:27:11Travis Filmer was a youth leader at a local church.
00:27:15Lori met him through Rebecca.
00:27:17I didn't know anything about her,
00:27:19but from appearances, she was really put together.
00:27:21I knew that she had kids.
00:27:24I saw how she interacted with the kids.
00:27:26So for me, that was a very important thing.
00:27:29I've always wanted kids.
00:27:30I've always wanted a family.
00:27:31I know when I was a kid and my parents got divorced,
00:27:34it destroyed me.
00:27:36The sparks between Travis and Lori first flying
00:27:39during a bonfire get-together at Lori's house.
00:27:43Her smile is the one thing that just stood out to me.
00:27:47It drew me to her.
00:27:49After that night, it was Travis this, Travis that,
00:27:52and I'm like, oh my God, here we go.
00:27:56I think she has a type.
00:27:57When I've seen pictures of Mike
00:27:59and the way that he would dress,
00:28:01it was similar to Travis.
00:28:05We ended up going out to dinner.
00:28:07We just hit it off.
00:28:08We had a lot in common,
00:28:10and decided to keep seeing each other.
00:28:13Lori also told Travis details
00:28:16about her relationship with Michael.
00:28:18From the things that she described to me,
00:28:20it was a very bad situation.
00:28:22She had told me that they were divorced,
00:28:25and I did ask if she was receiving any child support,
00:28:29and she told me that she wasn't,
00:28:31that he didn't want anything to do with the kids.
00:28:34I'm Kendall Windsor.
00:28:35I'm Travis Filmer's mother.
00:28:37Lori was lovely.
00:28:39It was like he was with us one day,
00:28:41and then the next thing you know,
00:28:42he's living with Lori.
00:28:45This is the person I want to be with.
00:28:47Not only did I fall in love with Lori,
00:28:49but I fell in love with Aiden and Isabel too.
00:28:54Travis and Lori's love affair is moving quickly,
00:28:56and on New Year's Eve 2016,
00:28:58they decide to have a wedding ceremony
00:29:00right here in Lori's backyard.
00:29:07We had friends, family come over.
00:29:10It was fantastic.
00:29:13I was told they were getting married this day,
00:29:15that time, and I showed up.
00:29:16Lori had fixed up the five-acre property
00:29:19prior to the occasion,
00:29:20putting in a backyard fire pit.
00:29:23The couple later etched their initials
00:29:25into the concrete around it.
00:29:32Lori walked out to the Brantley Gilbert song,
00:29:34Fall Into Me.
00:29:38So we're sitting on bales of hay.
00:29:42My dad walks her down the aisle.
00:29:46Hi.
00:29:50The ceremony was underneath this big oak tree.
00:29:53Hi, Travis.
00:29:54Hi, Travis.
00:29:55Take you, Lori.
00:29:56Take you, Lori.
00:29:57We did this to really just show everybody
00:30:00and in front of God that we're committed to each other.
00:30:04This is a lifelong thing.
00:30:06Travis, you may now kiss the bride.
00:30:09Yay!
00:30:10So Lori has moved on and put her ex, Michael Shaver,
00:30:13behind her, but Michael's friends and family
00:30:15have not been able to do the same.
00:30:18Still wondering why it's been so long.
00:30:20At this point, more than two years
00:30:23since any of them have laid eyes on him.
00:30:25Clearly, something wasn't right.
00:30:27And that lifelong friend, Scott Amatuccio,
00:30:30is about to make a stunning discovery.
00:30:33It made my stomach sink right away.
00:30:35I was like, oh my God, I can't believe it.
00:30:37It made my stomach sink right away.
00:30:54New Year's Eve, 2016.
00:30:56Lori Shaver and Travis Filmer
00:30:58had a wedding ceremony in their backyard.
00:31:00Until death do us part.
00:31:03Just steps from that fire pit
00:31:05where their initials are etched in the concrete.
00:31:08And a year later, the couple had even more to celebrate.
00:31:12And I looked at her and I was like, are you serious?
00:31:15And she's like, yeah, I'm pregnant.
00:31:17And I was just floored, like absolutely floored.
00:31:21They would quickly add another child
00:31:23to their growing brood, along with the two kids
00:31:25Lori shared with her ex, Michael Shaver.
00:31:28Michael hadn't been seen by friends and family
00:31:30since he seemingly walked away from his life.
00:31:35Michael would pop up every now and then
00:31:36with Facebook messages to his family, to his friends.
00:31:43I don't wanna be bothered.
00:31:44I'm working on myself.
00:31:47Even though the years were passing,
00:31:48friends and family said the occasional texts
00:31:51and Facebook messages led them to believe
00:31:53Michael wanted to be left alone.
00:31:58Everybody rationalized it as give the man space.
00:32:03We knew what he was going through
00:32:04with the family by this point.
00:32:07Yeah, I should have probably texted Mike more
00:32:08and called him, but we were never much
00:32:10in the texting or phone calls.
00:32:14I had my first daughter and I was so consumed in that.
00:32:17It was just not on my mind.
00:32:22Scott then gets a phone call from his ex-fiance,
00:32:25Katina Vasquez, that would change everything.
00:32:29She tells him she happened to be over
00:32:31at Michael and Lori's house two and a half years ago,
00:32:34right after Lori said Michael skipped town.
00:32:39She had noticed that Mike's possessions were there.
00:32:43Clothing was there, his wallet was there,
00:32:45his phone, all that was there.
00:32:48His car was still there, his guns were still there.
00:32:52Basically everything he owned.
00:32:54Yes.
00:32:55He walked away with nothing.
00:32:59I don't even know that he took his toothbrush.
00:33:01Katina tells Scott that during that visit,
00:33:03she asked Lori where Michael was.
00:33:06Lori told her that Mike got picked up in a black SUV
00:33:10one day, never came back.
00:33:12He would never do that to his family or kids.
00:33:15In a vacuum, you're not gonna put anything together,
00:33:18but you start getting these other details,
00:33:21clearly something wasn't right.
00:33:25It's those details that made my stomach sink right away.
00:33:29Eventually, Scott pieces together
00:33:31that no one has seen or spoken to Michael
00:33:34in two and a half years.
00:33:37He decides it's time to reach out to Michael's sister
00:33:39in upstate New York to compare notes.
00:33:42Scott and I just happened to be messaging
00:33:45back and forth one night,
00:33:46and we're like, none of this adds up.
00:33:51Stacy and I had been talking,
00:33:53they were getting these weird messages.
00:33:57They'd be kind of short.
00:34:00They were out of character.
00:34:02There was a wording that he didn't use.
00:34:05He never called me bro.
00:34:07There was a couple there that said,
00:34:09just leave me alone, I'm moving to California.
00:34:12Just some crazy stuff that just
00:34:15didn't sound like him whatsoever.
00:34:18He had texted me one day and asked,
00:34:22what's mom's number?
00:34:23I tried to call her, it must've been changed.
00:34:26My mother's phone number's been the same for 30 years.
00:34:30With his connections growing,
00:34:31Scott does what any of us might do
00:34:33when trying to track down his now long lost friend.
00:34:36He logs onto Facebook.
00:34:39I wasn't too active on Facebook back then,
00:34:42so I go to his page,
00:34:44and then I had noticed the profile picture
00:34:47had just been updated the month prior
00:34:52to some group of guys in a bar.
00:34:55I had to like zoom in and make sure,
00:34:58like nobody looked like Mike in that picture.
00:35:01Scott then does a reverse Google image search
00:35:04trying to determine where this photo came from.
00:35:07Turns out, it matches a photo
00:35:09from a Bloody Mary mix company.
00:35:12Clearly, somebody took that picture online
00:35:14and put it as his profile picture.
00:35:18And Michael's recent posts also seemed off.
00:35:21They were different from what he
00:35:22typically posted in the past.
00:35:25His activity on Facebook was usually pictures of himself,
00:35:29pictures of friends, pictures about the plane
00:35:31that they would work on.
00:35:32All of that ended, and then it started up
00:35:35with various silly memes
00:35:40that were just not in keeping
00:35:42with his personality whatsoever.
00:35:46Michael's friend Scott, along with his sister Stacey,
00:35:48knew it was time for something drastic.
00:35:52Since I was in New York and Scott was in Florida,
00:35:55Scott told me that he would go to the police.
00:35:59When I called, I said,
00:36:00I'd like to file a missing person report.
00:36:03You know, they asked,
00:36:03well, when's the last time you've seen him?
00:36:06Frankly, I said, years.
00:36:08They didn't take me seriously at first
00:36:10because you're now filing
00:36:11a missing person report years later.
00:36:14Scott is able to convince police in Florida
00:36:17that his concerns are serious enough
00:36:19to warrant a welfare check.
00:36:22And when a deputy goes to Lori Shaver's house,
00:36:25something catches his eye
00:36:27that's been hiding in plain sight for years.
00:36:30And that's when I really started
00:36:31to getting chills up my back.
00:36:34I'll take you there to see for yourself.
00:36:37This has got to be the strangest case in my career.
00:36:41What happened to your husband, though?
00:36:42Have you not seen him since 2015?
00:36:46I had to rethink and re-question myself.
00:36:48Everything that had been happening to me
00:36:51had been happening.
00:36:52It was likely a lie.
00:36:54And just when you think you know
00:36:55where this story is headed, a new twist.
00:36:59Today, I'm coming to you.
00:37:01My family and I are begging you,
00:37:03asking for your assistance.
00:37:05Everyone was just like, what?
00:37:10There was just more and more twists and turns.
00:37:13I'm living in the twilight zone
00:37:15and I can hear the theme song going on.
00:37:17Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.
00:37:32I've seen it on TV, on the news,
00:37:34but I never, ever imagined this would be happening
00:37:37next door to me.
00:37:38That's when you knew something was up.
00:37:40We just started to ask her questions
00:37:41about the whereabouts of Michael Shaver.
00:37:43Did she say why he left?
00:37:45What happened?
00:37:46She did not.
00:37:46She has no idea where he would be.
00:37:48Lori called me crying, saying the police are here
00:37:53and they're looking for Michael.
00:37:55He proclaimed he had the special skills to kill somebody.
00:38:02When you walked out here, were you immediately surprised?
00:38:05I really started to getting chills on my back.
00:38:08But what about the chills
00:38:10when a totally unexpected person confesses?
00:38:14Everyone was just like, what?
00:38:17When you have a witness take the stand that says,
00:38:19I had a role in it, that's pretty incredible.
00:38:23I know it sounds weird.
00:38:24I know it does.
00:38:26The reality was that he was digging his own grave.
00:38:30That was one of the most bizarre videos I've ever seen.
00:38:45This has got to be the strangest case
00:38:47in my career that I've ever seen.
00:38:50It was as though this guy had literally just vanished.
00:38:55November 7th, 2015 was the last time
00:38:58anyone saw Michael Shaver alive.
00:39:01His family hadn't seen him.
00:39:03His friends hadn't seen him.
00:39:05No one had actually talked to him on the phone
00:39:07or talked to him in person.
00:39:09It was very weird.
00:39:11They will tell you that Michael Shaver
00:39:14they will tell you he would never, ever
00:39:17leave his two children.
00:39:20He had five acres of property and a tractor.
00:39:23He walked away with nothing.
00:39:26It's been two and a half years
00:39:28since anyone has seen or spoken to Michael Shaver.
00:39:31His loved ones are concerned.
00:39:33So his longtime friend, Scott Amatuccio
00:39:36decides to call law enforcement.
00:39:38He requests a welfare check.
00:39:44So this is South Claremont.
00:39:46We're probably 40 minutes Northwest of Orlando.
00:39:50So this is a very rural area.
00:39:53Corporal Corey Anderson was one of two deputies
00:39:56that respond to the welfare check call
00:39:58that day in February, 2018.
00:40:01It was out of the ordinary.
00:40:03I haven't seen a call like that in a long time.
00:40:06What about it felt unusual to you?
00:40:09Usually a wellbeing check is,
00:40:12hey, I haven't heard my friend in a while.
00:40:14Can you go check on him or have him call me?
00:40:16Not anything like he's missing.
00:40:18He's not responding to calls.
00:40:20He's making posts that aren't like him to me.
00:40:24People just don't up and leave, you know?
00:40:37So you pull up to the house.
00:40:39What's the first thing you do when you get here?
00:40:41Deputy Morris and I, we meet
00:40:44and then we approach the house together.
00:40:46Did someone answer the door?
00:40:47Yes, Ms. Shaver answered the door.
00:40:50She had a two-week-old infant in her arm.
00:40:52So she stood on the porch
00:40:54and we just started asking her questions
00:40:56about the whereabouts of Michael Shaver.
00:40:59What was her demeanor like?
00:41:00Was she friendly?
00:41:02She was cool as a cucumber.
00:41:04And it made it almost alarming.
00:41:06It gave me chills speaking with her.
00:41:09Lori really didn't seem very apprehensive
00:41:12or nervous or surprised.
00:41:14The way that she was answering questions,
00:41:16withholding information.
00:41:18What kind of withholding of information?
00:41:20Some of the dates that she used for when he was last seen,
00:41:24the last time he was at work.
00:41:26The day-to-day things that she would know weren't adding up.
00:41:29Did she say why he left?
00:41:31What happened?
00:41:32She did not.
00:41:33She simply said that he absconded
00:41:35and has not been seen or heard of.
00:41:37Has no idea where he would be.
00:41:40Corporal Anderson then asks Lori
00:41:43if he can take a look in the backyard.
00:41:45She welcomed him onto the property.
00:41:47She appeared to be very cooperative.
00:41:49She appeared as though she had nothing to hide.
00:41:51Obviously, they noticed it was a beautiful,
00:41:53sprawling five-acre piece of property
00:41:55and they were able to walk the outside of the property
00:41:58and look around.
00:42:00The deputies noticed multiple outbuildings in the backyard,
00:42:03as well as a chicken coop, rabbit hutch, a fire pit,
00:42:07and an above-ground swimming pool.
00:42:09But when they ask if they can perform
00:42:11a more thorough search of the backyard, things take a turn.
00:42:15And that's when her cooperation ended suddenly.
00:42:17She said, you guys need to get off my property.
00:42:19Oh, immediately.
00:42:20And you can contact me when you turn.
00:42:22So that was a huge red flag for me.
00:42:26That's when you knew something was up.
00:42:28She shut that down and couldn't get them
00:42:30out of there fast enough.
00:42:33So detectives got the report from the deputies
00:42:35and they began to plan their next steps
00:42:38and how they were going to move forward
00:42:39to get back out to the property
00:42:41and do a more thorough search.
00:42:43I had just left work.
00:42:45I was on my way home and Lori called me crying,
00:42:48saying the police are here and they're looking for Michael.
00:42:54She was very upset.
00:42:55She didn't, she seemed like she didn't really know
00:42:57what was going on.
00:43:00Lake County Deputy State was his friend
00:43:02who initially reported him missing.
00:43:04Today, we're learning more about Michael Shaver.
00:43:07I turned on the news and that's when I hit
00:43:10that he's actually missing, that it's not good.
00:43:15I remember thinking it's a complete,
00:43:18it's a complete misunderstanding.
00:43:20They're going to find that he just wasn't
00:43:22where he was supposed to be.
00:43:23It just kind of, it kind of snowballed
00:43:26into he's missing, missing.
00:43:30Working to learn what happened
00:43:32to a man who's been missing.
00:43:33Channel Nine was there from the beginning.
00:43:35We went out to her house and said,
00:43:37hey, your husband's missing.
00:43:41Is there anything you want to say?
00:43:44Wanted to ask you about the Sheriff's Office investigation
00:43:46into your missing husband.
00:43:49You have an attorney?
00:43:53She basically told us to get away from her truck
00:43:56and she didn't want to talk to us.
00:43:59What happened to your husband though?
00:44:01Have you not seen him since 2015?
00:44:03His wife didn't report him missing at all
00:44:07in years go by.
00:44:08You would think a spouse would want to talk
00:44:11and get his picture out, get the information out.
00:44:15She blew by her cameras, she had nothing to say.
00:44:22Meanwhile, as detectives are digging for more clues
00:44:25into Michael's possible whereabouts,
00:44:27they discover some startling information.
00:44:31They learned that his driver's license was expired.
00:44:33There was not a new driver's license
00:44:35issued in any other state.
00:44:36Good luck, have fun.
00:44:39His pilot's license were expired.
00:44:41There was literally no trace of Michael,
00:44:43no matter what they tried, no matter where they looked.
00:44:46Detectives then start interviewing Michael's friends,
00:44:48relatives, and coworkers.
00:44:51They start building a timeline to try to pinpoint
00:44:53exactly when someone last laid eyes on him.
00:44:57And it turns out they think it was at that tractor show
00:45:01that Michael and his family attended
00:45:03two and a half years earlier
00:45:05with his friend and coworker, Frank Merritt.
00:45:11He was there at the tractor show
00:45:13and then the next week he was gone
00:45:15and there was nothing in between.
00:45:18And it was just days later that Michael sent
00:45:20that strange text to his boss, abruptly quitting his job.
00:45:26Based upon all of these bizarre circumstances,
00:45:29we knew something had happened to Michael.
00:45:34Three weeks after that initial welfare check,
00:45:37detectives finally secure a search warrant
00:45:39for Laurie Shaver's property.
00:45:44It was a huge scene.
00:45:47There was law enforcement up and down the road.
00:45:50Investigators come in with cadaver dogs
00:45:52and they start searching the property.
00:45:55I've seen it on TV, on the news,
00:45:57but I never, ever imagined this would be happening
00:46:00next door to me.
00:46:02One of the cadaver dogs is walked along the backyard
00:46:04and alerts to a dirt mound multiple times.
00:46:10That's when they brought in all the big guns,
00:46:12the big equipment.
00:46:16We began digging up that yard.
00:46:19We dug a very significant area.
00:46:22We realized that there was nothing to be found there.
00:46:26The fire pit was our next point of interest.
00:46:32Once they started digging, we heard some yelling.
00:46:35All of a sudden I noticed activity happening
00:46:38and running around.
00:46:41I could tell that it was a big fire pit.
00:46:43I could tell that it was a big fire pit.
00:46:45And running around.
00:46:48I could tell something had been discovered.
00:47:01Investigators with Florida's Lake County Sheriff's Office
00:47:04are back at Michael and Laurie Shaver's home
00:47:06armed with a search warrant.
00:47:08They're now scouring the property.
00:47:11And they knew that it was something about that fire pit.
00:47:13Something was going on.
00:47:16The decision was made to bust up that concrete
00:47:19and dig down below that fire pit to see what we could find.
00:47:22And there were tents up from investigators
00:47:24as they were excavating and sifting through the dirt.
00:47:30Once they started digging, we heard some yelling,
00:47:33but we knew we were on to something.
00:47:38I have never seen anything like this before
00:47:41in person in my backyard.
00:47:44Oh, they're running.
00:47:47At one point, investigators in the crime scene,
00:47:50technicians, they're digging in that area.
00:47:53We see them put their hands over their eyes.
00:47:57And we said, hey, something just happened.
00:48:04And I can tell you that we have found
00:48:05what appears to be a bone that is consistent
00:48:08with that of a human upper arm bone.
00:48:10They began to dig, and three feet below, there was Michael.
00:48:14A gruesome discovery in a backyard in Florida.
00:48:17Police are finding what are believed to be human remains.
00:48:21What did you find in that gravesite?
00:48:23There was a blue tarp, and beneath the blue tarp
00:48:27were the remains of Michael Shaver.
00:48:29His body was found to be wearing a pair of underwear,
00:48:32a pair of shorts, he had on a pair of socks.
00:48:35There was a piece of a piece of a piece of a piece of a piece
00:48:39There was a piece of a fitted sheet also around the body.
00:48:44So it was evident that the body had been wrapped up
00:48:47and placed in that grave.
00:48:49How deep was this grave?
00:48:51About three and a half feet.
00:48:53Investigators say the remains were skeletonized
00:48:56and looked like they had been there for quite some time.
00:49:03When the body was discovered,
00:49:05Lori was sitting in her truck.
00:49:09My photographer and I walked over
00:49:11and we knocked on the window.
00:49:12I'm on the phone with my attorney right now,
00:49:14and I'm not making a statement.
00:49:17Shortly after, she took off.
00:49:19It just seems strange that that's when she decided
00:49:22to take off and leave after being there for hours
00:49:25while the search was being conducted.
00:49:31Three weeks before the remains were found,
00:49:33back on the day of that welfare check,
00:49:35Corporal Corey Anderson was convinced
00:49:38there was something underneath that concrete.
00:49:42And this is where the fire pit was.
00:49:44Yes, the cement slab was here.
00:49:47It's what he noticed then
00:49:49that raised investigators' suspicions
00:49:51enough to come back with a search warrant.
00:49:54As I was approaching the cement slab,
00:49:56you could clearly see a depression,
00:49:57and I took out my cell phone
00:49:59and just started snapping pictures.
00:50:01And you saw that depression?
00:50:04Were you immediately surprised?
00:50:06I was, and that's when I really started
00:50:08to get chills up my back.
00:50:11You immediately thought it was a shallow grave?
00:50:13Absolutely.
00:50:14It's unmistakable.
00:50:15It was the size of a human adult body.
00:50:20It was really a remarkable sequence of events
00:50:24where a deputy who actually had the experience
00:50:26that this particular deputy did
00:50:28just asked permission,
00:50:29hey, maybe you guys mind if I take some pictures
00:50:31and walk around the back of the yard?
00:50:34The right person saw what started this case.
00:50:42I mean, I consider Mike my best friend.
00:50:45It's pretty tough knowing that
00:50:48he's laying in the dirt like that.
00:50:55It was absolutely devastating.
00:50:57Then I had to go and tell my mother.
00:51:01It was the hardest thing in the world I ever had to do.
00:51:07I just started just wailing and crying,
00:51:11and it's a terrible thing.
00:51:14It's just terrible.
00:51:17As painful as that moment was,
00:51:19Michael's family says, finally,
00:51:21all the hurt and confusion
00:51:23around his unexplained disappearance made sense.
00:51:27When they said that they got all the remains out,
00:51:30I knew in my heart that was Michael.
00:51:33Are you guys Michael's family?
00:51:36Even though he couldn't have been identified that day,
00:51:42I knew that it was.
00:51:47Buried in the backyard,
00:51:49police revealing new clues
00:51:50in the mystery disappearance of a husband.
00:51:52I mean, that's just not something
00:51:53that we deal with and see every day.
00:51:56The media attention just grew.
00:51:58Human remains were found buried in his wife's backyard.
00:52:01The headline for the day was
00:52:04missing man's body found in his backyard.
00:52:07In that same place, his wife had remarried.
00:52:12In the wedding video,
00:52:14you see her come down to that oak tree
00:52:17where they exchange vows.
00:52:20And her husband is dead,
00:52:23buried underneath that concrete slab
00:52:26that she's walking down to marry the next guy.
00:52:30She had her wedding virtually on top of her husband's body.
00:52:36We were sitting in the fire pit,
00:52:38by the fire pit,
00:52:39not knowing that Michael is under that fire pit.
00:52:44That's where I sat.
00:52:46Until death do us part.
00:52:48So this whole scenario,
00:52:50it's like I'm living in the twilight zone
00:52:52and I can hear the theme song going on.
00:52:55That, that's what's going on in my life.
00:52:59Excuse me, sir.
00:53:00Do you guys know anything about what's going on inside?
00:53:03No comment.
00:53:04When they found the remains under the fire pit,
00:53:07I couldn't believe that.
00:53:10Lori had kept telling me that she didn't know of anything.
00:53:13But now investigators have Lori Shaver in their sights
00:53:16and they want to hear exactly what she does know
00:53:19and when she knew it.
00:53:24After Michael Shaver's remains are recovered
00:53:26from a shallow grave in the backyard
00:53:28of the home he once shared with his wife, Lori,
00:53:32the medical examiner determines that what put him there
00:53:35was a single gunshot to the head.
00:53:39The projectile was found inside of the skull.
00:53:42It was a pretty much a straight-on bullet
00:53:45that went right through the skull.
00:53:47It was a single bullet that went right through the skull.
00:53:50It was a single bullet that went right through the skull.
00:53:53It was a pretty much a straight-on shot
00:53:55to the back of the head.
00:53:56Any DNA, any evidence of who would have put him there?
00:53:59Pretty much everything in that grave site
00:54:01was sent to Florida Department of Law Enforcement
00:54:02for analysis and there was no DNA that was found,
00:54:05mostly because of the decomposition process.
00:54:07Over time, it's really hard to find DNA
00:54:09if it's in the ground, even if it had been there.
00:54:11Yes.
00:54:13But to many people's surprise,
00:54:15even after the gruesome discovery,
00:54:18Lori Shaver remains a free woman.
00:54:21Lori wasn't immediately arrested
00:54:23and that was something that was pretty frustrating
00:54:24for the family, but investigators had to build a case
00:54:27against her and they knew that they would only get one shot.
00:54:30Lori Shaver didn't get arrested right away.
00:54:32Correct.
00:54:33Why?
00:54:34There were still phone records, Facebook records
00:54:37to obtain, and piecing together all of these different
00:54:39pieces of evidence to try to figure out what happened.
00:54:44We knew he was last seen November 7th
00:54:46and didn't show up to work November 10th.
00:54:49So we believe it happened during those three days
00:54:52that he was killed by Lori.
00:54:56If that's true, that's months before Lori
00:54:59met Travis Filmer, who says he believed
00:55:02she was divorced from Michael Shaver.
00:55:04Lori didn't divorce her husband during this time
00:55:07that Michael was missing.
00:55:09Lori never went after him for child support.
00:55:12Finding out that Lori was not divorced, that was a shock.
00:55:17And detectives are the ones that told me.
00:55:20Travis says that after Michael's body was found,
00:55:22he and Lori didn't discuss the investigation.
00:55:25Lori and I, we didn't talk about things.
00:55:29She never told me that there was a body on the property.
00:55:32I know based on my experience with law enforcement
00:55:36and being in trouble, it was extremely important
00:55:38for me to not ask about anything.
00:55:40Did I have questions?
00:55:42100%, I very much did.
00:55:45But I knew that I could not talk to her about the case.
00:55:51But detectives are asking questions,
00:55:53interviewing those close to Lori like Katina Vasquez,
00:55:56the ex-fiance of Michael's childhood friend.
00:56:00They wanted to know what she knew
00:56:02about Lori's supposed divorce from Michael Shaver.
00:56:06She was telling me that she was filing for divorce.
00:56:08And then next thing you know, she's married.
00:56:11I was like, how does that happen that quick?
00:56:12Like, it was just weird.
00:56:13Like, I'm like, this makes no sense.
00:56:16Investigators also tracked down that friend of Michael's
00:56:20who Lori said picked him up in a black SUV
00:56:23and drove him to Georgia.
00:56:26Did you ever give him a ride to Georgia?
00:56:28Georgia? No.
00:56:29No.
00:56:30Do you recall what kind of vehicle you owned?
00:56:33I believe it was a Mitsubishi Galant.
00:56:36Do you remember what color it was?
00:56:38Blue.
00:56:40When detectives talk to the Shaver's neighbor, Wilma,
00:56:43they hear something really dark and unexpected.
00:56:47She tells them Michael Shaver actually started the project
00:56:52that eventually became the fire pit and concrete slab
00:56:55where his body was found.
00:56:57He was working very hard to make her a duck pond back there.
00:57:00And the reality of what he was doing
00:57:04was that he was digging his own grave.
00:57:07What physical evidence was there?
00:57:09We have a body buried in the backyard.
00:57:11We have evidence of a gunshot wound.
00:57:14And we have a caliber bullet that was consistent
00:57:17with the type of weapon that was sold by Lori Shaver.
00:57:23Another witness comes forward to say
00:57:24that after Michael disappeared, leaving everything behind,
00:57:28Lori began selling his belongings.
00:57:31You are the owner of JB Guns in Bushnell, Florida.
00:57:34Is that correct?
00:57:35I am, yes, sir.
00:57:36After I had seen the news report
00:57:38and I saw the lady's picture, as in the wife,
00:57:42of the missing person,
00:57:45I was like, I bought all of his guns.
00:57:48I'm pretty sure of.
00:57:49She's like, well, he just up and left.
00:57:52And I'm just selling all of his stuff.
00:57:56Key to this case, police think Lori Shaver was hiding
00:57:59that her husband was gone for good,
00:58:01pointing to data suggesting those Facebook updates
00:58:04and messages to family and friends, seemingly from Michael,
00:58:07were actually coming from her.
00:58:10These Facebook message postings
00:58:12by both Lori Shaver's account and Michael Shaver's account
00:58:15had the same IP address,
00:58:16which means the same person was using them both.
00:58:18Everything pointed back at Lori Shaver.
00:58:25More than two years after Michael Shaver's remains
00:58:27were found and his wife has now been arrested for his death,
00:58:30Lori Shaver is charged with second degree murder
00:58:33with a firearm.
00:58:34She pleads not guilty.
00:58:37I didn't understand how she was possibly arrested.
00:58:40Yes, they're saying that they found a body on the property.
00:58:42Yes, they're saying that Lori
00:58:44had some major involvement in this.
00:58:47There's always two sides to a story.
00:58:50There always is.
00:58:52There's no doubt in my mind that Lori did not,
00:58:54she didn't kill Michael.
00:58:58After about two and a half months in jail,
00:59:00Lori Shaver is released on bond.
00:59:03That's when this bizarre video surfaces
00:59:07of Lori and her defense attorney
00:59:09making a plea to please donate to her defense fund.
00:59:14Good morning, I'm Jeffrey Weggs.
00:59:16Sitting to my left is Lori, a client of mine.
00:59:20I don't know why I've been targeted,
00:59:22why I've been set up or charged with this heinous crime.
00:59:26I am not guilty.
00:59:28I am a daughter, I'm a friend, I'm a neighbor,
00:59:33I'm a servant of God, I'm a wife.
00:59:37And I'm a devoted mother of four.
00:59:39In that same video, Lori's attorney says
00:59:41his client is innocent.
00:59:42And at trial, they are prepared to say
00:59:45who actually killed Michael Shaver.
00:59:47We're not gonna mention his name.
00:59:49He proclaimed he had the special skills to kill somebody.
00:59:54As her trial nears, Lori Shaver's attorney
00:59:56makes another shocking claim.
00:59:59Now, it's not just one person responsible
01:00:01for her husband's murder, but two.
01:00:04And who they say that second shooter is
01:00:07takes everyone by surprise.
01:00:10Honestly, I've never heard such craziness.
01:00:21What's happening today, jury selection
01:00:27will begin in the trial of a Claremont woman
01:00:29accused of killing her husband.
01:00:31In September, almost nine years after Michael Shaver
01:00:34was last seen alive, prosecutors are now hoping to prove
01:00:37that Lori Shaver was the one who killed him.
01:00:40But they'll have to do it without fingerprints,
01:00:42DNA, or other forensic evidence.
01:00:46Ladies and gentlemen, this is a case about common sense.
01:00:48In your opening remarks, you made the comment
01:00:52that you have to use a little bit of common sense here.
01:00:55We have the defendant's husband buried in her own backyard.
01:01:01And that points directly to Lori Shaver.
01:01:04In their opening statement, the defense finally discloses
01:01:07who they say actually killed Michael Shaver.
01:01:11It wasn't Lori, it was Jeremy Townsend, or Jay,
01:01:15that man she had an affair with before meeting Travis.
01:01:18And they say someone else fired a shot too,
01:01:22Lori's then seven-year-old daughter, Isabel.
01:01:29I shot my dad, that was a bombshell.
01:01:32The defense presents a stunning story to the jury.
01:01:37This bell-shaped, and this young girl,
01:01:41in desperation and in fear, runs and retrieves a file.
01:01:48As she believes, she shot Michael.
01:01:52They were separated.
01:01:53Michael came in the residence one morning.
01:01:56Lori was getting the children ready for school.
01:01:59Lori refused to go back with him.
01:02:01He got angry, started beating on her.
01:02:04Lori ended up on the floor.
01:02:07Isabel retrieved a handgun,
01:02:10and she believes she shot Michael Shaver.
01:02:14And at that very moment, the defense says
01:02:16Jeremy stormed into the house and took control.
01:02:20And watched Jay, takes a gun from Isabel,
01:02:24takes a gun from Isabel, shoots Michael Shaver,
01:02:27and says, Lori, get these kids out of here,
01:02:31I'll take care of this.
01:02:33But prosecutors say this story is preposterous.
01:02:37They argue that Lori Shaver acted alone
01:02:39and killed Michael for her own selfish reasons.
01:02:43To be with her then-boyfriend, Jeremy Townsend.
01:02:47What is the motive here?
01:02:49Lori really wanted to be with Jeremy.
01:02:52She actively sought to ruin that relationship
01:02:56between Jeremy and his wife.
01:03:00She pretended to be Michael
01:03:02in order to out Jeremy to his wife.
01:03:05And she tried to do that through Facebook messages
01:03:08from Michael's Facebook account.
01:03:10And when she didn't get a response
01:03:11from Jeremy's wife, Vanessa,
01:03:14she sent a bouquet of flowers to Vanessa with a card.
01:03:19The card that came with those flowers,
01:03:21did that include a message?
01:03:23It did.
01:03:25And can you go ahead and read that message
01:03:27to the jury, please?
01:03:30Sorry.
01:03:31That's okay.
01:03:33This card says it's a difficult day for you.
01:03:35It is.
01:03:37Says, roses are red, violets are blue,
01:03:40my wife is a whore, your husband is too.
01:03:43Sorry about this.
01:03:45Check your Facebook message, we need to talk.
01:03:47Mike.
01:03:49The flowers that were delivered to Vanessa Townsend
01:03:52were actually paid for from Lori Shaver's bank records.
01:03:58Up until this point, did you have any knowledge
01:04:03that your husband was potentially having an affair?
01:04:06No.
01:04:08Lori was convinced that Jay was leaving his wife
01:04:11and that couldn't have been further from the truth.
01:04:14State calls Jeremy Townsend.
01:04:16He walked into the courtroom in a suit,
01:04:18but he looked like Aquaman with the long hair.
01:04:21Was there ever a time that Lori Shaver expressed to you
01:04:25that she wanted you to leave your wife to be with her?
01:04:28Yes.
01:04:30And was that what you wanted?
01:04:32No.
01:04:34They're supposed to be friends with benefits,
01:04:35no strings attached.
01:04:37He went on and said, I had nothing to do with us.
01:04:40At any point, did you shoot or injure Michael Shaver?
01:04:43Did you shoot or injure Michael Shaver?
01:04:45No.
01:04:46At any point, were you involved
01:04:47with disposing of the body of Michael Shaver?
01:04:50No.
01:04:52And after the affair was exposed,
01:04:55what happened with your relationship with Lori?
01:04:57I cut it off.
01:05:00They say it's not the crime that gets you caught,
01:05:02but the coverup.
01:05:04And prosecutors argue that Lori's attempts
01:05:06to impersonate Michael online
01:05:09show all the signs of a badly executed coverup.
01:05:14Facebook helped solve the murder.
01:05:16Michael's family up north had heard
01:05:18from his Facebook account.
01:05:21Was there a period of time where you reached out
01:05:25to Michael Shaver and attempted to communicate with him?
01:05:27Yes.
01:05:28It says, hey, Uncle Michael.
01:05:30And what was that response?
01:05:32Who are you?
01:05:34I don't have any family anymore.
01:05:36I have no idea, no clue who you are.
01:05:39Never stop messaging me.
01:05:41Lori was using his cell phone and his Facebook account
01:05:45to present this facade that Michael was still alive.
01:05:50The defense argues the digital evidence is unreliable.
01:05:53It could have been anyone
01:05:54accessing Michael Shaver's Facebook account.
01:05:58You'll ask yourself this, how does this digital data
01:06:02prove that Lori Shaver killed Michael Shaver?
01:06:06It doesn't.
01:06:08But prosecutors say they have more than digital evidence.
01:06:12They argue that Lori had access to multiple firearms
01:06:15that could have killed Michael Shaver,
01:06:17including the pink and black 38 caliber revolver
01:06:21that she sold after Michael was last seen.
01:06:25Did you examine that firearm?
01:06:27Yes, I did.
01:06:28Were you also provided a projectile recovered
01:06:32from the cell of Michael Shaver?
01:06:34Yes.
01:06:35The projectile was in very rough condition.
01:06:39Despite the damaged condition of that projectile,
01:06:42were you able to determine the caliber?
01:06:45In this case, the caliber was determined
01:06:48to be 38 caliber class.
01:06:51But the defense points out that the bullet recovered
01:06:53from Michael Shaver's skull could not be definitively linked
01:06:58to her pink handgun.
01:07:00Let me just debunk something that's uncorrect.
01:07:02The projectile that was in the body
01:07:05could not be linked up to the gun
01:07:07that you're sitting there holding, correct?
01:07:10All class characteristics were in agreement.
01:07:13The result of the individual comparison was inconclusive.
01:07:17How many guns fit into that class?
01:07:22Thousands of guns, if not tens of thousands.
01:07:26With the state's case laid out,
01:07:28it's now the defense's turn.
01:07:29And they're about to call their star witness,
01:07:32Isabel Shaver, Lori and Michael's daughter,
01:07:35who was just seven years old when he was last seen alive.
01:07:38She's now 15 and says she's prepared to tell the jury
01:07:42what really happened.
01:07:44Isabel, I'm sorry.
01:07:46I have to do this.
01:07:48Do you know anything about the death of your father?
01:07:51I do.
01:08:03Have you given thought to taking the stand?
01:08:05Still haven't decided.
01:08:06I would love to be able to speak my story.
01:08:09Now the defense also confirms with me
01:08:11that they say her daughter will take the stand.
01:08:15Lori Shaver's defense is built on what she says
01:08:18really happened the day her husband died.
01:08:20And to lay out that story,
01:08:22they call to the stand the person they claim fired
01:08:25what they say was the first of two shots,
01:08:28her 15-year-old daughter, Isabel.
01:08:33My name is Isabel Shaver.
01:08:35Because she's a minor, Judge Kerry Rada
01:08:37does not allow Isabel's face
01:08:39to be shown during her testimony.
01:08:42How old are you, Isabel?
01:08:44I'm 15.
01:08:45I turned 16 this Sunday.
01:08:47Would you explain your relationship to Lori Shaver?
01:08:52Lori Shaver's my mother.
01:08:54Me and her are very close.
01:08:56She's like my best friend and a mom in one.
01:08:58Has anybody pressured you to testify in this cause?
01:09:01Absolutely not, no.
01:09:03Do you know anything about the death of your father?
01:09:06I do.
01:09:08Do you know anything about how your father died?
01:09:11I do.
01:09:12Isabel tells jurors a stunning story
01:09:15that when she was just seven years old,
01:09:17she witnessed a violent confrontation
01:09:19between her mother and her father, Michael,
01:09:22while the two were separated.
01:09:25He pushed her onto the ground.
01:09:27He pushed her onto the ground
01:09:29and he started kicking her in the stomach and in the back.
01:09:32And he was like saying
01:09:33that he was going to kill her at this time.
01:09:36I heard my mom screaming for help, obviously.
01:09:38And then he put his foot on the side of her face
01:09:43and pushed it into the ground.
01:09:44And I didn't hear her anymore.
01:09:47And so I went to my mom's room
01:09:51and I went at her end table
01:09:53and I grabbed her gun.
01:09:57And I shot him.
01:10:04Isabel Shaver goes on to say
01:10:05that after she fired that shot,
01:10:07the man her mother was dating at the time,
01:10:10Jeremy, or Jay as they called him,
01:10:12came barreling into the house.
01:10:16He took the gun from me
01:10:17and then he shot him again.
01:10:19He told my mom to take us out of the house,
01:10:22take us to school.
01:10:23We're not to tell anybody.
01:10:25We can't call the cops.
01:10:26We can't say anything
01:10:27or else he was gonna do the same thing
01:10:29to me and my brother.
01:10:31Isabel stated this house was so riddled
01:10:34with so much atmospheric tension
01:10:37that it just didn't seem different.
01:10:41It just was kind of the way they were living.
01:10:44But she didn't say anything to anybody about it.
01:10:47Remember, Jeremy Townsend testified
01:10:49he had no involvement in Michael Shaver's murder
01:10:52or the disposal of the body.
01:10:54And when prosecutors cross-examine Isabel,
01:10:57they challenge her memory of this event.
01:11:01You don't know what grade you were in
01:11:02when that happened, right?
01:11:04I don't.
01:11:05You don't know what month this happened in, correct?
01:11:08Correct.
01:11:09You don't know what year this happened in, correct?
01:11:12Yes.
01:11:13When you have a witness take the stand
01:11:15that says, I had a role in it,
01:11:17that's pretty incredible.
01:11:20I think it was very clear
01:11:22that she was willing to do whatever she could
01:11:26to try to protect her mother
01:11:27and avoid her mom going to prison.
01:11:29It also was not consistent at all
01:11:31with any of the physical evidence.
01:11:33Her version of events involved two shots,
01:11:38and there was absolutely no question
01:11:41that there was only one shot in this case,
01:11:43and that was the one to the back of the head.
01:11:45The defense would call Lori Shaver.
01:11:48Next up, the woman at the center of the case
01:11:51facing life in prison takes the stand in her own defense.
01:11:56Let's talk about the event that's landed you here.
01:12:00I got up, the whole, got my coffee,
01:12:04and then that's when I noticed
01:12:05he was sitting out on the back patio.
01:12:09So I went out there, and we started talking,
01:12:12and it escalated.
01:12:15He was holding onto me.
01:12:18And at that point, I was just trying to convince him,
01:12:24like, okay, okay, okay, enough, we'll work it out.
01:12:29And he told me not this time.
01:12:31I was screaming as he's smashing my face into the porch.
01:12:37What's the next thing you recall?
01:12:40I more or less heard it,
01:12:44more or less heard it,
01:12:46and then I think I seen her.
01:12:50What's this about, Deb?
01:12:52She had fired a gunshot.
01:12:55The next thing I recall is seeing Jay, Jeremy,
01:13:00and hearing the gunshot essentially at the same time.
01:13:04He tells me to take the kids, get them out of the house,
01:13:08and he would take care of it.
01:13:11He insinuated that if we said anything,
01:13:17that he was not going to take the blame for this.
01:13:21So what did you do?
01:13:23I took the kids.
01:13:25I left.
01:13:26Lori Shaver tells the jury
01:13:27that when she came home that day,
01:13:29Jeremy was gone, and so was Michael's body.
01:13:33According to Lori, she had no idea
01:13:37his remains were buried in her backyard.
01:13:43Lori, the jurors are gonna ask themselves,
01:13:46why didn't you call the police?
01:13:48Eric, I didn't know what to do.
01:13:52When prosecutors finally get their chance
01:13:54to question Lori Shaver,
01:13:56they challenge her for more details
01:13:58about what they say is a story full of lies.
01:14:02The biggest question I have for you
01:14:04is when did your husband get killed?
01:14:08The exact date, I cannot recall.
01:14:11It was beginning of May, 2016.
01:14:14It was not November.
01:14:16Prosecutors say Lori wants jurors to believe
01:14:19that Michael was actually alive in May
01:14:22because that's a full six months
01:14:24after he was last seen by anyone.
01:14:29When he left and moved out, he left his car, correct?
01:14:34He stopped going to work
01:14:36and lost his job because of it, correct?
01:14:40I was not aware of that at that time.
01:14:43November of 2015, he just vanishes
01:14:45off the face of the earth.
01:14:47No one can account for him, correct?
01:14:50I don't believe that that's true.
01:14:54The day that he showed up in May of 2016,
01:14:57what vehicle did he use to get to your house that day?
01:15:01So he just walked?
01:15:05When you take what she said happened there that day
01:15:08and then just break it down,
01:15:10well, if that's true, where was Mike's car?
01:15:12If that's true, when his body is found,
01:15:15why is he dressed like he was in bed sleeping?
01:15:18It's hard to make a story fit
01:15:19all of the different pieces of evidence if it's not true.
01:15:23She made up this May, 2016 story to distract.
01:15:28Jeremy Townsend talked to law enforcement
01:15:30three separate times.
01:15:32The evidence that has been presented
01:15:34is not that in May of 2016,
01:15:38Jeremy Townsend shot this man in the back of the head.
01:15:41It's that Lori killed him in November of 2015.
01:15:45Mike is buried in her backyard.
01:15:48She's the one that installs the fire pit
01:15:50and puts the cement slab over his body.
01:15:54She lied to friends, family, and law enforcement
01:15:57about his whereabouts for years.
01:16:01All the evidence points to her
01:16:03because she is guilty of murder in the second degree.
01:16:08All right, thank you, Mr. Caraccio.
01:16:10Mr. Wicks.
01:16:11Yes, sir.
01:16:13Has any single witness taken the stand
01:16:17and shown you one piece of evidence
01:16:21that established Lori Lee Shaver killed Michael Shaver?
01:16:27Zero.
01:16:29Zero.
01:16:32And then it's left to the jury to decide
01:16:35which version of the story is the truth.
01:16:38And you wondered in the end
01:16:40if the person who did this
01:16:41was ever going to be held responsible.
01:16:43Has the jury reached a verdict?
01:16:45Yes.
01:16:59Right now, closing arguments are done
01:17:00for the Lake County woman charged
01:17:02with her husband's murder.
01:17:04She is facing three possible charges,
01:17:06second degree murder being the biggest one
01:17:08up to life in prison.
01:17:13The biggest thing that I struggle with
01:17:16and that my heart breaks for is my kids.
01:17:20I don't want to see the look on their face
01:17:23when I have to tell them mom's not coming home.
01:17:27The jury deliberates for just under four hours
01:17:30before returning a verdict.
01:17:33We the jury find as follows as to count one of the charge,
01:17:37the defendant is guilty of second degree murder.
01:17:44The jury saw through all of her lies, manipulations,
01:17:50all of it.
01:17:51They didn't buy her story for a second.
01:17:54They didn't buy her daughter's story.
01:17:58It was hard to hear Isabel saying those things
01:18:02about her dad.
01:18:02And I kind of feel really bad for her.
01:18:05Everybody that knows Mike knows he had a great relationship
01:18:08with both of his kids.
01:18:10Your reaction, your thoughts,
01:18:11as soon as that verdict came down?
01:18:13Elation.
01:18:14We were very happy.
01:18:15This was a long time coming.
01:18:16It will not bring him back,
01:18:20but there will be justice for him finally.
01:18:24It was celebration, sadness, several different emotions.
01:18:28She was part of our family.
01:18:30Somebody that you feel that you love and you trust.
01:18:33So also a letdown in some ways.
01:18:35And to see somebody that you did care for at one time
01:18:38that did something so bad,
01:18:40that you feel like you should have been there for her.
01:18:43No, I did not get the answers.
01:18:47Why?
01:18:48Why wouldn't she have just let him go in a divorce?
01:18:53She could have carried on her life.
01:18:57She got married here.
01:18:59Yep, right out there.
01:19:00We walked by here, walked through here,
01:19:03walked all the way out and yep,
01:19:08right past the house.
01:19:10And yep, right past a human being that was just,
01:19:17it's so disturbing because again, we've been out here.
01:19:25I've stood right where he was and I didn't know.
01:19:30It upsets you?
01:19:34Yeah.
01:19:36Michael, he was such a great, great person.
01:19:43He loved everybody with all that he had.
01:19:47And I think his spirit will finally be able to be at peace.
01:19:58Lori Shaver was recently sentenced to life in prison
01:20:01for Michael Shaver's murder.
01:20:02She says she plans to appeal her conviction.
01:20:04And for their part, Michael's family says
01:20:06they are hoping to establish visitation
01:20:08with the two children he shared with Lori.
