00:00A 31-year-old woman, known only as Lee, fell victim to a luxury watch scam after listing
00:08her limited edition Rolex Day-Date 126519LN on social media.
00:15A buyer, identifying himself as Raymond Pang, agreed to purchase the watch for RM203,000
00:22via bank transfer.
00:23They arranged to meet at a shopping mall on Monday night, but Pang sent an employee in
00:28his place.
00:29After confirming the watch's condition, the employee proceeded with the sale.
00:34Then Raymond texted me as well, saying that he will do the instant transfer now.
00:39Afterwards, Raymond Pang sent me two bank slips that look exactly real.
00:45Lee handed over the watch after seeing the amount reflected in her current balance.
00:50However, she later realised it was not in her available balance.
00:54Sensing something was wrong, she contacted the bank's fraud team.
00:58And then the fraud team staff told me that there is this kind of fraud nowadays, you
01:04need to be extra careful.
01:05And then they even revealed to me that those two cheques that Raymond Pang banked in, he
01:11actually banked in at around 5.41pm.
01:15So this doesn't make sense because our meeting time was 8pm, but he banked in the cheque
01:19at 5.41pm, which is before our meeting time, before he got the watch.
01:24Since the cheque had not cleared, the money vanished from her account after a few days.
01:29When she tried to contact Pang, his number was unreachable.
01:33She filed a police report on March 3rd, and later found similar cases on social media
01:38where scammers used the same tactic.
01:41After what happened to me, I actually went to Xiaohongshu, I searched two keywords, watch
01:47and scam.
01:48And then I realised there were two posts recently talking about the same kind of methods of
01:54scams that happened to me.
01:56One was happened on 18th of December last year in Guantan, whereby a watch shop got
02:02scammed on the exact same way as me.
02:06Lee initially believed Pang was legitimate after seeing his photos with a well-known
02:10motivational speaker and receiving an award.
02:14MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head, Datuk Sri Michael Chong, believes the
02:19case can be solved as there is photo evidence of Pang's employee.
02:24He suspects the scammer impersonated Raymond Pang.
02:28I think this case can be over with if the investigation is seriously taken.
02:35Chong revealed his department had received 12 online purchase scam cases in the past
02:40three years, totalling 7.62 million ringgit in losses, with the largest case involving
02:46350,000 ringgit.
