Hong Kong's iconic Sunbeam Theater bids farewell after 52 years
One of Hong Kong’s most historic theatres, Sunbeam Theater, closed its doors for the last time on Tuesday, March 4, as over a thousand Cantonese opera fans gathered to bid farewell to the iconic venue.
Founded in 1972, the North Point landmark, long regarded as a cornerstone of Cantonese opera, is set to be transformed into a church following its final curtain call.
On Monday , the theater staged its last-ever performance to a full house. After the show, theater operator Edward Li hosted a farewell ceremony attended by audience members. The theater’s lights were switched off at 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday, marking the end of an era as the shutters were pulled down one final time.
Fans of Cantonese opera expressed their sorrow, many capturing the 52-year-old theater’s final moments on cameras and smartphones. The venue had played a key role in preserving Cantonese opera, which was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009.
