It’s a classic inter generational discussion that ‘it was better back in my day’, or ‘things are changing too much’, and a headteacher in Wales recently said that kids are being mollycoddled too much. I’m here in Cardiff asking people for their thoughts. Are Saturday detentions a step too far, or is more discipline and consequences just what young people need nowadays?

00:00Well for me I ain't really that naughty so it wouldn't affect me. I wouldn't say sadist
00:08but I'd say be more firm on naughtier children.
00:10I think it's a bit far. I feel like kids need to have fun to have balance.
00:16Yeah I feel like depending on the age range, if people are doing GCSEs or A-Levels they've
00:21already got enough stress going on during the week and then I would also say that you
00:25don't really know the responsibilities that the children might have at home and so asking
00:29them to come in on a weekend might not work depending on their family situation. If they
00:34can actually get into school if there were buses or if there weren't, you can't necessarily
00:38rely on the fact that they're able to come in.
00:39I don't really agree, I don't think it's fair to be honest. In the week, okay fair enough,
00:43but not sad.
00:44It's absolutely fair. I think kids are molly-collied too much and I think the government bringing
00:50up this whole, you know, you can't even smack your kid on the backsides is a joke, absolute
00:56joke because that's why the crime rate's gone up and the world is in a bad state because
01:02there's no discipline. When I was a kid I was scared of the police, I was scared of
01:06my teachers. These days teachers say it's a huge time to get stabbed.
01:10I would, yeah, I would never go to there and I don't think my mum would let me either.
01:14I think that would cause a lot of problems in the world. You go to school for school
01:19and like the weekends, like, you're meant to be a little brave.
01:24There's no need to punish a child because if you explain to that child, okay, the reason
01:30that you wanted it to do something, okay, right, then sort of like you'd find that there's
01:37no need. It's given the child an example of why it is needed to behave in that way.
01:47It seems like every day there's a new fight happening or our teacher gets hit or something
01:53like that so the attention is perfectly reasonable.
