Chris Wilder's verdict on Sheffield United's defeat to Leeds United, speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield
Transcript
00:00Chris, defeat to Leeds tonight, your thoughts on the evening?
00:04Yeah, a disappointing end to a mainly positive evening for us.
00:10Go toe-to-toe with the best team in the division.
00:12I said that the best team all along wasn't winding anybody up or spinning anything,
00:16you know, and we kept them quiet for 60, 65 minutes.
00:20Thought we started off absolutely superbly on the front foot.
00:25Big moments to go two up, which we didn't capitalise on.
00:29They gradually grew into the game in the back end of the first half
00:34and then they're 1-0 down away from home
00:37and they've got players that go for it.
00:41We had a few moments, we just lost control of the game a little bit
00:45in terms of keeping hold of the ball.
00:48I said to the players, we felt as if we needed to score on every opportunity
00:53and every attack, where we just needed to be a bit more patient
00:56and keep control of the game.
00:59Disappointing from our point of view, their goal, what, 70-odd, 72, 73 minutes?
01:05It's about 72, yeah, I think.
01:08Stop the cross, see the run out, but they're piling people full
01:12because they've got a risk.
01:13There was a couple of moments just before that where,
01:17counter-attack transition opened up for us to try and get a second goal,
01:25but didn't see a run out in the box.
01:28That's the way they play, there's a left-back in the middle of our goal.
01:32So, disappointing that we've not stopped the cross and seen the run out
01:36and then, I think, 88, 89 minutes.
01:39I think maybe, from our point of view, not being negative on it,
01:43but we've gone toe-to-toe with the top side,
01:45you've possibly shook hands for a draw
01:47and it's incredibly disappointing to concede from a set play.
01:50We got done by a set play up there on 78, 79 minutes
01:55and we've got it done again on a set play
01:57and we've not got first contact on it.
01:58The boys run off one of our players and they find a second goal
02:04and then, ultimately, a fabulous finish late on.
02:06I think the scoreline is a little bit unjust and harsh on us,
02:09but we've got to go again.
02:11Sometimes you've got to stay,
02:12they've had a little bit more in the locker than us,
02:16so we have to stay humble and work our way back into a performance
02:24and a result on Saturday.
02:26Our reaction to disappointment has been outstanding all season,
02:29so I'm not going to beat the players up on tonight,
02:31they've gone toe-to-toe with, from a metrics point of view,
02:36the best team in the division.
02:37I think Jack was just saying it there,
02:38we were 3-1 to win at home, which is ridiculous.
02:42So, the bookies go on the metrics
02:44and that's how far they've been ahead of every team in the division.
02:49We've run them close, don't like to lose games at home,
02:52but we have to look bigger picture and look at where we are,
02:57what we need to do to recover from disappointment.
03:00As I said, we lost against Leeds, we lost against Middlesbrough,
03:04we won nine out of ten,
03:05massively stretched over the Christmas period and the whole game,
03:11and then we go and win five or six out of seven.
03:15So, 12 games to go, dust ourselves down and go again.
03:19A lot of football to be played, a lot of points to be won,
03:20and let's go again and regroup
03:25and see if we can go and get ourselves a win on Saturday.
