Lac du Der, a French reservoir originally designed for flood control, has become an unlikely winter paradise for tens of thousands of cranes, due to the warming effects of climate change. Previously, the lake served as a fleeting rest stop for migrating cranes en route to warmer climates in Spain and North Africa. However, rising temperatures have transformed the once-frozen islets within the reservoir into hospitable havens, and the surrounding fields offer ample foraging opportunities. As a result, increasing numbers of these majestic birds now choose to spend the entire winter at Lac du Der, dramatically altering their traditional migration patterns. Though this unexpected influx of cranes has turned the reservoir into a popular tourist destination, the burgeoning crane population has also created challenges for local farmers.
