00:00Today is International Hamburger Day, and who doesn't love a good burger?
00:05The toasted bun, crisp lettuce, sweet tomatoes, and in the middle of it all, a juicy patty.
00:12Burgers are widely hailed as one of Dubai's most popular dishes.
00:16There are burger joints almost anywhere you look.
00:19But who invented the humble hamburger?
00:21Many countries have claimed to be the first to put a ground beef patty between two slices
00:26of bread.
00:27Sadly, it isn't 100% clear who the real burger inventor is.
00:32What we do know is that the classic sandwich gained fame in America in the early 19th century.
00:38A common misconception is that the first hamburger was created in Hamburg, Germany.
00:43In reality, the patty was invented there, but the idea of eating it as a sandwich was
00:49a concept created much later.
00:52During the 19th century, Hamburg became famous for their beef.
00:56They were known for chopping, seasoning, and molding them into patties.
01:00When German immigrants began arriving to America during that century, many earned a living
01:06by opening restaurants in large cities.
01:09It wasn't long before many of their menus featured an Americanized version of the Hamburg
01:14steak.
01:15Beef that was minced or chopped, combined with garlic, onions, salt, and pepper, then
01:20grilled or fried.
01:22In 1837, New York's Delmonico's restaurant offered a Hamburg steak on its first menu.
01:28At the time, it cost 10 cents.
01:31Today, the burger is one of the most popular and recognizable dishes in the world.
01:36Just add cheese, take a bite, and it'll change your life.
