00:00Schizophrenia is a mental illness where a person has hallucinations, delusions, and bad thoughts
00:07that affect their life and work.
00:11But what if one of your loved ones has it? Let's take a look at this.
00:17In 2020, the same year when Ruslan Kulikov was born,
00:23is also the year when his father was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
00:29But more than 24 years have passed since he was admitted to the Rehabilitation Center,
00:35and he still remains there.
00:38When Ruslan spent his entire life in a coma, he was barely able to be with his father.
00:45But despite this, he worked hard in life.
00:49Aside from being able to graduate from college,
00:52he is also a TV host, UNESCO ambassador,
00:57a beauty pageant title holder, and a schizophrenia advocate.
01:02Because of this, Ruslan's love for his father grew, and he shared his story with the world.
01:12And if that's true, we will now have Ruslan Kulikov with us.
01:16He is also our host here at RSP. Good morning.
01:19Rus, welcome back here to Rise and Shine, Philippines.
01:23Hello, good morning. Thank you, RV, Dianne.
01:27Hi, Ruslan. It's nice to see you again.
01:29We missed you here at RSP.
01:31But our discussion today is also about your personal experience and your advocacy.
01:38Everything you posted online started with your story about your father's illness.
01:42What inspired you to have the courage to share this story in public about your father, Ruslan?
01:52Thank you, Dianne.
01:53Actually, before, I was hesitating about sharing this speech.
01:59Because we all know that some Filipinos are very not knowledgeable.
02:06You know, we're not really ready to receive knowledge regarding mental health.
02:17We need to break the stereotype regarding mental health.
02:23That's why I started joining pageants before.
02:27Maybe this is my main purpose.
02:29That's why I succeeded in some part of pageantry.
02:36Not just here in the Philippines, but also internationally.
02:39Because I think my advocacy really means a lot to those people.
02:44When I posted on TikTok, I realized that a lot of people have experienced this illness.
02:53Rus, let's go back to when you were a kid.
02:56You didn't have any money when your father was admitted to the rehabilitation center.
03:02How did your mother understand you?
03:05How old were you when you understood your father's condition?
03:09Actually, until that time, when I was a kid, I didn't have any ADHD.
03:14Even my grandmother, who raised me, always told me when I go to school,
03:21if they ask me where my father is, I should tell them where I am.
03:24Maybe it's because they're taking care of me.
03:27Or maybe later, if I tell them where I am,
03:30for example, I told them at the rehabilitation center,
03:32they would say that my father is crazy.
03:34But what we do not know is that
03:37what we do not know is that this is just an illness,
03:41same with other illnesses.
03:43It's just a coincidence that this illness is called schizophrenia.
03:46It's just another part of the organ, which is our brain.
03:51At that time, it was hard for me to explain it as a kid.
03:54But as I grew older, I understood it better.
03:59And it's a big part of my pageantry
04:04as to why I got to know this illness and understand it better.
04:08It's not just for me,
04:10there are more people who know about it,
04:13even my family members,
04:15that schizophrenia is okay,
04:17it's not just because you're crazy.
04:21There's a reason for everything.
04:23There's a reason why my father has schizophrenia.
04:26Because prior to the diagnosis of schizophrenia,
04:30he was really okay.
04:32He was a normal person before.
04:34How is your father now, Ross?
04:38He's okay.
04:40He's still in the rehabilitation center.
04:42There, in the rehab,
04:45they have their activities every day.
04:48There are some...
04:50There are some OJTs who go there.
04:54They have a gathering.
04:56They're busy there.
04:58Yes, they're busy.
05:00They have their medications every day
05:02because it's hard
05:04if they don't take their medicine.
05:06Because schizophrenia,
05:08there's still no cure
05:10at this time.
05:12So they need to continue taking their medicine.
05:15That's what worries them.
05:17And they become normal
05:19after taking those meds.
05:21Okay, Ross,
05:23I was planning to start a charity organization
05:28because your father has a similar situation.
05:30Can you tell us about it?
05:32Actually, Audrey,
05:34the time has come
05:36that I want to make
05:38this charity a reality
05:40because
05:42when I started
05:44I posted on TikTok
05:46and a lot of people discovered
05:48that not only my father experienced this,
05:50but a lot of families
05:52experienced this
05:54illness
05:57with their family members.
05:59So, in part with UNESCO,
06:01I'm trying to reach them out
06:03on what we can do
06:05especially here in the Philippines
06:07or what we can do
06:09in collaboration regarding this
06:11illness
06:13that we Filipinos don't know much about.
06:15What is schizophrenia?
06:17So, a lot of people
06:19have this illness.
06:21I think 1% of Filipinos
06:23have this illness.
06:25Well, Ross, thank you for sharing your story
06:27on Rise and Giant Philippines.
06:29I hope you can come back here
06:31so that we can feel you again
06:33here on RSVLive.
06:35Thank you again for sharing this story
06:37and you are an inspiration to many people.
06:39Your advocacy is a big help
06:41for those who are experiencing the same experience
06:43like your father.
06:45Thank you, Ross, and we hope to see you soon.
