00:00In Italy, there are only 400,000 women who work in STEM, the fields of science, technology, art, engineering and mathematics,
00:14considered of male-dominated interests.
00:17One of the aims of SIRM, the Italian Society of Interventional Medical Radiology,
00:22is to break down the stereotypes that women see as unsuitable to deal with scientific matters
00:27and promote their inclusion in this reality and in the leadership positions.
00:32This has been mentioned at the Sustainability Convention in Radiology, Research, Innovation and Responsibility,
00:38promoted in Rome by SIRM and organized with the Bracco Foundation
00:41in the International Women's and Girls' Day in Science.
00:45We absolutely need to make awareness campaigns.
00:49Not for nothing, we have an international day, also promoted by the UN,
00:54which is the International Women's and Girls' Day in Science.
00:59Why? Was it enough to just say women?
01:02No, girls, because since we were little, we have to educate, sensitize,
01:08educate our children and grandchildren to their attitudes, regardless of gender.
01:16SIRM was the first scientific society to equip itself with a Dei commission,
01:21Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, a group dedicated to the representation not only of women,
01:26but also of minorities, to promote inclusion in the medical and scientific world
01:31and reduce the risk of losing talents.
01:33The International Women's and Girls' Day in Science
01:37was also an opportunity to discuss the gender gap in STEM and how to fill it.
01:42The International Women's and Girls' Day in Science
01:47aims to try to implement systems to fill the gender gap,
01:54which go from the need to have reference models, mentors,
01:59and this is only possible if we value the scientists we currently have,
02:06the need that already in families and schools women are pushed towards these disciplines,
02:12and that women can also understand that they will have the same salary treatment once they graduate,
02:21because in addition to the gender gap, there is also a salary gap between women and men.
02:28At the center of the convention organized by SIRM, sustainability in radiology.
02:33Sustainability is an extremely interesting topic for our scientific society,
02:37because several times, many events, many discussions and debates,
02:42there are various aspects, those that concern not only the energy aspect,
02:46but also the economic aspect.
02:48We fight every day with defensive medicine,
02:50which has an estimated cost of several billions of euros.
