00:00I mean, I'm wearing Ariana and Cynthia all in one.
00:04I'm giving a shout-out.
00:05I'm holding space for Ariana and Cynthia.
00:08Hey, Harper's Bazaar.
00:10This is Zoe Saldana,
00:12and today we're looking back at some of my fashion moments.
00:15This is Fashion Flashback.
00:19This was the center stage premiere,
00:22and I'm wearing Prada.
00:23The stylist was moi, and it was my birthday.
00:27And I remember this because my sisters gave me a cell phone,
00:31and I never used it.
00:33I didn't know how to use it.
00:34It was an Okia thing, and I never knew how to use it.
00:37Such an important moment.
00:38This was my very first time wearing Prada,
00:40my very first time going to a premiere,
00:42my very first time being in a film
00:45and premiering it in New York.
00:47Everything about it was just how we say in dance,
00:51kiss night.
00:52Wow, this was the world premiere of Avatar in London.
00:58I was wearing Roland Marais.
01:00At a glance, you would think that it's a fabric
01:02that isn't flexible,
01:03and yet if you cut it in the right places
01:06and you create the seams in the right areas,
01:09it moves with you.
01:10So Roland has a clear understanding
01:12on where to create the cuts and where to create the seams.
01:16I've never really met a designer like that.
01:20It was just really interesting as it was coming together,
01:22and I enjoyed every process of watching Roland
01:25and discussed with my stylist, with Petra,
01:28on how they were gonna build it around me,
01:30and I just felt really beautiful when I wore it.
01:33Oh my gosh, this is for the 2010 Academy Awards ceremony,
01:38and I was wearing Givenchy.
01:40I feel like I had a relationship,
01:42a very intimate, personal relationship with this dress.
01:44Petra knew from the moment she saw it in the runway
01:48that this was the dress
01:50that I needed to wear for the Oscars.
01:52I remember we were in the middle
01:54of this worldwide press junket,
01:56and Petra found a way,
01:58along with the Givenchy team at the time,
02:01to bring the dress wherever I was.
02:03There was a moment where I was in Paris,
02:04and the dress was in Paris,
02:06and we tried the dress in Paris,
02:07and we had one of its first fittings,
02:09and then the dress was in New York,
02:11and I remember just looking at my grandma and Petra
02:14as they were inspecting every part of that dress,
02:19and Petra was looking at my grandma and going,
02:21do you like it?
02:22Because we all knew
02:23that she was such an exceptional seamstress,
02:25and she was looking at the seams
02:26and looking at every part of the dress,
02:29and she would go, it's really good.
02:32It's really good.
02:33By the time I got to wear it that day,
02:36I just remember feeling beautiful,
02:38and the colors about this dress,
02:41it was just so avatar.
02:44Ooh, okay, 2018.
02:48This is a Givenchy look.
02:50As a New Yorker, it spoke to me,
02:52and it made me feel so beautiful in the simplicity of it,
02:57and I remember telling Mara, who does my hair,
03:01Mara Roszak, and Vera Steinberg, who's done my makeup,
03:04telling them I want the little as possible
03:08on my hair and makeup.
03:09I just wanna be me,
03:10and I remember feeling my most beautiful
03:13and my most authentic self,
03:15and that was the beginning of a breakthrough in my life
03:18where it's 2018, I'm a mom of three boys,
03:22I am owning the time and the space that I'm in,
03:27and I'm having a clearer picture
03:31of who I wanna be at all times.
03:34I really felt confident and very beautiful.
03:38Oh my God.
03:39This is the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony,
03:42and I'm wearing Miu Miu.
03:44Petra was definitely wanting to channel old Hollywood.
03:48I was too busy having an out-of-body experience
03:50to make decisions for myself,
03:52and she definitely took the wheel on this,
03:54and so did Vera and Mara, and I was very happy,
03:58because I was just trying to write my speech
04:01and make sure that I didn't leave anybody out.
04:04I think this was around the time
04:05where I started to also just ask for comfortable shoes.
04:09In the early 2000s,
04:13I remember Petra and I walking down the cobbled streets
04:16of London and Paris in these Louboutins
04:19that were four inches high, five inches high,
04:23and I remember thinking, oh my God, I am unstoppable.
04:26I will never die, and then four years later,
04:29married with three boys,
04:32just looking at certain shoes that looked painful
04:35would make me shed tears.
04:37We do extensive research on what are comfortable heels.
04:41For instance, these are still high, coño.
04:47This is the 2019 Met Gala, and I'm wearing Michael Kors.
04:51He's such a delicious New Yorker, oh my God.
04:55So I says to ha, I says to ha.
04:57I just love the way he talks,
04:59and he tells the best stories, by the way,
05:01and I like when he and Petra sort of pick these outfits
05:05for me whenever I do wear Michael Kors,
05:09because I tend to have a lot of fun.
05:11Lately, in the last years of my life,
05:12I've been really experimenting with colors like brown tones,
05:16honey, amber, cinnamon, cimarron.
05:20I like these colors.
05:21They really speak to me, and I like being adventurous
05:24within these colors, like adding purple tones.
05:27I'm not afraid of color.
05:28You know, my mom is right.
05:29Colors are beautiful, because I was always like
05:31black and white, black and white, black and white,
05:33and a ton of red, and my mom, who's such a Caribbean woman,
05:36she's always like, well, orange and coral and yellow,
05:41and aquamarine, and in my younger years,
05:43I was always like, oh, shush, woman.
05:46I will never wear such insanely loud colors,
05:50and now I am all about colors, too, so thank you, Mom.
05:56I fucking do believe I was embodying camp.
05:59This was disco camp, okay?
06:02This look is a Schiaparelli look
06:04for the premiere of Avatar in Los Angeles
06:06for the Way of Water.
06:07I think this is the first time
06:09that I wore Schiaparelli to a red carpet.
06:12I don't wear hair pieces that often.
06:16I tend to be a little more natural,
06:17but now that I'm getting older,
06:19I'm just a lot more open to experimentation,
06:23and Mara brought this piece
06:25that was kind of like a little bang piece,
06:27and it was very Audrey Hepburn-esque of her,
06:30and I loved it, so this really dictated
06:33then what we were gonna do with the makeup,
06:35then Vera felt inspired to kind of keep it super simple
06:38with the eyes and just do these lips that were great,
06:41but it all started with this dress.
06:43There's just something really simple
06:44and very complex about this dress,
06:47and also very elegant,
06:49and something that's very young about this dress,
06:53I have to say.
06:54It felt comfortable.
06:55It was very structured, but also very loose.
06:57I loved it.
06:59Oh, my God.
07:00Okay, so this was for the premiere
07:03of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in Paris.
07:07I'm wearing Armani Privé here.
07:10I was shooting Emilia Perez post-Oscars 2023
07:15for Avatar, Way of Water,
07:17and then I jumped straight into
07:19Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Press
07:21while shooting Emilia Perez.
07:24I'd never felt more fortunate,
07:28just grateful to know that as an artist,
07:31I was working and celebrating my work at the same time,
07:35and still taking chances,
07:38because Emilia Perez was a chance.
07:40This dress was just so beautiful,
07:42and it reminded me of the Arlequines,
07:47you know, those porcelain clowns
07:49that your grandmother,
07:50everybody's grandmother used to have in their home.
07:52I remember I did break one of these Arlequine clowns,
07:56and she was so upset with me,
07:58so getting to wear this dress
08:00felt like I was redeeming myself.
08:03I've always been a sucker for pastel pink
08:06and a green put together.
08:08It's just beautiful.
08:09They're just romantic.
08:10I mean, I'm wearing Ariana and Cynthia all in one.
08:15I'm giving a shout-out.
08:16I'm holding space for Ariana and Cynthia.
08:21I won my very first Golden Globe in this dress,
08:25and I'm very proud of this design,
08:27because I felt like I was a part
08:28of choosing what I wanted to wear.
08:31Petra found this beautiful look
08:34from an old collection of Anthony's,
08:36and they together chose the fabric
08:39and the look and the style of it,
08:42and then we put together the hair and the makeup.
08:45Everything about this look was me,
08:49a much more hyped version of me in my dreams,
08:52but it was still me.
08:55And then the cape,
08:56there was a cape that Petra insisted on the look having,
09:00and it was sort of like an ode
09:01to the 80s Yves Saint Laurent,
09:04and Anthony really was super stoked about doing that.
09:08And there was something about putting that cape
09:09over my arms and working it in the red carpet
09:14that just made the look almost surreal,
09:18for me, at least.
09:19I felt great.
09:20You dream of these moments for so long.
09:24You just don't like to admit it,
09:25because you don't like to be that vulnerable,
09:27but I think that every artist,
09:28every actor dreams of that moment,
09:30and then all of a sudden, that moment comes true.
09:33I'm just grateful that the dress was comfortable.
09:36I could've been naked.
09:37I wasn't even in the room.
09:41Thank you guys for just spending this time with me.
09:45Check out my cover for Harper's Bazaar.
09:47Ah!
