00:00 Hello Harper's Bazaar, I'm Zendaya,
00:01 and today I'm gonna be looking through
00:03 some of my fashion moments.
00:05 This is Fashion Flashback.
00:07 Let's just say this was an era, okay?
00:11 This photo is from 2012.
00:13 Me and Law technically still worked
00:15 with each other at this time,
00:16 but I didn't have the ability to work with him
00:19 for everything 'cause I was very expensive.
00:21 So a lot of the times I had to just kinda go
00:24 with whatever I had in my closet.
00:25 At this time, I don't think I was stepping out.
00:27 Like I wasn't like, ooh, I'm killing it with this.
00:29 I think it was like, child, I got a thing to do for this.
00:32 Shake it up, like let's just, what do we have?
00:34 What can we put together?
00:36 So I had this pair of sequined skinny jean.
00:39 Let me tell you how itchy they are.
00:40 Wouldn't recommend.
00:41 I guess I have like a little,
00:43 a tank top under there or something.
00:45 So I took the blazer from my Sweet 16 suit
00:48 and I just put it on this 'cause that's all I had.
00:50 I have a metal kind of necklace.
00:53 It's supposed to mimic what seems to be a collar of sorts,
00:56 made out of chain.
00:57 This is the part that really gets me,
00:59 is the hair.
01:00 I just wanna understand why I went bone straight
01:02 on the sides, everywhere else, bone straight.
01:05 And then I just wanted a swoop in the front.
01:08 Why would I do that?
01:09 Why would I just, I bust bone straight
01:11 but I want the front to go like this.
01:12 So now I have a mustache in the front of my head
01:15 and bone straight everywhere else.
01:18 It was like windy and flyaways.
01:20 They are sprayed so they're so crunchy.
01:23 They're so crunchy.
01:24 Everything is moving but the front is not moving.
01:27 [sighs]
01:29 You live and you learn.
01:30 It's the BT Awards.
01:32 At this point, I was at every event
01:35 that I was not nominated for.
01:37 I just was like, I'm going and I'm getting dressed up.
01:40 This was a Law creation.
01:42 It was a skirt with a bomber jacket
01:44 and it was built as a set.
01:45 Law had a very specific vision about what he wanted.
01:49 He's like, I wanna put a baseball cap with it.
01:51 That's kind of how I developed my fashion thing.
01:54 Kind of laying outside of, at the time,
01:56 it was Disney Channel.
01:57 I wanted to kind of figure out
01:58 how to be my own person outside of it.
02:00 And we did that by just going to everything
02:03 and we looked good.
02:04 This is, I believe, Ruben's Singer.
02:07 This one is from 2015.
02:09 It was a fashion show for charity.
02:12 Everybody had to wear a red dress
02:14 and this was my red dress.
02:16 I love it.
02:17 I have my Sokates as usual.
02:18 I think that has been Law and I's staple shoes
02:21 since the beginning.
02:21 Nothing like a pointy-toed pump.
02:23 Sokate, I got it in every color,
02:25 especially my white ones.
02:27 I wear them with everything.
02:28 And even then, that was our go-to shoe.
02:31 I think it looks fantastic on everybody.
02:33 I did a runway show in middle school.
02:36 I went to an art school and the fashion department
02:38 did a runway show and I was in that.
02:41 So it wasn't my first time on the runway.
02:43 All right, this next one actually is one of my favorites.
02:46 This was Greatest Showman premiere in Australia.
02:49 I just thought it was so cool.
02:51 I mean, I remember Law showing me the picture
02:53 and I remember trying it on for the first time.
02:55 It's Moschino.
02:56 I loved how literal it was.
02:58 I loved, like I literally was a butterfly
03:01 and just how structurally it held that wing
03:05 and the colors and everything.
03:08 I remember Law was like, "I really want yellow eyeshadow."
03:12 I think that was him who said that.
03:15 And I didn't have yellow eyeshadow
03:16 'cause I did my makeup for this press tour.
03:18 My assistant Darnell, who's also like my brother,
03:21 he had to like, bless him, run out
03:23 and like he bought like every yellow eyeshadow
03:25 he could find to complete the look, of course.
03:29 The only thing we changed about it was there,
03:30 I think there were antennas on the runway.
03:32 Like there were antennas on.
03:33 I was like, okay, maybe not that literal, right?
03:35 We could take the antennas off.
03:37 This suit, I love this suit.
03:39 It was a men's suit, but it fit me really well
03:42 and I felt very confident in it.
03:44 This is my hair, so I didn't really do anything.
03:47 I just kind of do what I usually do,
03:49 which I wake up, put some product in it,
03:51 scrunch it up and just flip it all to one side.
03:54 It gave me Julia Roberts vibes.
03:56 I know she wore like a suit to the Golden Globes once
03:58 and it reminded me of that in some ways,
04:01 but it was easy, it fit really well,
04:04 it was super comfortable.
04:05 I love this one, I still have this suit.
04:07 This was my first Emmys.
04:09 This is Vera Wang.
04:11 I remember seeing the sketches for it, I loved it.
04:13 And we had to pick a color.
04:16 And at the time, I was just obsessed with emerald green.
04:18 I had these emerald green chairs
04:20 in my living room I had just gotten.
04:21 I temporarily dyed my hair red
04:24 and I felt like I love that color combination.
04:28 And I've seen many prom dress recreation of this,
04:30 which is really cool.
04:32 Also fun fact, I almost missed the red carpet.
04:35 It was closed, do you remember that?
04:36 It was closed and they were like, you can't take pictures.
04:40 You can't, the red carpet is closed.
04:41 I said, oh, I'm taking pictures in this dress, all right?
04:45 I feel good, I feel confident, I got my red hair, okay.
04:49 I got a nice green dress
04:51 and I'm gonna get a picture in this outfit.
04:53 I kind of snuck onto this little side red carpet
04:57 that was kind of hidden.
04:59 And there was a couple of photographers that knew me
05:01 and I was like, just went over there
05:03 and I was like, got my picture.
05:05 And then I left, so my background looks different
05:07 from everyone else's 'cause I wasn't on the main red carpet.
05:10 I was on a side thing that I just was like,
05:13 I'm getting pictures, I'm getting this outfit,
05:15 I feel good, I feel good tonight.
05:17 This is the 2020 Critics' Choice Awards.
05:20 This is the infamous Tom Ford breastplate.
05:23 I have, I actually framed the breastplate
05:25 'cause I was just like, this is so cool.
05:27 They were originally like somebody else's boobs
05:29 and I put it on, it didn't quite fit me very well
05:33 and I asked if I could be scanned
05:35 to have my own custom breastplate
05:38 and they were able to do it, like digital scanning
05:41 and Tom Ford let me keep it.
05:44 Law had the vision for it,
05:46 he wanted to do box braids for this,
05:50 so I stayed up very late getting my hair done
05:53 and I had a good night.
05:54 I didn't win, but who cares?
05:56 This is the Venice Film Festival.
05:58 It's one of my favorites again.
05:59 I would say this kind of came about
06:02 because when this collection came out,
06:04 which this wasn't a dress,
06:05 it was like a corset or kind of thing,
06:08 but I saw it and I immediately,
06:10 mind you, Dune hadn't come out yet,
06:13 it wasn't even close to the time I said,
06:15 I wanna wear something like a version of this,
06:17 a dress version of this for Dune
06:19 and I texted to Law and he was like, let's do it,
06:21 let's make a custom, let's ask them if they'll do it.
06:24 They made a body cast, so a woman came to my house
06:27 and we went outside and she casted,
06:31 molded my body and that became the shell
06:35 and this is made of leather, but it kind of looks liquid,
06:38 but it's all solid, so it was really difficult
06:41 to sit in and to breathe in,
06:43 'cause it doesn't, you can't breathe, it's just hard.
06:46 So the whole movie, I'm like,
06:49 like just focusing on breathing the whole night.
06:54 So it was many years in the making
06:57 and I had planned it for a long time before I wore it,
07:01 so I was really excited to finally be able to wear it.
07:04 This necklace, Bulgari, massive, emerald,
07:07 terrified to wear it 'cause I was like,
07:09 it's just so big.
07:11 And another random observation, I just wanna add this,
07:13 everybody says I have babies trapped in my knees
07:16 and I see it, do you see the baby doll head
07:20 trapped in my knee?
07:21 They have said this so many times and I really do,
07:25 I really do have little babies in my knees.
07:28 It's so weird, like you see the eyes and the,
07:31 anyway, you'll never be able to unsee it.
07:34 Maybe I shouldn't have said that
07:35 'cause now it's gonna make it even worse,
07:36 more people are gonna be like,
07:37 she's got babies trapped in her knees.
07:39 Okay.
07:40 This is 2023, this is at the NAACP Image Awards
07:45 and in Prada, it was pants in the runway
07:48 and we did a version of that.
07:51 So I was supposed to wear this on the carpet
07:53 and wear the, I wore like a black and green
07:56 vintage Versace to the award show,
08:01 but in the van, something in my brain went,
08:04 I have to switch these because I'm very like,
08:08 I'm a Virgo, I think about everything that can go wrong
08:12 a million times before they happen
08:14 and I knew that this crinkling, okay,
08:18 was gonna drive me crazy and I was stent,
08:20 how am I gonna pose to where it doesn't crinkle like that?
08:24 And I thought it would be better in movement on a stage.
08:27 So I said, you know what, let's switch,
08:29 I'm already in this in the van and I said,
08:31 I tried to pose and I was like,
08:33 I'm not gonna like it, let's change it
08:34 and I changed back into the other one in the car
08:38 and then got out and did the carpet.
08:40 So I'm glad that I did because I think that
08:42 I wanted to do it justice and I think it wouldn't have
08:45 quite worked on the carpet the same way.
08:47 So I'm glad that I switched them.
08:49 That being said, trust your instincts.
08:51 If you feel in your gut, wait a minute,
08:54 I think I should switch this, do it,
08:55 'cause otherwise you're gonna drive yourself crazy.
08:57 Just like, why didn't I listen to myself?
08:59 Thank you so much for watching.
09:00 Dune is coming out soon, so we hope you all enjoy it
09:03 and I'll talk to you guys soon.
