00:00Civil society group Aliran has urged the government to slash Tenaga Nasional Berhad's expenditure,
00:07particularly the benefits enjoyed by its top officials, instead of raising electricity
00:12tariffs for industries.
00:14In a statement, the group questioned the need to hike the tariffs when TNB's profits had
00:18soared in recent years, expressing concern that the cost of industry players would be
00:23passed on to consumers and worsen inflation.
00:27It said that TNB recorded a net profit of RM3.74 billion from January to September 2024,
00:34a 71.2% year-on-year increase compared with the same period the previous year.
00:40Meanwhile, referring to TNB's annual report for 2023, it said the utility firm's directors
00:46received around RM7 million that year, with non-executive directors earning up to RM20,000
00:53a month in various fees.
00:55Aliran said the pay, allowances and benefit cuts of TNB's top echelon would be a national
01:01service and urged TNB to review its agreements with independent power producers to optimise costs.
01:08Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had said that any increase in electricity tariffs in the
01:13second half of 2025 would be done carefully to ensure that businesses are not burdened,
01:18while 85% of households would continue receiving subsidies.
01:23It was reported that the government was finalising new tariffs for Peninsular Malaysia, set for
01:28review in July.
