00:00When you were a kid, always wanted to be a kicker?
00:02Did you play football? Did you play soccer?
00:04Like, how did you make this your expertise?
00:05Yeah, I played peewee football.
00:07Yeah.
00:07I was a heck of a running back back then.
00:08Running back, there you go.
00:09Oh, yeah.
00:09You had a little Christian McCaffrey.
00:10Yeah, I was on the Rams back then.
00:13But no, my parents are both college athletes.
00:15My dad actually went to school, same school.
00:18My dad went to go play soccer.
00:19Title IX came in, shut down the soccer program.
00:21Yes.
00:22In his fraternity, he had a bunch of football guys
00:25and they didn't like their kicker,
00:27so he went and walked on.
00:29I never actually played it down,
00:30but that's how I kind of got my start.
00:32My mom was a gymnast down there,
00:35so my dad likes to say, and everybody likes to tell my dad,
00:37that I get my athleticism from my mom.
00:39Flexibility.
00:40Yeah, but no, they went to Southeast Missouri State,
00:41so that's kind of where we got the kicking background.
00:44I always thought I was going to play college soccer,
00:46and went through the whole route of traveling around.
00:49I played some pretty, you know, not the highest level,
00:51but I mean, I played some pretty high-level stuff
00:54in club soccer, and then pretty soon,
00:56basically would just show up on Fridays
00:58in high school and kick.
01:00Had one walk-on offer to Arkansas State,
01:02and I was like, you know,
01:03not many people care about college soccer.
01:05A lot of people care about college football, you know,
01:06so went down that road, took my one walk-on offer
01:09with really no idea what I was getting myself into.
01:13Made a lot of mistakes along the way.
01:14Did you have a competition for that walk-on spot
01:16as a kicker?
01:17Was there another guy you were going to go with?
01:18I mean, I redshirted, I didn't play it down my first year,
01:22and then actually got the job three or four games
01:25into my redshirt freshman year.
01:28Went like 60-something percent, like I said.
01:29I messed up a lot before I really figured it out.
01:32Brought in a guy on scholarship to take my place,
01:34and somehow beat him out, somehow got good,
01:36and just kind of been climbing the ladder since.
01:38That's a way to do it.
01:39Now, you did go to Notre Dame, your senior, is that correct?
01:40I did.
01:41Tell me about going from Arkansas State,
01:43which, again, Division I program
01:44to the most recognizable college football program
01:47in the country.
01:48Yeah, I mean, I was, obviously,
01:49the portal has become what it is now,
01:50and I feel like I was like in stage one of the portal,
01:52you know, but I transferred there.
01:55I got to see college football at a major stage,
01:57which I didn't, you know, Arkansas State,
01:59obviously, like you said, Division I,
02:00but two different sides of the ball here,
02:02you know, completely different.
02:03So, you know, went through some things
02:05I had to figure out there, and, you know,
02:07self-actualization, and really, you know,
02:09believing that I could be a part of there,
02:11and, you know, had a good year, nothing crazy.
02:15Led me to being undrafted, and next thing you know,
02:17I'm in New Orleans, and, you know,
02:18we're finished with two years of my NFL career,
02:20so it's been a wild ride.
