00:00The price of rice went down after the Department of Agriculture declared a food security emergency.
00:06This is what Christian Bascones has to say.
00:08Angela is happy that there will be cheaper rice that they can buy every day.
00:16With their 50 pesos budget, they can only buy 1 kilo of rice every day.
00:22It's cheaper, even if it's not that delicious, as long as it's cheap.
00:27Aris is happy because they can buy cheap rice.
00:31It's cheaper if you have 35 pesos.
00:34That's where you can save money because it's expensive to buy now.
00:39Margie is confident that there are rice owners in Tandangsora Public Market
00:43who won't be able to reduce their customers if they sell cheaper rice.
00:49It's better to have cheap rice because some people can't afford such a high price.
00:56It's okay to have 35 pesos, but it's better to have delicious rice, like 55 pesos.
01:04It's better for the customer.
01:06After the NFA declared a food security emergency on rice yesterday,
01:10Filipinos will continue to feel the price of cheap rice.
01:14This declaration also aims to influence the price in the market.
01:19The National Food Authority is now consulting all participating LGUs across the country
01:24so that the allocation can be sent to them immediately.
01:28The NFA has already sent a communication to the LGUs.
01:33We sent a letter inviting them to participate.
01:38So far in NCR, including Cavite, because the NFA includes Cavite in NCR,
01:45we have already sent 53 letters and we are waiting for the reply of the LGUs
01:52so we can ascertain who are the interested to participate.
01:57150,000 metric tons of rice will be sent to local governments.
02:04The NFA will sell the rice to LGUs for 33 pesos per kilo.
02:10And the LGUs can sell it to those who can afford it for up to 35 pesos.
02:16The NFA expects that the sale will start next week.
02:21Department of Agriculture Assistant Secretary Engineer Arnel De Mesa made it clear
02:26that the NFA did not declare a food security emergency on rice
02:30because of the lack of stocks, but because of the high prices in the markets.
02:36The food security emergency is only because of the extraordinary increase in the price of rice
02:46and not because of the lack of rice supply in our country
02:51that the Republic Act 12078 or the amendment to the rice tariffication law.
02:57According to the NFA, compared to the first recommendation of the National Price Coordinating Council
03:02of 38 pesos per kilo, it is lower.
03:05The agency explained that lowering the price is to have space for the storage of the NFA
03:11as a preparation for the upcoming harvest season.
03:15Meanwhile, the maximum suggested retail price of imported rice will be lowered to 55 pesos
03:21from the previous 58 pesos MSRP starting tomorrow, February 5.
03:26According to the Department of Agriculture, this step is important to reduce the food price inflation,
03:32particularly in basic commodities such as rice.
03:36The agency's target is to lower the MSRP of imported rice to 49 pesos in March
03:43while lowering the price of local rice in the markets.
03:46The premium rice is only playing at 49 pesos to 59 pesos per kilo,
03:52while the well-milled rice is at 47 pesos.
