00:00Sports radio 610 on the road. The drive is on the road. The drive is live here radio row here in New Orleans
00:07And it's been a good time, but it
00:11It's it's some serious business today Clint as Nick Kaley. Nick. Kaley is
00:17He's the guy he is the guy that the Houston
00:23Texans as the new OC as the new offensive coordinator and
00:27And
00:29If you're looking for the history of him currently he has been the Rams
00:33Tied in coach passing game coordinator for the last couple of years
00:37but he also has major ties with the New England Patriots as he was there for multiple years and
00:43Actually, they're crossing over with Nick Casario. So Casario is very familiar with
00:49Nick Kaley and and has had multiple
00:53Opportunities to become an OC or at least interest in becoming an OC. I know this year there was heavy interest
01:00In him by the Jets and he turned down the gig
01:03I know he was up for it multiple years ago when Belichick was still in New England
01:09But he decided to go with Matt Patricia and Joe judge
01:13So he was kind of up with their remain there that he moved out to to the Rams under Sean McVay
01:19How much of that is to you like a positive things as we've talked about it, I think he can potentially work what's
01:26What do you think are the best assets that Nick Kaley can bring as as he has been to multiple places?
01:33What are the best thing? What's the positive thing that you look at it?
01:36You're like, all right this this is why I think this could work
01:38Look, I think one thing that Nick Casario and D'Amico Ryan's do
01:43Most of the time and have done a really good job for of I think in in Houston is they hire great coaches, right?
01:49Let's get beyond the Kenny Kenny call a play. Can he manage a game?
01:52Can he can he manage the person out the million-dollar personalities in the building yada yada yada? He can coach football
01:58They hire really good coaches of the game on
02:02The grass put daily basis. I think he'll be really really good there
02:07Sean McVeigh wouldn't have him in his system if he weren't really good there
02:11Bill Belichick and up in New England would not have had him in the building up there in New England
02:15Had he not been a tremendous coach?
02:16So I don't doubt one bit that he is a tremendous football coach and on a day-to-day
02:20Minute-to-minute basis brings the energy and the know-how and the want to to to help players
02:28Get better day in day out
02:30Don't doubt that one bit the the the huge plus of bringing in an offensive coordinator that has similar
02:39Terminology and the offense not having to start over at ground zero and build up with CJ Stroud and this offense CJ
02:47Stroud knowing the terminology
02:49Should should be a big-time plus for this football team. And and look
02:55Other than that, I don't know
02:58The
02:59The jury's still out for me
03:01I'm imagining that there is an understanding an agreement that
03:06He's gonna have to work with some people that are already in the building
03:09He's gonna have to he's probably gonna have to work with whatever staff D'Amico Rinds and Nick Casario higher
03:15There's probably an understanding of that so you can say, you know, hey look that that's gonna
03:20That's gonna create he's obviously on the front end accepted this this a it's a collaborative effort to play offensive football in Houston
03:27So I'd imagine that's a plus. It's a it's a fit
03:30I don't like it
03:30but it's a fit for what they seem to want their offensive staff to look like and and and how they want their offensive staff to
03:36operate so
03:38You know that there's there are some pluses and you're right everybody on the text line. It's
03:43Saying oh, well, I can work. You're right. This guy's this guy has been he has been a a a hot candidate
03:50for the OC job in a few places
03:53I
03:54Would just like for him to maybe be an OC at the place he's at instead of us talk about how great of an OC
03:59he is coming up in that system and
04:02Maybe have called have at least had the title in in that system before
04:07You know, we we as the Texans make him our play caller
04:11I just that's but there are some positives and and and it's a wait-and-see for for who Nick Kaley is and what what what?
04:17What a strong suit is. Yeah, I think the big thing is he's been through multiple systems, right?
04:23He's been in New England's system there with under Josh McDaniels with with Tom where they had some success there
04:31And then obviously the Rams and who knows I again with that
04:34I wonder I wonder what offense he feels tied to I wondered like I do that and
04:40I'm guessing it will be what Sean and in this and this offense has been because it's clearly what
04:47The the Texans have been running. I don't think
04:50That would be a surprise if it moved towards more what the Patriots were doing when he was there for multiple years
04:55I would assume it would stay here, but I do think that he's been to multiple places is
05:00His help there you keep mentioning this
05:04And
05:06This is a guy we've talked about it that has turned down just turned down interviews at least at least one
05:11We know turned down the Jets interview for sure
05:16You think that you really think that
05:20the decision on the staff
05:24At the staff is
05:28coming from
05:29Not his call not his decision
05:32This is coming from above him that one of the big reasons that he was selected was absolutely that he would be worth
05:38You know really you don't think I think you look at that list of guys that were interviewed. I hate that
05:43There's not one guy on that list. It was gonna bring a staff with him
05:46Absolutely
05:48Really yeah, yeah that part that
05:52Like as I do to me is is is yes
05:55I you know you hope to have someone speak with the experience, but I was also hoping that since
06:00This guy is going to be the offensive coordinator
06:03This guy's gonna be calling plays the stuff's gonna fall on his head like it did Bobby
06:08That he would have some input on this thing
06:11Like and I know Lopez said that that is gonna be a big deal
06:15that is gonna be a strange thing of
06:19Yo
06:20Dry Johnson's gonna remain the quarterback coach like that's a strange thing a guy that went for the job
06:26who wanted the job who has been interviewing interviewing for coordinator jobs and
06:32And we know has a great relationship with the quarterback and CJ Stroud
06:37That he would remain there like that would that is a that is an interesting part of it
06:43If it is the case, I'm going to be watching that big time to see how many coaches remain here
06:49I got obviously we know there's gonna be a change at the at the offensive line coach
06:54We clearly understand that but that is my thing is how many guys are going to change from that because that's my
07:03Deal is we say work. I just
07:06Like a give give him the reins. Yeah, you don't think you don't think that at all is a car look
07:12I think it's a risk
07:14Hiring somebody that's never called plays never built a plan never managed
07:19These people a team an offensive unit
07:23I think that in itself is a risk to and just can he do that or can he not I mean that is that is an
07:30unbelievably difficult job
07:32right and
07:34This is an unbelievably critical time for the Houston Texans to make that jump
07:43To then on top of that task this guy or allow this guy to come in here and hire the whole offensive staff
07:50Yeah, no, I can't I can't I can't see that being the the plan
07:54I mean, I understand you come from but I'm just like damn like he's like he ain't gonna get I would be willing to bet you
08:01that the next time we hear from
08:05Probably Nick it will it will just be
08:09It'll just flow out man, we put this we put this offensive staff together with intent with a plan
08:18Yeah, we're gonna bet
08:20You think that you think that it's some sort of verbiage of that. We put this you got you got two choices
08:25Hey, man, we hired Nick and we let Nick bring his offensive staff in and and he's really or
08:31Hey, man, we put this thing together strategically for a reason. I
08:35Mean I'd probably lean towards the towards the ladder
08:41I'm pressing you jump in here. 7 1 3 5 7 2 4 6 10 those of you on YouTube and Twitch
08:46What are the biggest things that?
08:49are on the task list for
08:52For Nick for Nick Kaylee. What are the biggest things? Obviously, there's a change that was made
08:59Bobby Slowick was was was relieved of his duties after two years of being on the team
09:04Relieved of his duties after two years one really good year and then I think a very up-and-down year
09:10For Bobby Slowick with with injuries and poor play up front
09:15What are the things that Nick Kaylee has to come in and the expectation is?
09:21This is what you fix because I still think the Texans are in a we got a win right now and try to get past
09:28The divisional round and get to the AFC championship game and they clearly believe the coordinator held them back for that
09:35So what are the things 7 1 3 5 7 2 4 6 10 YouTube and to which you could jump in on this?
09:40What are the things that Nick Kaylee has to improve?
09:45Well, I mean, I think the one
09:47Vacancy or opening on the staff after he's hired is the answer to that the offensive line coach
09:52I mean you that that's that piece has to get right
09:55I mean that that piece has to whether we're talking about, you know
10:00The day-to-day technique mechanic type stuff or we're talking about overall the five guys working together and figuring out how to communicate
10:08Who's who's in charge is the center in charge is that there's a quarterback have some leeway and what he's calling
10:14That's got to get to me. That's that is absolutely football things X and O's that part of it has to get corrected. Hey
10:22I
10:25Go back to what I heard D'Amico Ryan say
10:28Shortly after the season. I don't remember which one of the pressers it was but one of his pressers he's asked about guys
10:34Wanting guys to take time off and when are they coming back?
10:36And he said look man after the Super Bowl, we got to get back and we got to get ready to work, right?
10:41That's got to include everybody and and I'll be honest with the first one in the building should should be the offensive line
10:46Shaq Mason, Laramie Tunsell Titus Howard juice grugs, Jarrett Patterson. They should be the first ones in the building
10:53They should be knocking on the door every morning to get in the building. Those guys have to get right
10:57Okay plan is if it if that was the big that's been the biggest issue the last two years if you're right
11:03I mean, I'll be honest. I don't know whose fault it is, right?
11:06I'm not a big blame guy here, but but I don't know whose fault it is that CJ Stroud was the most pressured
11:13Quarterback in the NFL one of the most pressured quarterbacks in the NFL
11:17but
11:18If you're an offensive lineman particularly one with the C on your chest and you got big money or you got it
11:23You're in here
11:23You're making ten plus million dollars a year and you've won a Super Bowl and you were brought in here to tighten things up and shore
11:28Up the middle offensive line or you were drafted in the second round and expected to come in here and play
11:32You should lose sleep at night. You should be embarrassed
11:36that your quarterback
11:38Was the most pressured and most hit quarterback in the NFL
11:42That shouldn't that shouldn't sit well now
11:44They ended they ended on a better note in terms of running the football so there I could see where you may sleep sleep a
11:49Little better at night, but when it's all said and done
11:52That group should lose sleep about the performance and the fact that their quarterback got the hell beat out of this year
11:59And maybe was one of the big things that led to the firing
12:03Of the there is truth to a
12:06You get another voice out there and you start doing you're willing to adjust and do some things differently
12:10Then that offensive line executes differently
12:12there are so many pieces that go into how poorly they protected the quarterback overall this year that it's
12:19It's bound to get better with change, right?
12:23I mean if you just change the o-line coach and it's a technique and mechanic thing it gets better
12:28assuming he's better right if you change the the play designer and the play caller and and
12:34They're doing they're protecting differently you would assume it gets better if you allow your quarterback the ability to
12:41redirect the pass protection
12:43Then it gets better
12:45right if your center is a better communicator, which I would expect you Scruggs and Jarrett Patterson to be the
12:51O-line of protection gets better. So I don't know how the protection doesn't get better and more consistent with this change
12:57But that's the number one priority. No doubt about it. Yeah as people are coming in
13:02That's what people are saying. Number one thing he needs to you know to fix think that's gonna be on his plate, right?
13:08Whether you like the higher or not
13:09What are the things has to improve a lot of people went there with the offensive line?
13:13Someone said they're happy that he his backgrounds at tight ends because that position
13:18Needs to improve and then somebody said
13:22We need to see the old CJ
13:24That's what someone text in and to me like I hear you say the offensive line and maybe those things go hand-in-hand
13:30I think that is his number one thing
13:34Like I think and I think it's ultimately what happened with Bobby Slowick, right? Everyone knows
13:44How at times the offensive line was but I think the biggest thing that got Bobby Slowick in trouble was
13:51Sophomore slump CJ Stroud ain't working CJ Stroud don't look the same to me. I just it's about quarterbacks like we
13:58We've seen it like, you know, there are there other team like it's Zack
14:03What's Zack Taylor's that whatever his name is in in Cincinnati?
14:07Yeah, he he ain't had he has not had great
14:13Offensive lines he'll it maybe cost him to get to a Super Bowl before but damn it. Yeah his quarterback
14:19It's it he'll he'll be in trouble when Joe Burrow falls apart. That's what it'll be in trouble
14:23So honestly, I do think the biggest thing was CJ Stroud looked like
14:28He was on a rocket ship to be like literally we heard people saying he made better than Josh Allen
14:35He's oh, I take him over. I take him over Lamar right now. I thought he would be in that conversation and
14:42now
14:44It may be a hard thing to say
14:46But Sam Darnold looked better than he did throughout the season
14:49Like there are there other people there are players that you wouldn't think and it and and hate to say it
14:55You come to a space where you talk yourself and say hey Bryce young closed the gap in
15:01between those guys from last year to year one and
15:03That kind of stuff to me is what crushed and hurt Bobby Slowick and that is what Kaylee has to fix
15:09Well, that's the offensive line or whatever. He has got to fix CJ Stroud
15:13I think that's his biggest his biggest thing to me is CJ Stroud has to look like
15:19The guy which was the reason they went out and got digs
15:24Got hunter, I mean that's that to me is the big one
15:27Yeah, look, there's there's no doubt about it. I mean that
15:31Fixing CJ Stroud is a two or three or four pronged approach
15:35I mean it's like you ain't fixing CJ Stroud if you don't fix the protection. Yes
15:38I mean, that's that's that's where it all starts. And so
15:41Yeah, I think I think big picture if you fix CJ Stroud of whatever all that entails and he's playing better
15:46And he's playing like he did his rookie year. Then you've you've obviously done some
15:52You've done some some great work
15:54I mean that but it's it's not just
15:57You know him it's it's there's a lot of work across the board at damn near every position on the offense. It has to be better
16:03yep, no, I agree a lot a lot too, but
16:06As we've said like to me
16:10The quarterback will fix a lot. Yep, and if CJ Stroud
16:14Starts to look like CJ Stroud
16:16It will fix a lot and then and I think a lot of people will will will look a lot different
16:21But I agree with you it starts with him
16:23He's got he's got to stop getting it and I wonder if they will they will give him better pieces up front
16:29That will help him be able to do that. So
16:32Nick Caley's got a lot a lot in front of him again
16:35Hopefully this is something that works for the Texans
16:39But those are those are the big things got protection CJ Stroud. Those are the things that have have to improve
16:44all right
