Surprisingly, research shows that we’re just as likely to avoid opening up to them about personal issues as we are to confide in them. A 2024 study from the *American Sociological Review* found that 38% of people actively avoid sharing sensitive topics with their closest connections—about the same percentage as those who do open up (37%).
