Two policemen were fined RM6,000 by the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court, Melaka on Friday (Jan 24) after they pleaded guilty to accepting a bribe of RM2,500.

59-year old sergeant Zaini Abu and 38-year old police corporal Zulfiza Abas admitted to have accepted the cash as an inducement for not taking action against 40-year-old Muhammad Azhar Khairuddin, for harbouring two illegal foreign workers.

00:29The offence was committed at the Jassintol area at 10.52pm on May 13 last year.
00:35Both accused, who were serving at the Jassin District Police Headquarters, were charged
00:39under Section 165 of the Penal Code and Section 34 of the same code.
00:45In mitigating for a lower fine, Defence Counsel Muhammad Ishaq Qari said that Sergeant Zaini
00:51was due to retire next year and was still supporting two children in school, while Police
00:56Corporal Zulfiza was caring for his aged parents, a child and a wife who suffers from
01:02epilepsy.
01:04The court then imposed a fine of 3,000 ringgit on each accused, with a five-month jail term
01:09if they failed to pay.
01:11Both accused paid the fines.
