AccuWeather Correspondent Leslie Hudson spoke with some of the locals in Houston, Texas, who shared their experience of a rare snow day blanketing the region on Jan. 21, with one man trying to sled.
Transcript
00:00Boy, the snow's coming down and I see some people out doing something they've probably
00:04been never able to do. Maybe a little sledding or tobogganing in Houston. Yes.
00:14Yeah. Yes. You know, breaking news that coffee is hot and wonderful here in downtown Houston.
00:20Erin, we're going to come over here and see if they're going to talk to us. Yeah,
00:23we're at a park now. We're a couple blocks away from our hotel. People are out. The sun is up
00:27or kind of up. It's cloudy, overcast, obviously. Hey, I wanted to talk to you. We're live on
00:31AccuWeather. I just saw you guys coming down the hill. This is your makeshift sled.
00:36Yeah. Tell me, tell me, who are you from here and what do you think of all this snow?
00:41Well, we love the snow. We're surprised we don't see it often in Houston. Yeah. And
00:49okay, so it's a nice little, yeah, snow's really coming down. There's a lot of snow and it's loose
00:56so it's not that great for sledding yet. Yeah. It's still exciting though, right? I see a lot
01:01of faces, happy faces. I see a lot of cameras. You guys are making, we call them a slushy
01:07lemonade out of lemons. I'll go with that. Yeah. It's nice to have the day off. I knew it was coming.
01:14You guys told us it was coming. Awesome. Thanks for that. All right. Well, it looked like you
01:18guys were having fun, so thanks for talking to us live on AccuWeather. You're welcome. Okay,
01:23stay with me guys. Okay, so guys, as you can see, you know, there are folks out and about.
01:27We shot some video earlier this morning in the downtown Houston area, well over two inches
01:33securely on the ground at the time I shot this video, but there's definitely a three to four
01:38inches here in this park. So I think that record that they were anticipating has likely fallen.
01:44You know, we'll wait and later today to get an official word from the National Weather Service
01:48in terms of totals. If they got over four inches of snow here in downtown Houston, that was going
01:54to be a second record. The biggest record was 20 inches in the 1800s, but this will certainly be
02:01a historic snow event they have not seen since 1960 of this magnitude. And again, we have to
02:06remind everybody that we're in Houston, Texas. We're not in the Midwest. We're not in the Northeast.
02:10We are in a Gulf Coast state that it's typically very moderate climate. So this has definitely been
02:16unusual for the folks out here. We've seen a couple of dogs. You maybe can see that one dog
02:20over my shoulder did its business very quickly. Smart pooch. And they're probably going to be
02:26headed back in. We don't see people staying out here too long. You know, if you're not used to
02:29this stuff, and I'm certainly not, you know, you take your pictures and and then you get back into
02:34the warmth. But it is beautiful to see this snow out here. Hopefully the city is doing okay. We
02:39know it's completely been closed down because of the transportation issues and likely to see
02:44this snow for a few more hours reporting live from downtown Houston. I'm Leslie Hudson back to
02:48you. Leslie, that was amazing. Great to get everyone's perspective. They're seeing the dogs
02:53seeing people who maybe just go out for a few minutes and then okay, time to go back inside.
02:56So we appreciate the energetic update there. Although we know certainly the snow already
03:00causing a lot of problems, but in happy to see the people enjoying it.
