00:00Thank you, Namaskaram.
00:27On the 11th day of Saptak, Kathak dance was performed for the first time.
00:33Ishira Parikh, a famous artist, performed with her.
00:37Ishira, first of all, what is Kathak?
00:42Please tell us about Kathak.
00:44Kathak is a classical dance.
00:48There are 7-8 classical dances in India.
00:53Kathak is the only dance that originates from North India.
00:58The word Kathak means,
01:01If you say Katha, you say Kathak.
01:04Kathak is the one who tells a story.
01:06So basically, it originated from Kathavachan.
01:10And that too in North India.
01:13In earlier times, there were no means of communication or entertainment.
01:19There were only storytellers.
01:21And the storytellers would tell different stories.
01:24And while telling the story, they would develop different facial expressions.
01:34And that is how Kathak dance originated.
01:40Ishira, what did you ask for in the first Satra, and what was its story?
01:46Every classical dance has a special way of presenting it.
01:53Kathak dance has a traditional way of presenting it.
02:01That is how we presented Kathak today.
02:05In the beginning, we performed a piece called Anantnath.
02:08It was a celestial orchestra.
02:12The gods and goddesses who are associated with music and dance,
02:19Imagine that they are dancing together.
02:27Shiva's Damru, Krishna's Basuri, Sharda's Veena, and Ganesha's Chaturanga Swarupa.
02:36We performed a piece like that.
02:39And then we performed three dances.
02:42There are different types of dances in the Shastra.
02:45We performed three dances out of the sixteen popular dances.
02:52In the beginning, Kathak was performed in a temple.
02:57And then it went to the royal court.
02:59So, how did it come to Gujarat?
03:02In Gujarat, the cultural ethos of Gujarat is more similar to that of North and Central India.
03:17So, the tradition of Kathak, the tradition of Kathak dance,
03:21We can easily adopt it.
03:25Even in Bhavai, we can see many movements of Kathak.
03:35We can also see the words of Kathak.
03:37We cannot say that Kathak is the dance of Gujarat.
03:41But Gujarat has easily adopted it.
03:45Because culturally, it is very close to us.
03:49Whether it is in terms of language, movement, or dance.
03:56So, it is very similar to the dance of Gujarat,
04:00And to the cultural ethos of Gujarat.
04:04Kathak dances are performed in Lucknow, Jaipur, and Banaras.
04:07Which dances are popular in Gujarat?
04:09And what do the young people come to learn?
04:12We are the ones who perform the dance.
04:15So, it is the dance of Lucknow.
04:18Our Guru has learnt it from the Gurus of Lucknow.
04:21But the dance of Lucknow and Jaipur are both popular in Gujarat.
04:29So, we cannot say that it is the dance of the same house.
04:35But it is true that
04:38These days, the demarcation of the house has also been fused.
04:43Some Jaipur dancers incorporate the dance of Kathak and Lucknow.
04:50And some dance of Lucknow incorporate the dance of Jaipur.
04:55So, the demarcation has been reduced.
