00:00For decades, Filipinos have been lamenting the passing of Jesus Nazareno to the Pope.
00:07This deep devotion that is being spread by millions of people.
00:12History also says that our Father Jesus Nazareno of Intramuros started from the very beginning.
00:21Mark Salazar has the story.
00:23Every year, millions of devotees show their deep devotion every feast of Jesus Nazareno of Quiapo.
00:35But did you know that there is an earlier image that says that the devotion to Nazareno started.
00:42This is our Father Jesus Nazareno of Intramuros, the leader of Jesus Nazareno of Quiapo.
00:51This is said to be the vivid image of the first Augustinian priests who came to the Philippines in the 16th century.
00:59The arrival of the Augustinian recollects who brought the original image of Nazareno to the Philippines in 1606.
01:06However, we do not have a record of when the original image was brought to the Philippines.
01:13They just assume that the recollects brought it.
01:17Unlike the Nazareno of Quiapo, which is facing forward, the Nazareno of Intramuros is facing sideways.
01:24The story of Jesus Nazareno of Intramuros is far-fetched.
01:28It is said that the image is adorned with diamonds on his regalia.
01:33There is gold and silver on his clothes and shoes.
01:36It's possible because the original Nazareno is the Nazareno of the wealthy,
01:41of the people of Intramuros, of the Spaniards, of the high society.
01:45In his house in the Church of St. Nicholas in Intramuros,
01:49the image of Jesus Nazareno is high and centered.
01:53Less than a hundred years in Intramuros,
01:56the devotion to Jesus Nazareno increased,
01:59not only to the wealthy, but also to the Filipino natives
02:03who lived outside the walled city of Intramuros.
02:07The second image was needed for the increase of devotees.
02:11At that time, the walled city of Intramuros had a time to open and a time to close.
02:18The Filipinos were outside.
02:20That's why they couldn't enter.
02:22The bishop demanded to put a second image there in Quiapo
02:28so that people now have access.
02:31That's why there are two Nazarenos now.
02:34The handsome Nazareno for the wealthy
02:37and the black Nazareno for the natives.
02:40In the first part of the 17th century,
02:43it is said that the second Jesus Nazareno came from Mexico.
02:47And according to the historical records of the Order of the Augustinian Recollect,
02:51between 1767 to 1787,
02:55the second image was transferred from Intramuros to Quiapo
02:59to become the Nazareno of the masses.
03:02This transfer is repeated every year through translation.
03:08The image of Quiapo is now the center of devotion to Jesus Nazareno.
03:14But when the Second World War came,
03:18along with the massacres,
03:20the Nazareno of Intramuros fell.
03:23And the only thing left here is this historical marker.
03:28It shows how World War II ended the story of the first Nazareno.
03:33When the Americans bombed, everything was destroyed.
03:36Nothing was seen, nothing was taken.
03:38That was February 1945.
03:40The church was destroyed.
03:42The Confradia was gone.
03:44Now they are all transferred to Quiapo.
03:47The so-called Nazareno of the masses in Quiapo
03:50became more tangible
03:52and expanded the devotion to our Father Jesus Nazareno.
