Review of Golden Hooves 'regenerative' cheese
Transcript
00:00Today I'm doing a taste test on two cheddar cheeses have been sent to me by
00:05Golden Hooves. Now these are cropping up now in 14 booth stores across Lancashire,
00:12Cheshire, Cumbria and Yorkshire and what makes them special is that they're made
00:18with regenerative farming and essentially that means that the farmers
00:25are doing more so they're increasing biodiversity and reducing emissions the
00:31animals are kept to a very high standard of welfare and there's things like
00:35countryside stewards stewardship sorry and future food security going into the
00:42manufacturing process that will appeal to a lot of people but what will appear
00:47more is how these cheese cheeses taste so let's have a go okay so these are the
00:53cheeses that I've been sent to try by Golden Hooves we've got mature cheddar
00:57and a vintage cheddar the difference between mature and vintage I'm not sure
01:03on but the mature one here says rounded and rugged and then we have complex and
01:11crumbly and you can see that the vintage cheddar there has won a couple of taste
01:17awards British cheese award gold and great taste star so yeah I'm gonna open
01:25both of them and and let you know what I think okay so first of all I would just
01:30like to say that quite like the packaging anyway the taste of it I have
01:35just just taken a little piece of this mature cheddar rounded and rugged don't
01:41really know what that's meant to mean and what I can tell you is it tastes
01:46exactly like a cheddar I hate to say it but it's quite unremarkable if you're in
01:52the market for a mature cheddar there's quite a few of them around and this does
01:57what it says on the tin it's perfectly lovely and it will do you a great job if
02:03you want a mature cheddar but there's nothing remarkable about it and it's
02:09it's very comparable with other leading brands that are out there but if you
02:14want to be extra responsible and you want this regenerative farming then this
02:19is going to be a good choice for you right I'll move on to the vintage because
02:25I want to know what the difference is between vintage and mature so right here
02:28we go with the vintage portion there let's have a go okay so that one to me
02:40tastes milder than the mature it's not it says it's crumbly and I was worried
02:47about that to me that's not crumbly at all but as I say I am NOT a cheese
02:53expert I am just Jo blogs crumbly to me is kind of like your crumbly Lancashire
03:01or it falls apart I mean I don't know if you can see that but that doesn't have
03:07that crumbly texture it wasn't falling apart you have to you know what I mean
03:15there's nothing falling apart here taste-wise complex okay I'll take your
03:22word for it it's like again it's perfectly pleasant there is nothing
03:25wrong with this cheese at all and I'm sure that the credentials behind the way
03:31it's made are fantastic it's a cheddar and you know it struggles in terms of
03:40being Wowie because it's not mixed with anything you know there's no fruit in
03:44there there's no spices or herbs or anything fancy going on if you want some
03:51good honest cheddar cheese yeah great absolutely fantastic but does it stand
03:58out to me for the taste no
