00:00Hi there. Following a brief colder interlude at the weekend at the start of Monday, we're
00:06back to, well, a traditional British Christmas. As far as the weather is concerned, that means
00:13mild and gloomy. And you can see all this very mild air arriving now across the country
00:18from the west. Atlantic-dominated weather around the top of an area of high pressure.
00:23And as the initial warm front goes through, a spell of rain, mostly light and patchy,
00:28rain and drizzle. But once that's moved into the North Sea, it dries up a little away from
00:33western hills and coasts overnight. However, we're left with a legacy of low cloud, mist,
00:40hill fog as well, and very mild air in place. And that means that in some spots, temperatures
00:45will actually rise through the night, so that by dawn on Christmas Eve, we're looking at
00:508 to 12 Celsius, so widely up and down the country.
00:54Always the possibility of one or two cloud breaks, mostly to the east of higher ground,
00:58so parts of the Midlands, East Wales, the south-east, eastern Scotland, north-east England,
01:03some brighter interludes. But on the whole, it's just a grey, gloomy Christmas Eve with
01:08mist and hill fog in the west. Patchy, light rain and drizzle, particularly for western
01:13Scotland where that rain will be persistent, but also for the Pennines, the Welsh mountains
01:17for example, one or two spots for the south-west. Not as damp, I think, for England and Wales
01:22compared with how Monday has been, but it is another grey and gloomy afternoon for the
01:28vast majority.
01:29The winds are picking up across the north-west of Scotland, and that means the highest temperatures
01:34will be, I suspect, to the east or north-east of hills. East Wales, north-east England,
01:41north-east Scotland, 13, 14, perhaps 15 Celsius, so remarkably mild for the time of year and
01:49for Christmas Eve.
01:52It's also going to be mostly dry for the Midlands, the south and east of the UK, and it remains
01:58the case, as we're going to Christmas Day, that it's going to be largely settled because
02:02of high pressure extending its influence. The one exception, north-west Scotland, where
02:06it will continue to rain and the wind will continue to pick up. That wind coming from
02:10the south-west will bring the remarkably mild airflow and temperatures on Christmas morning,
02:1710, 11, perhaps 12 Celsius, warmer spot likely to be north-east Scotland. Eight or nine further
02:24south, and with lighter winds in the south, we won't get so much of a fern effect, won't
02:28get so much of a very mild wind, and as a result, where we do get some clearer spells,
02:34it might be a little colder, but on the whole, it is a mild Christmas Day. Some brightness
02:40forming here and there, mostly to the east, but again, the cloudy theme continues. Damp
02:46in the north-west and over some western hills, continuing to be windy in the north-west
02:51of Scotland, but staying mild. Not quite as mild as Christmas Eve, nevertheless, it is
02:56going to be widely double figures, 11, 12 Celsius up and down the country. Boxing Day
03:02is looking very similar, then it gradually turns colder into the weekend and next week,
03:07but also more unsettled. Bye-bye.
