20 December - National weather forecast presented by Honor Criswick
Transcript
00:00Hello there, good morning. Only a few more days until the big day, but quite a lot of
00:04unsettled weather for the run up to Christmas, so it is worth keeping an eye on our website
00:09for any warnings as we head into the weekend. For today though, there should be lots of
00:13dry and bright weather across central and southern England, a few showers around western
00:17coasts at times, but a change is on its way as we start to see some outbreaks of rain
00:21slowly sink their way towards the southeast. This could be quite persistent, if not rather
00:25heavy at times too. Largely clearer to the north of this though, plenty of blustery showers
00:30feeding in around coasts of north-west Scotland, western parts of Northern Ireland, a few feeding
00:35inland at times and they could be heavy with some hail, perhaps some winteriness across
00:39hills over Scotland too. And temperatures largely a degree or two higher compared to
00:44Thursday, but it is going to be feeling chilly, particularly in those rather brisk north-westerly
00:49winds. Then through into the evening, we eventually say goodbye to the cloud and rain from the
00:54southeast. It turns settled for a time, but not for long as we then start to see further
00:59outbreaks of rain move their way in from the west. Once again, these could be quite persistent
01:03and heavy at times and it is going to turn rather blustery just to the north-west through
01:07the early hours of Saturday too. Once again, it is a fairly chilly night on offer, particularly
01:12in those brisk winds. Now as we head into the weekend, we've got an area of low pressure
01:18just to the north of the country that's sweeping in some frontal systems, leading us to a fairly
01:23unsettled weekend. And also it's creating a good squeeze in the Isle of Bars, so some
01:26very strong winds at times, particularly across the north-west into Saturday and then more
01:31widespread across western coasts as we head into Sunday. But it is going to be largely
01:35breezy for all, particularly around those north-western areas where there is a risk
01:38of seeing some gales, if not some severe gales at times. We do have multiple yellow wind
01:43warnings issued, so if you are travelling around for the Christmas period, it is worth
01:47keeping an eye on those. And it's going to be an unsettled start to the weekend too.
01:51Spells of rain once again slowly sinking their way towards the south-east, could be
01:55heavy and persistent at times. They are remaining largely cloudy and damp across the south by
01:59the time we reach the afternoon. Once again, clearer to the north of this, but plenty of
02:03blustery showers. Once again, these heavy at times, falling as snow, mainly across hills
02:08in Scotland, but we may even see some wintry flurries to lower levels too. And these showers
02:12sometimes merging to bring some longer and heavy persistent spells of rain at times too,
02:17with that yellow wind warning out and through into Saturday and some weather warnings into
02:21Sunday too. So, some very blustery conditions amongst these showers also. And it is turning
02:26largely mild for a time, particularly across the south where we see above average temperatures.
02:31But once again, it is going to be unsettled with plenty of blustery showers in the far
02:35north-west. So, heading into the weekend, it is going to be unsettled. We are expecting
02:40some very strong winds at times. Multiple Met Office wind warnings already in force
02:44for the weekend. So, do keep an eye on those if you are travelling around for the Christmas
02:48period into the weekend, as there is likely to be some disruption, particularly to travel.
02:53Otherwise, if you want more details on this weekend's weather, you can catch Aidan's video
02:58on YouTube. Otherwise, that's it from me. Bye-bye.
