00:00We'll be right back with more on the week 15 NFL Sunday slate
00:07significant games, important injuries to detail for you live
00:12right here on this Monday on the early line. That means the
00:15pro football doc. Doctor David Chow joins us bright and early
00:19to look back on a Sunday. Doctor Chow as always, we
00:23appreciate the time. Thank you for being here. Happy to be
00:27here. Lots of injuries to talk about, but thankfully most of
00:30them are not. Oh my God or season ending stuff. Well,
00:36Doctor Chow did feel like an oh my God moment about eight
00:39minutes remaining in regulation yesterday between the Browns
00:43and the Chiefs is Patrick Mahomes limped off the field
00:46with what the Chiefs are calling a high ankle sprain. Of
00:50course, that will get a ton of conversation and focus this
00:54week around the National Football League. Doctor Chow
00:56you and your team at Sports Injury Central when you saw the
01:00play and the hit yesterday in the fourth quarter in the land.
01:03What was your initial evaluation? What do you make of
01:06what Mahomes Andy Reed and the Chiefs have said after we
01:11looked at it and thought it was a right high ankle sprain and
01:15we actually felt that he could return to the game, but Andy
01:19Reed was being smart and not putting him back in and they've
01:24said that afterwards. Now, I get it in the vernacular. Now
01:29we make a big deal out of high ankle sprains versus low ankle
01:32sprains, but just to remind viewers Patrick Mahomes has
01:37played through a very similar high ankle sprain before
01:40remember back to the 2022 divisional playoffs versus
01:45Jacksonville. It happened in the first half and then the world
01:49went nutso when he got sent into the locker room for
01:52precautionary x-rays. Then he returned to the sideline and he
01:56did not immediately re-enter the game and the backup finished
02:01the drive and even took the kneel down after that. And I'm
02:05saying live, I was saying live in my halftime injury chat on
02:08at Pro Football Doc, Patrick Mahomes is coming back to this
02:12game, even though he's got the high ankle sprain. He did, they
02:15won in the second half. Then after the game, Ian Rappaport
02:18said he's got a high ankle sprain and everyone says he's
02:20out for the rest of the playoffs. I'm like, no, he's
02:22going to play through. He's going to change his game, change
02:25his arm angle, not push off. And guess what? He beat the Eagles
02:30that year in the Super Bowl, won the conference and beat the
02:33Eagles. He's done this before. Will it affect him? Yes, he's
02:37able to modify his game. If he were a running back, this would
02:40be a much bigger deal. He's able to adapt. Now with all that
02:44being said, he may miss the next game or two because it's
02:49a different situation. It's not must win for the Chiefs. They
02:53play two games in the next 10 days, including on Christmas and
02:58this Saturday. They're tough opponents, the Texans and the
03:02Steelers, but I think it's too early to tell whether he will
03:06play or not, but don't worry in the infamous words of
03:11Schwarzenegger, he'll be back. It's just a matter of when and
03:14it'll be back well ahead of the playoffs. Yeah, we also saw
03:18him dock in the Super Bowl, get re-injured before halftime and
03:21come back in the second half and play very well, beating the
03:23Eagles in that Super Bowl. We watched primetime football last
03:26night, Seattle Doc trying to win the NFC West, but we saw
03:29Gino Smith take a shot to the leg and did not return. What's
03:32the prognosis for Gino Smith? What did you see? Yeah, he got
03:36hit as he jumped up in the air and he got hit on the back of
03:41the shin, right shin and calf. The good news is and his knee
03:46got folded up. The good news is structurally, we didn't see
03:49anything and sometimes what we don't see is better news than
03:53what we do see and we didn't see anything there. Mike McDonald
03:56has said there's no structural damage now. I think it was not
04:00impossible that he could return to the game. Obviously, he was
04:03hobbled. So I put that right now unless the MRI surprises us
04:07with something like meniscus, which technically I guess is
04:10structural, but it's not a ligament. The ligaments are fine.
04:14Don't see this as significant right now. And let's hope that
04:19the MRI confirms that. So, Dr. Chow, as we look at some of
04:23those contenders around the National Football League, the
04:26Detroit Lions yesterday in the highest scoring game of the
04:29season against Buffalo have their 11 game win streak snap.
04:33Detroit has dealt with a litany of injuries on the defensive
04:36side of the football this year and even more significant ones
04:41yesterday, including Aleem McNeil and one of their best
04:44defensive backs in Carleton Davis. After the game, Dan
04:47Campbell said both are season-ending. Do you agree with
04:51the head coach in the Motor City's assessment?
04:55Well, it's hard to argue with a coach that gets a medical
04:58report from doctors that examine players versus my looking at
05:02video and that's a pretty definitive statement. Looking at
05:06video of Aleem McNeil and then the jaw injury of Carleton
05:09Davis. My hope is he means regular season ending and not
05:15complete season ending, but it remains to be determined.
05:21Doc, we're going to get to some Monday night football action
05:23tonight. You know, the site's been doing very well with some
05:25of these at six score.com. I'm looking at Atlanta and Las
05:28Vegas. There is a big discrepancy tonight between health
05:32between Atlanta and Las Vegas. Can you share some of that
05:35insight tonight with us?
05:37Oh, there's no question. You know, the Raiders got lots of
05:40issues and Aiden O'Connell is listed as questionable, but he
05:43hasn't practiced all week, even though it's quote just a bone
05:47bruise. Don't see it likely that he plays. Max Crosby has been
05:51now shut down with surgery. They've got defensive issues at
05:55cornerback and other positions. So there's no question of that
05:59as the healthier side. But then again, you know, Kirk Cousins
06:03hasn't exactly been on a hot Street six score. The picks the
06:07guaranteed three-star picks have been seven and one and I believe
06:10the guys have another guaranteed pick for this Monday double
06:14header with a free pick guaranteed pick situation.
06:19And you better find that at six score.com. That is SIC score
06:23dot-com. Dr. Chow, when we look at the first game of the two
06:27tonight in Minneapolis out of the Vikings and the Bears stack
06:30up in terms of the field view.
06:33Well, you know, the Bears are actually relatively healthy
06:37defensively. The Vikings know Stefan Gilmore defensively
06:42overall. This is not a horrible health game, but the Bears have
06:47had so many changes that you know, the coaching staff and
06:51other things the Vikings, you know need to win right? The Packers
06:55are nipping at their heels and and they're in theory if they
06:59win they're tied with the Lions atop the NFC North. So it'll
07:03be an interesting matchup for the Vikings.
07:06Certainly will be 12 and 2 would be the mark for Minnesota if
07:10they can match that of Detroit with a victory over the Bears
07:14tonight, the pro football doc. Dr. David Chow as always we
07:17appreciate your time here on this Monday more on the early
07:21line comes up next.
