00:00You're from the South, so you've dominated on the high school level and the college level.
00:08And then now reaching these milestones in your career, how do you stay motivated and
00:13determined to keep going and pushing forward?
00:16I say this all the time, I have a little brother and a little sister, so that's what my siblings,
00:21my fiancée, and my family, and most importantly, I want to do it for myself.
00:25I'm the oldest in my family, but I also love football so much, I started when I was four,
00:29so I want to do it for myself, but along my journey, I also think about the people that's
00:34making me want to go get it even more.
00:38I don't know if you're religious or not, but have you ever thought about how the stars
00:42align, with Coach Bynum starting as a college coach at the very same time?
00:46How that works for you to be able to do what you're doing?
00:50Definitely God's plan, we say that all the time.
00:53We definitely believe in God, I definitely believe in God Almighty.
00:56I go to church every Sunday that I get off of in-season, but most of the time
01:00off-season I definitely go to church, so I'm definitely happy that I'm
01:04in the position I am.
01:06When did you first meet Coach Bryant?
01:08When did he reach out to you?
01:09I met Coach Bryant when I was a senior, I talked to him over at
01:12the hospital, so that's the first time I met him.
01:17And he reached out to you, because he was trying to recruit you?
01:20Nah, I don't think he reached out to me, I think I reached out to him because I wanted
01:23to see how he was feeling.
01:25Do you understand how Colorado fans really enjoyed your journey the past
01:29couple of years?
01:30And it brings back memories from 30 years ago, when the only
01:33high school patrol team winner in Colorado was Coach Bryant.
01:37Have you learned about Rashawn Sloan?
01:42Can you appreciate what he did here, and how really historic that was?
01:47Definitely could appreciate it, I don't know as much as most people
01:51know about him, but I know he got a trophy in there, that's the only one,
01:54so I'm not trying to make it a nothing.
01:56Would you rather have an award or a shoe?
02:01An award or a shoe.
02:03Ashton, the season you're having just in general, historically,
02:06for running backs, it's got to feel good getting mentioned in this
02:09April at this, that Derrick had to reach Reggie Bush's, I mean that's
02:12got to feel good.
02:13He's a great running back, he's physical, he doesn't seem to let
02:15anybody get in his way, he still goes out there and dominate.
02:17What's it been like interacting with him?
02:19It's nice, he's kind of quiet, most of the guys here,
02:23when we first met, it was kind of awkward,
02:25it's been some years against each other for a long time,
02:28so it's kind of awkward.
02:29I have to say, remember your brothers in terms of,
02:31can you imagine a dirty rush?
02:32I want to hear everything you're saying,
02:33but you've got to beat him, you've got to defy him.
02:35Yeah, I definitely know he's going to beat him,
02:37because I've been on both sides of the ball,
02:39so I definitely know he's going to beat him.
02:40Every hit, every type of wrist, you know,
02:43hopefully, he's been doing it for a long time,
02:47so I know what his body can take.
