00:00In the next episode
00:25Amazon, the Minister of the Environment and Energy Safety,
00:28Gilberto Picchetto Frattin,
00:30visited the Operations Innovation Lab in Vercelli,
00:33the first Amazon hub in Europe
00:35where innovative tools are being tested
00:37for the reduction and automation of packaging.
00:40The purpose of the visit
00:42is to highlight the importance of public-private collaboration
00:45for innovation in the sustainable packaging sector.
00:48The Operations Innovation Lab
00:50is equipped with advanced robotics
00:52and innovations based on artificial intelligence
00:55in order to reduce the ecological impact of packaging.
00:59Amazon is also testing bio-based bags
01:02made with plant materials
01:04that can be recycled to create new bags
01:07developed by the Italian company Novamont
01:09and part of the Versalis Group Eni.
01:11In 2024, Amazon has also introduced
01:14a new padded bag,
01:15equipped with a flexible coating
01:17capable of cushioning impacts,
01:19based 100% on paper.
01:21I believe that this is already a synergy
01:25because companies like Amazon,
01:28which are highly innovative,
01:30which are very modern,
01:32which do internal research for innovation
01:36continuously,
01:38I believe they have a future.
01:40Italy is at the center of innovation
01:42and Amazon's experimentation,
01:44as demonstrated by this Innovation Lab.
01:47Here in Vercelli, it is a global lab
01:49where a team of scientists and engineers
01:52from all over the world
01:54develop new technologies
01:56in the field of robotics, mechatronics,
01:58artificial intelligence, machine learning,
02:01automated packaging machines,
02:04but also new materials and packaging
02:06that are increasingly sustainable
02:08and therefore not only improve safety
02:11in the world of work,
02:12but also improve our environmental impact.
02:15A collaboration with an excellent player
02:18like Amazon,
02:19which reaches millions of people around the world,
02:22is an extraordinary opportunity for us
02:25to introduce solutions for packaging in Mater B
02:29and also a unique opportunity
02:31to test the effectiveness
02:34of multiple recycling solutions,
02:36in terms of resource regeneration
02:40and also certified environmental performance.
02:43At the visit and at the conference that followed,
02:46some of the main players in the sector
02:48and partners of Amazon were also present,
02:50in addition to Novamont, Comieco
02:52and the Networking Federation,
02:54the Netcom consortium, Grifal and EIS,
02:57European Institute of Innovation for Sustainability,
03:00which highlighted the importance
03:01of public-private dialogue
03:03to achieve European decarbonization goals,
03:06also through innovation in the packaging sector.
03:09In 2023, the only environmental contribution
03:12to CONAI has been equal to 718 million euros,
03:15which means that every euro of environmental contribution
03:18has a multiplier equal to 4.6
03:20in terms of value generated for the Italian economy.
03:23This highlights how the use of second-use materials
03:26in replacement of raw materials
03:28has significant repercussions
03:30on the Italian economic system.
03:32This is the main data
03:33emerged from the new Sustainability Relationship
03:35of the National Consortium of Packaging, CONAI,
03:38which, like every year,
03:39quantifies the environmental economic benefits
03:41of packaging in Italy.
03:43The circular economy will be the founding actor
03:48of the West and of the whole world.
03:53Today we have a circulation index of 18%.
03:58In Europe we are in second place,
04:00but considering the objectives we have
04:03at the general level,
04:04considering the world of packaging,
04:06packaging in Italy,
04:07packaging waste in Italy,
04:08today we have 8% of the total waste,
04:11but we do a lot,
04:12because 75% is already recycled,
04:16and this means raw material that is saved.
04:19What is demonstrated in this
04:21Integrated Sustainability Relationship
04:23is precisely the economic, social and environmental value
04:26of the circular economy,
04:28although limited to a sector of packaging waste,
04:32which is smaller than others.
04:33So the invitation to what we should do,
04:35like all of us,
04:36is to focus on increasing
04:38the circularity of our economy.
04:40There is still a lot to do in many sectors.
04:43CONAI's new Sustainability Relationship
04:46clearly describes how the circular economy,
04:48applied to the correct management of packaging,
04:50represents a value for the entire national economy.
04:53When we talk about the circular economy
04:55and when we talk about sustainability,
04:57our main task, as CONAI,
05:00is precisely to guarantee the correct achievement
05:03of environmental goals,
05:05and therefore of the positive outcomes
05:08for the environment,
05:09by correctly managing,
05:11through reuse and recycling,
05:13the packaging used by our companies
05:16and by all of us in our daily lives.
05:18Well, we were able to calculate
05:21that in just 2023,
05:23thanks to the reuse and recycling of used packaging,
05:26it was possible to save a huge amount of CO2,
05:30equal to what would be consumed
05:33to make 8,000 flights around the world.
