00:00Here's a possibility, because a lot of times when things don't go well in a sports season,
00:06it does actually end up as a blessing in disguise.
00:09How did the 49ers get Nick Bosa?
00:11They got Nick Bosa because Jimmy Garoppolo got hurt.
00:13He torn ACL, and so they stunk, and they ended up getting Nick Bosa.
00:17Now, could something like that happen this year?
00:20I don't know.
00:21Probably not.
00:22I don't think the Niners are going to get the number two pick in the draft.
00:24But here's what is very possible.
00:26What if the 49ers do really still like Brock Purdy, and they see all kinds of extra stuff
00:35to the negative happening around the franchise this year?
00:39From yes, the death of three babies, to contractual stuff, to massive injury, all of the things
00:46they've dealt with.
00:48Excuses?
00:49No.
00:50Just real things that they've been dealing with.
00:51What if that leads to Brock Purdy making $35 million instead of $60 million?
01:00I don't think that it's going to be that low, but the point is still the same.
01:03What if it's $42 million?
01:04It doesn't even matter what it is.
01:06For me, the bigger thing is, do you still believe that he is the guy?
01:11All those other things that have happened around him, you weigh that on his performance.
01:15Like yesterday, you don't look at a game in those conditions and automatically think that
01:19he should be throwing for 350 in three touchdowns.
01:22It wasn't conducive to being able to throw the ball in those conditions.
01:25So much like the season in totality, you look at everything that's happened.
01:29You lose Brandon Iuke, your highest paid receiver.
01:33You don't have your running back other than what, two and a half games he ends up playing
01:37this year, McCaffrey.
01:38So all these things, you lose your left tackle, blah, blah, blah.
01:42You weigh it.
01:43I don't think that you're going to be able to whittle it down to 30, but knowing that
01:47you don't have to pay him in the offseason tells me that they can probably get it done
01:50for less than what the market normally would dictate.
01:54There's exactly the point that I think we got to highlight today.
01:59They don't have to pay him this offseason.
02:03I think that's touchy.
02:06I think it's tricky.
02:07They don't have to.
02:10They do not have to.
02:12If I'm Brock Purdy, I look at a situation like that and I acknowledge that that is a
02:18major leverage piece in the favor of the 49ers.
02:23There's two leverage pieces here.
02:25One, people will say, oh, well then Brock will hold out.
02:28Maybe.
02:29Maybe Brock will hold out because his game checks next year stand to be like, I don't
02:33know, 50 or 60 grand.
02:35So like, sure, I'll give that up so that I can fight for the bigger contract.
02:39That's a leverage piece for Purdy.
02:41But the leverage piece for the 49ers is they're going to walk up to Brock Purdy and go, sir,
02:46would you like to be rich for the rest of your life or would you like to engage in a
02:52standoff with Kyle Shanahan as your coach, which is already proven to be good for quarterbacks?
02:58Do you want to have a standoff or do you want to be a rich man for the rest of your life
03:04because you haven't been paid a whole lot so far in your young career?
03:09Therefore, this is what we're offering.
03:12Do you take it?
03:13Do you take it?
03:14That is a leverage piece that is in the favor of the 49ers for that conversation next offseason.
03:19Yeah, they don't even have to speak about it or use it because they know it and he knows
03:23it too.
03:24And the ideal would be Brock Purdy plays great.
03:27You win the Super Bowl.
03:29Then they're happy to pay him the biggest contract in NFL history.
03:32But the other side of it is you go five and seven and your turnovers are up.
03:37Your struggles are up.
03:38It looks like you're a little bit more tentative with the ball than you were last year, partly
03:43because your team is now last in route separation.
03:47And I misspoke during the crossover.
03:49They were 10th last year and now they're 32nd.
03:52And that's a big thing.
03:54And you know, you've got a quarterback who's already feeling a little fidgety back there
03:58because the pocket's breaking down and your receivers aren't open.
04:02You've got a rookie in Ricky Pearsall who's quietly gone into the background on offense,
04:07a tight end who has to stay in and block a lot because you're not getting it done with
04:12your five offensive linemen.
04:13So oh, and your best pass catching running back has played 10 quarters.
04:17So all these things together.
04:19If I'm sitting in Brock's shoes, I'm not going to tell the Niners this, but anything north
04:24of 40 million a year, I'm signing.
04:26Well, I'd also say this.
04:28It's interesting and I get why.
04:30I understand the way we look at football and it starts with the quarterbacks.
04:34You come off of this two game road trip to Green Bay and Buffalo.
04:37You lose both games.
04:38You give up 73 points and the running backs are firing through gaping holes on every play.
04:46Now, what do we know about the offense?
04:48One game was played in a blizzard.
04:50The other one was played without your quarterback entirely.
04:53And we come out of those two games going, this offense.
04:58You can't tell me a thing about the offense.
05:01For the last two weeks.
05:02When you compare it to what the defense is doing now, I know they've been hampered by
05:06injury too, obviously.
05:09But if you want to talk about which side has shown worse the last two weeks, there's not
05:14even close.
05:15Oh yeah.
05:16It's not even close.
05:18I don't know how you assess the offense when one game's in a blizzard and the other one
05:22has a backup QB.
05:23Well, I don't, I don't know.
05:25I don't know how I look at the blizzard and I look at an offense that had chances at times
05:31and you know, you had your fullback fumble at the one, you had your quarterback unable
05:35to corral the ball when he's trying to throw it.
05:37And you know, the other team didn't really have those problems, even though this was
05:40the first snow of the year in Buffalo, they haven't played a snow game.
05:45It's not like they always play in snow, but their quarterback is more suited to it than
05:49the Niner quarterback and the Niner team.
05:52By the time you got to that second half, it looked like they were ready to get on the
05:56bus.
05:57No doubt.
05:58No.
05:59I don't think they're suited for any scenario than the Niner quarterback.
06:01They have a better quarterback than the 49ers do.
06:04By the way, before we continue with the phones, our last caller referred to the Niners dealing
06:08with the tragedies, Charverius Ward and the news today about Trent Williams and his wife
06:15unfortunately losing twins.
06:17One of them lost during the pregnancy months ago and then lost the other one to disease.
06:24And we got that.
06:25I don't know exactly what day this all happened, but we got the news now.
06:29And so Kyle Shanahan did discuss the 49ers dealing with tragedy this year.
06:34I don't think it's much different in the business world either.
06:37People go through a lot of stuff and whatever their line of work is, they just have a responsibility
06:42to do.
06:43So we all understand that fully and how hard it can be on someone.
06:46And I do think in a sports atmosphere and a team atmosphere, kind of like what I was
06:50saying earlier, it's nice for those guys to, you know, to have a team and stuff they can
06:54be around and not feel as alone.
06:57But, you know, that's not going to, you know, no one's going to judge your team off of that.
07:00They're going to judge it off of wins and losses.
07:02And those games come once a week and you got to put your plan together.
07:06You got to practice as hard as you can and you got to get 48 guys out there on the field
07:09in uniform that are going to help you win.
07:11And like with injuries, you can't always count on everybody, whether it's an injury or whether
07:16it's something tragic that happened, you know, people are going to go through some stuff.
07:19And when that happens, we got to have another guy step it up.
07:21Okay.
07:22All right.
07:23One more on this.
07:24This one is specific to Trent Williams and the Williams family and their stillborn son.
07:30This from Kyle Shanahan today.
07:31I think he did a little bit of that last week, you know, something that happened that last
07:35week and, you know, he was there at the hospital with her and got to meet him and say bye.
07:44And then he had a cremate him on Friday.
07:45So he's been dealing with that and he's working through it.
07:48But we're all just trying to be here for him, do it all.
07:51I don't know.
07:52That change anybody's thought on all this.
07:54Well, yeah, it should give you perspective, great perspective.
07:57And a lot of times we don't remember that these athletes are actual human beings and
08:03they're pro athletes for three hours a week on a Sunday.
08:06And I know they practice and lift and all the rest of it.
08:08But from the performative aspect, we see that and we judge them on that.
08:12And we're right to do so.
08:13We're fans.
08:14It's what we do.
08:15But I do think for myself, I'd like to have a little bit more of a greater perspective.
08:19And like you said during the crossover, you only know what you know when you know it.
08:24And like the Andrew Wiggins thing, he was out, missed a bunch of time and we didn't
08:28really know.
08:29And so speculation ran wild and that was unfortunate.
08:32And this we don't know what's going on with any of these athletes in their real life.
08:37And then when you find this news out, it does give you a little bit of an idea of what he
08:41must be.
08:42And I can't imagine what he's going through when you're going through this.
08:46But I do know it's the most unimaginable, unspeakable thing that you could ever possibly
08:53get into your life.
08:54Yeah.
08:55I get what you're saying.
08:56And it's not unfair.
08:57Because you're right.
08:58We're all just fans.
08:59And so everybody can be super frustrated.
09:01I wonder though if there's any room or grace for just like, my God, the 49ers have gone
09:06through a lot this year.
09:07Yep.
09:08I mean, holy crap.
09:10Like for real.
09:11You know, you use a draft pick, get shot in the chest.
09:15Charverius Ward loses a child.
09:16Trent Williams loses two kids.
09:20You know, and then there's the stuff that's, you know, you got a little bit more fuzz on
09:24it.
09:25The contractual stuff, the injuries.
09:26My God.
09:27You know, I know nobody, nobody likes that.
09:29I know.
09:30Oh, excuses.
09:31I don't know.
09:32Can we acknowledge the Niners have been through a hell of a lot.
09:37Absolutely.
09:38At the same time, they, they could be eight and four right now through through it all.
09:43You know?
09:44Could be.
