00:00The Kuala Lumpur High Court says the seven-year imprisonment and two strokes of the rattan
00:05imposed on Moor MP Syed Sadiq Syed Abdul Rahman for criminal breach of trust and money laundering
00:10offences were not excessive.
00:13Justice Asar Abdul Hamid said that as a public figure and a role model for young people,
00:18Syed Sadiq should be held to a higher standard.
00:20Asar acknowledged this was Syed Sadiq's first offence and expressed hope that he would
00:24use the opportunity to reflect and rectify his actions.
00:27In his judgement, Asar highlighted that Syed Sadiq instructed two party members to withdraw
00:32one million ringgit from the Versatu Youth Funds without top leadership consent, raising
00:36concerns about bad faith.
00:39The court also found Syed Sadiq guilty of dishonestly transferring 120,000 ringgit of
00:43election fundraising funds into his personal account, deeming it an intentional misuse.
00:49Asar rejected Syed Sadiq's claims of ignorance regarding the withdrawals, saying it was unreasonable
00:53for him as a former youth chief to lack knowledge of such large transactions.
00:58On November 9th last year, Syed Sadiq was convicted on multiple counts of CBT, dishonest
01:03misappropriation and money laundering, and has lodged an appeal against the sentence.
