00:00Reducing the cost of private healthcare services is no simple task, the Association of Private
00:07Hospitals Malaysia said, citing the complicated relationship between profit and attracting
00:11investors.
00:12The association's president, Dr. Kuljit Singh, said private hospitals in Malaysia
00:17have profit margins of between 7% and 11% after tax, which are comparatively lower than
00:23many other healthcare sectors.
00:25Speaking to FMT, he said narrowing these margins further by reducing the cost of services is
00:30deemed unsustainable, potentially deterring investment in private healthcare.
00:34Kuljit said that in the long run, the lack of investors would be detrimental to the public
00:38healthcare system given that with lower investments in private healthcare, there would be fewer
00:43private hospitals to ease the strain on public hospitals.
00:46Last week, a group of MPs from PKR claimed that the rise in cost of private healthcare
00:51services was forcing those in the middle-income group to seek treatment at government hospitals
00:56and clinics.
00:57Kuljit said it would be better to enhance the public healthcare system instead, adding
01:01that it presented a more sustainable and equitable solution for the entire population.
