00:00A senator has urged critics of a new planned shift system for healthcare workers, which
00:06limits doctors and dentists in the public health service to 18 consecutive work hours,
00:11a chance before writing it off.
00:13Dr R. A. Linggeswaran, a former director of the Sungai Bakap Hospital in Penang, said
00:18the new system Waktu Berkerja Belainan, which is set to be implemented in six hospitals
00:24from February 1st, will provide healthcare workers a better quality of life.
00:29Under WBB, the work limit is lower than the current 24-33 straight hours from on-call duties.
00:36Linggeswaran said the issue has been taken out of context with the lower total on-call
00:42allowances the medical officers and specialists will receive under the new system.
00:47In singling out Dr Ahmad Saleh, he said the UMNO youth chief should have looked into the
00:52details of the initiative before attacking the health ministry, saying that his reaction
00:57appears to be a populist move.
00:59Linggeswaran said detractors failed to see that the current allowance for 24 hours on-call
01:04is RM220, while under the WBB, doctors will receive RM275 for 15 hours, which is the limit
01:13set for each active call.
01:15He said many medical negligence cases in public hospitals have been attributed to long working
01:21hours with little rest in between, and the WBB system aims to help reduce such occurrences.
