00:00In our sports banter, we will be joined live in the studio by the founder of Go4Gold, Mr. Jeremy Go.
00:13Sir, welcome to PTV Sports.
00:15Thank you, thank you. We're very happy to be here. Thank you for having us.
00:20Sir, for our teammates who are not familiar, can we take them back to the very start?
00:25How did you start in the sports industry and why did you choose to focus on supporting Filipino athletes?
00:34Well, I guess it started because I fell in love with sports, specifically cycling.
00:41So, maybe 10-15 years ago, I started doing mountain biking and I really liked it.
00:47So, of course, when you do sports, you meet the athletes.
00:52And then, I realized that while, of course, there's government support for our athletes,
01:01we know that it's not enough compared to the rich countries.
01:07So, of course, we tried to help them.
01:10First, a small thing.
01:12Up until 2017, I realized that we have an opportunity here to really help by establishing a sports program.
01:22So, through our company, Scratch It, which is a product of PCSO,
01:28we established a sports program called Go4Gold,
01:33specifically supporting, originally, our cyclists, our national team athletes, and then triathletes.
01:44Now, our program has grown to support other sports also.
01:49Those sports that maybe get overlooked, but the Philippines has a lot of chances.
01:57Sir, you mentioned resources.
02:00This is your main task for our athletes.
02:06Can you share with us your journey?
02:08How challenging is it to provide finance and resources and opportunities for the athletes we support?
02:17Of course, the main challenge is funding.
02:21It's never enough.
02:25You know, I always tell the athletes that,
02:28to be honest, a lot of people approach us, of course, asking for help.
02:35If we only have money, we'll help everyone.
02:38But, unfortunately, we don't.
02:40So, we have to pick and choose, which is always the hardest thing.
02:44You have to find the best athletes to give the resources to.
02:48And, unfortunately, that means that there are others you have to say no to.
02:53It's always heartbreaking to say no.
02:55Because, I believe every athlete has a passion.
02:59They really want to be the best that they can be.
03:02And, if we can help them, we try to.
03:07But, when you have to say no to someone, it really hurts.
03:13And, not just for them, but for us also.
03:17But, Sir Jeremino, you've mentioned before that you believe in the potentials of our Filipino cyclists here in the Philippines.
03:27How can we improve the level of their performance?
03:35So, number one, it starts with talent identification.
03:38I think that is the first thing.
03:41When we started, when I started this program, Selling the Coaches,
03:46I wanted to do things differently.
03:48I didn't want it to be just someone I already knew.
03:53It's like we're just recycling.
03:56And then, it's just them who are racing.
04:00I said, in order for us to be better as a nation, we need to change things.
04:07So, we really start by getting the grassroots athletes, the young athletes,
04:13and then giving them more exposure at a young age.
04:16Because our opponents in other countries, even when they're young, they're already competing.
04:25I'll give you Japan as an example.
04:27They have a very thriving high school, even grade school league.
04:31So, at a young age, the kids, they learn to race at a higher level.
04:35So, that's what we want.
04:38In fact, I'm so happy that there's a Batang Pinoy program, which I believe is still ongoing.
04:46The cycling, I think, ended yesterday.
04:48But there are other events still ongoing.
04:50Because it gives an opportunity for young athletes to compete against the very best of the Philippines.
04:58And you can really see who's improving.
05:01As you know, of course, a lot of our young athletes, we were talking about this earlier,
05:06come from poorer families.
05:09So, they can't really afford to...
05:11Like this time, the Batang Pinoy was in Puerto Princesa.
05:15So, imagine if they had to fund themselves, it would be almost impossible.
05:19With Batang Pinoy, at least they have support from the LGU,
05:23they can go there and they can race themselves.
05:25And for us, being part of the talent identification,
05:31we can see who are the kids who are really improving.
05:35And part of that is John Andre Aguasir, right?
05:38He just competed in the world last year.
05:41But this time, what are our plans for him?
05:44Because we're exposing him to international competitions,
05:48more international competitions.
05:50What are our reasons or what do we want to happen or development for him?
05:58Well, John is a good example of what our program is trying to do.
06:05I think he started when he was 16 years old.
06:08So, you spot a young talent, an extraordinary talent, you spot them.
06:14And then, you give them opportunity to race abroad.
06:17So that, of course, first, training.
06:20You need to ensure that...
06:22Of course, when we met him, he was already a very talented rider.
06:25But we know that there are certain things that he needs to improve on.
06:29So, we spent some time improving those aspects of his craft, of his sport.
06:35And then, we had him race abroad.
06:41I think his first race was in Thailand.
06:44Up until the point that we were comfortable.
06:47Okay, let's go to the World's.
06:49We went to Japan, we went to the World's.
06:51And then, he's already seen abroad.
06:54In fact, I think this is one of the times that I can say that
07:00other countries are approaching us and saying,
07:03Hey, your rider is really extraordinary.
07:06He's developing very well.
07:08So, hopefully, next year, when he becomes an elite racer,
07:11meaning he's no longer a junior athlete,
07:14he will carry that with him.
07:16I would caution, of course, that we can expect the same level of results
07:21now that he is up against the best in the world.
07:25But hopefully, he will use these next few years to learn and become better.
07:30And aside from that, I would also like to congratulate you, Sir Jeremy Gopher,
07:34on our Gopher Gold Series that was a success, a successful run this year.
07:37So, can you share with us what are our plans for next year?
07:42Because you've mentioned before that our plan is to expand this next year.
07:47Do we already have places in mind where this will be done or will be held?
07:53Well, definitely, we want to include more venues.
07:59So, we're just fixing that.
08:01We're working, as you know, Gopher Gold also works with a lot of other events.
08:05So, we want to make sure that we're not just setting dates.
08:09We want to give people as much opportunity as possible to race.
08:13Because the whole reason behind the Gopher Gold Race Series
08:17is to give opportunities for people to race.
08:19Like I said earlier, a lot of these athletes, they don't have the funding.
08:25That's why we go to them.
08:27That's why we want to have more events.
08:29Definitely, Luzon, besides Mindanao, we're looking at New Clark City
08:33as one of our venues.
08:35BCDA has always been a very good partner of us.
08:37If you remember this year, we did it in Sacobia Bridge.
08:41And then, we will look for other venues in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
08:48The recently concluded ASEAN Mountain Bike in Pasig City,
08:53where our team competed, has also expressed interest in having a road bike race there.
09:00So, that's something that we might look at as well.
09:03This is good for Filipino athletes, rather than Filipino cyclists.
09:09Because this is a good opportunity for them.
09:12Because we can see that the cycling here in the Philippines is really flourishing.
09:18Sir, one of the things you mentioned earlier is talent identification.
09:24And as much as we want to help everyone who needs support,
09:30you have to pick and choose.
09:31So, I just want to ask, is this something, talent identification?
09:37Because you guys are now scouts.
09:39Is this something that you developed throughout the years?
09:42Or do you really have a natural eye for it?
09:45I think it's a little bit of both.
09:48Right?
09:50As Go For Gold, we've been doing it since 2017.
09:55So, it's been a few years.
09:56It's been a few years.
09:59Of course, we've also chosen some that are not okay.
10:03So, you learn from that.
10:05So, you learn which aspects to look for.
10:09And sometimes, the very best athletes, there's really something special about them.
10:14I was telling John Andre earlier, we were talking before this.
10:19When I first saw him, I've never met him before.
10:21In fact, I don't think he's ever raced outside of Bicol at the time.
10:26But at the start, I was already telling Coach Eds,
10:30you watch this kid, I think he's going to win.
10:32And true enough, he won.
10:34Because there's something about him.
10:36And I learned that about him, the more that we spend time,
10:40he has a single-minded focus.
10:42You can see that when he races.
10:44You can see that in everything that he does.
10:46His priority is to be better at sport.
10:49Actually, what I admire about John Andre Aguja,
10:57he's already at 45 UCI World Ranking points.
11:04So, what can you say about that, sir?
11:07Because this is a big thing for Philippine cycling.
11:10He's still young, he's already in the top 50.
11:15But what can you say about that, sir?
11:16Oh, I'm very happy about that.
11:18Because, yes, he's top 45 in the world in Junior Rankings
11:23after the recently concluded event in Pasi City.
11:27But what is extraordinary about that is,
11:31he's the highest-ranked Asian Junior, right?
11:38It's hard for us to compete against the European riders
11:41because they have so many more events in Europe.
11:43They have more opportunities to gain points.
11:46Now, I'm not saying that if we were there,
11:49we could get the same number of points that they are, of course.
11:53While we are a very good rider,
11:56John is a very good rider in the Asian level.
11:59We all know it's different in Europe.
12:01When he raced the Worlds, I think he got 70th place.
12:06Although, I don't believe that's representative of his actual skill.
12:10It's also because, of course, it's nerve-wracking.
12:13Right?
12:15It's his first time to compete in Europe against the very best in the world.
12:18He also had that experience.
12:20Next time he goes to Europe, I'm sure he will do a better job.
12:24But I don't expect that he'll dominate there like he is dominating here.
12:30Actually, that's good.
12:32Because when it comes to European leagues,
12:37the level is really different.
12:38Even when it comes to basketball.
12:40Right?
12:42Even when it comes to basketball,
12:44our Filipino basketball players are usually sent to European leagues.
12:49We really can't catch up with them before.
12:52It's really challenging when you reach the European stage.
12:56So, those are the news here from our Sports Patron at Go4Gold,
13:02Sports Patron, Jeremy Gok.
13:04Don't let your teammates down because PTV Sports will be back.
13:08Thanks.
