00:00Let's join teammate Rafael Bandayrel and Sports Memorabilia Collector Dr. Michael Rico-Messina
00:07in their review of the world of Philippine sports.
00:10History, nostalgia, and much more.
00:13Here on Treasures of the Game.
00:23Good morning teammates and happy new year!
00:25Welcome to the first episode of Treasures of the Game of 2025.
00:30I'm your host, Rafael Bandayrel.
00:32And with me, as always, is our subject matter expert, Dr. Michael Rico-Messina.
00:37And look, happy new year to you!
00:39Happy new year to Raf and happy new year to all our teammates watching Treasures of the Game.
00:47And to our unexpected teammates, recently, after new year, it's our resident subject matter expert's birthday.
00:55Doc, happy birthday, belated happy birthday.
00:58Do you want to say it or should we just hide it?
01:02Let's hide it first, sir. Thank you for greeting me.
01:05Well, anyway, because it's my partner's birthday,
01:09here in the hobby stadium, he received gifts from different personalities from the world of basketball.
01:19But Doc, before we get to that, please tell us about your birthday celebration experience.
01:26So, one week ago, Raf, we held a celebration here in the hobby stadium for my birthday,
01:32where our friends from different fields of basketball came.
01:38So, we have coaches, players, journalists, writers, and of course, fans who came.
01:45And who are the notable players and coaches who attended here?
01:52So, some of the players who came off-note were Sir Vin Singson, one of my idols growing up in Ginebra.
02:01And for the coaches, some of the coaches were Sir Pao Raselli from Chiang Kai-Shek.
02:07Our guests were star-studded.
02:14Anyway, Doc, I'm sure you're excited because even I'm excited.
02:18So, let's see what gifts Doc received.
02:22And of course, those who know Doc, they know what gifts he will receive.
02:27Of course, sports memorabilia.
02:29So, Doc, what's first on our list today?
02:32So, here, if you look at the table, this item is the biggest.
02:37It's the most eye-popping. You can see it right away.
02:41So, this is a sports bag.
02:43But it's not just any sports bag.
02:49So, if you look at the front, there's a Ginebra logo.
02:53So, this is from the 1996 PBA season.
02:57Sir Vin Singson used this.
03:00So, shout-out to Sir Vin.
03:04And we can see, Doc, on the side, his number is here.
03:08And there's also a signature.
03:10So, what's on it?
03:12All the best, Doc Mico.
03:14There.
03:15So, we know Sir Vin because his number, number 12, is engraved right here on the bag.
03:20And of course, we didn't miss the opportunity to have Sir Vin autographed this.
03:25And we can see, Doc, the quality of the bag.
03:29I don't think I'll ever see this kind of quality again.
03:34It's really different.
03:36Okay, Doc.
03:37Our next item is a T-shirt.
03:40Oh, yes.
03:41So, we're with the Ginebra team.
03:43So, this shirt, I acquired it last year.
03:47But since I was worried that Sir Vin Singson might pass away,
03:51they brought this to my birthday party.
03:53So, this is a T-shirt from that time, 1986.
03:57So, we can see that it's also made of ginebra.
04:01It's placed on the uniform of the caricatures here.
04:05Back then, in the 90s, our teams would make T-shirts
04:11with caricatures of players and coaching staff placed in front of the T-shirt.
04:17We can see, Doc, that this T-shirt has a very 90s art style.
04:22And please tell our fans watching this,
04:25who are the notable players that you can see here?
04:28So, in this T-shirt, we can see the roster of our 1996 Ginebra team.
04:35So, let's start from the top.
04:38So, of course, Sir Vin is the one attending our birthday celebration.
04:42There, Sir Benny Cheng, Novi Locsin, Marlo Aquino, EJ Pyle,
04:48Wilmer Ong, Maki Dehoya, and Sir Dodot, Vice Mayor Dodot Jaworski.
04:55Here in the front, there's JV Gayoso, Pino Jarencio,
05:01and of course, Sir Robert Jaworski Sr.,
05:04Bal David, and the assistant coaches, Sir Philip Cesar and Rino Salazar.
05:11So, they are the ones in this T-shirt with caricatures.
05:18Next, we have a jersey here.
05:21So, let's show our teammates what it is.
05:25So, in this jersey, it's related to the one that was given to me by one of the attendants of the party.
05:33He is Sir Cromwell Mandia.
05:37He is the Marikenio speaker.
05:38So, shout out to Sir Cromwell.
05:40So, this is the one that was given to me by a magazine in 1960.
05:46So, we can see here the Philippine team wearing their uniform back then.
05:53So, if we look at it, the look of the uniforms of our national team members is very simplistic.
06:02So, now, it's perfect because in the exhibit that I did,
06:06Sir Ralph also gave me a small exhibit of memorabilia for the attendees of the party.
06:14So, this is one of the ones that I exhibited during that celebration.
06:20So, this is an actual game-worn jersey of our Philippine team during the 1960 Rome Olympics.
06:29So, it fits perfectly with the magazine that Sir Cromwell gave to me.
06:35And Doc, the jersey that you were holding earlier,
06:37we can notice that it's number 15.
06:40So, can we say which player wore this jersey?
06:44Yes. The player who gave me this jersey is Sir Edgardo Roque.
06:49So, he played in the 1960 Rome Olympics and he also played in the 1962 Asian Games.
06:56So, the number that was assigned to him was one of the younger players back then,
07:03the higher number, 15.
07:05So, the captain of the national team at that time was the one wearing number 3.
07:11So, if you're the captain, you're number 3.
07:14Down the line, he changed, right? He became number 4.
07:17For example, in Slam Dunk, the captains were number 4 in their component.
07:22They were number 4 in their component.
07:23They were number 4 in their component.
07:24Yes, Maki and Pukit Jima.
07:27So, if we compare this to the jerseys of our national team now,
07:34the design of our uniform is very simple.
07:40So, we have the number and the seal of the Republic of the Philippines.
07:45And of course, the material is different.
07:49And on the back, there's no player's name.
07:52It's just the number.
07:54Very simplistic.
07:55The design of the jerseys is not yet very individualized.
07:59And there are no sponsors.
08:02And lastly, Doc, we have photo cards.
08:04And of course, we need to know who this is.
08:07Doc, take it away.
08:09So, these photo cards were given by Sir Dwight.
08:14So, this is like a birthday gift for me.
08:19So, shout out to Sir Dwight.
08:21Thank you for these items.
08:23So, these are two cards.
08:25So, these are Coca-Cola cards from 1974.
08:29What these cards feature is our national team that competed in the 1974 Asian Games.
08:37So, here, we have two variants.
08:40So, we have a portrait.
08:42So, here.
08:43And we have action shots.
08:45So, what we got, what was given to us, was from the President, Sir Ramon Fernandez.
08:51Now, Doc, when young people collect K-Pop photo cards,
08:57we already had that before.
08:59This is his version.
09:00Athletes.
09:02Legends of the game.
09:04So, Doc, since it's the new year and you also had a birthday recently,
09:08do you have a wish for this year?
09:10Raph, as a collector, my wish is that this year,
09:14I can encounter a lot of different and valuable memorabilia
09:20that I can add to my collection.
09:23And I hope I can meet a lot of basketball personalities.
09:29So, I can show some of those items to them and maybe I can sign them.
09:35So, maybe that's my wish for myself as a collector.
09:40And I'm sure, Doc, if you can do that, they will really appreciate it
09:43because we already know that our athletes are fans of sports
09:48and if they can see the items from the past,
09:52I'm sure they will have a special connection to it.
09:55But, teammates, that's where our episode for today ends.
09:59Pleasures of the game.
10:00Thank you very much again to the Hobby Stadium.
10:02Again, I am your host, Sir Pharrell Bandayrel.
10:04And I am Dr. Michael Rico Masina.
10:07And until next time, in Treasures of the Game,
10:10sharing treasures, sharing stories.
