00:00We're back on PTV Sports and today we have live sports member via collector Dr. Michael Rico-Messina
00:07to take a look at the world of Philippine sports.
00:10Saisaya, Nostalgia, and many more.
00:13We're here at Treasures of the Game.
00:16Good morning.
00:17Our morning is beautiful.
00:19Doc, welcome back.
00:20Hello, Ma'am Sheila, Ma'am Bernadette. Good morning.
00:23We're here again at Treasures of the Game this morning.
00:27The color of our combination is beautiful.
00:30That's true.
00:31Let's talk about the upcoming events in relation to basketball.
00:38Actually, Ma'am, on March 30, this coming Sunday,
00:43we'll have a so-called Basketball Baliktanaw.
00:47It's the first ever Philippine Basketball History and Culture Summit.
00:53Yes.
00:54What's in this Baliktanaw, Doc?
00:57Because I saw you have Sir Sam Sarmenta, you have Sir Xiao Jua, a historian.
01:03What content will you discuss here?
01:07This summit aims to create a greater appreciation of our fans
01:14for the history and culture of Philippine basketball.
01:18This is really like a convention.
01:20We have speakers, lecturers, and panel discussants
01:26to explain their experiences in Philippine basketball.
01:31But Doc, before this Basketball Baliktanaw,
01:35what was our process?
01:38How did we come up with this?
01:39What are we going to do this March 30?
01:43So, it started with an idea that
01:47why don't we have a gathering of legends, players,
01:53and experts in Philippine basketball
01:56so that they can share their knowledge with those attending the convention.
02:02And then, one more thing is that
02:04since PBA will celebrate its 58th anniversary,
02:10this is a perfect jumping-off event
02:14before we celebrate that milestone.
02:17I'm curious, Doc, how did you choose the speakers attending this convention?
02:24For example, Sir Sam Sarmenta,
02:28he'll be lecturing about why basketball is ingrained in the culture of the Philippines.
02:35Also, Sir Seb's experience in Philippine basketball
02:39through all these years of broadcasting.
02:42He'll be sharing a lot with us regarding that.
02:45Sir Shaushua is our well-renowned historian.
02:50He'll be sharing the importance of memorabilia in history.
02:55Here at our summit, we have memorabilia exhibits.
03:01So, the collections that I've been showing for the past several months,
03:06we'll be displaying some of those.
03:08Wow! That's the highlight!
03:11This is one of the things that our sports enthusiasts will be looking forward to.
03:16Usually, our museums are filled with historical artifacts.
03:23But for Doc Missina, sports memorabilia is unique.
03:28And for the very first time, we'll have this.
03:30Isn't it beautiful?
03:31Yes.
03:32To be honest, I've never seen content like this before.
03:35We're showing sports memorabilia.
03:39But Doc, do we have any special guests for our basketball convention?
03:46Aside from our experts and lecturers,
03:49of course, we have some legendary players attending.
03:52Some of them are Sir Ed Roque.
03:55Sir Ed Roque is a 1916 Olympian and 1962 Asian Games gold medalist.
04:02Sir Jimmy Mariano will also be attending.
04:08He was the skipper of our national team in 1972 at the Munich Olympics.
04:14Then, for the younger 90s, the PBA superstars,
04:20Sir Benji Paras, Bong Hawkins, Jeffrey Carraso, and Vince Heason will also be attending.
04:29Doc, how did you get all these people together for this event?
04:36This is also a culmination of my collecting journey.
04:40As I've been collecting through all these years,
04:43I've developed a relationship with those figures and those players.
04:48That's why it's easy for me to invite them.
04:52I'm happy that they accepted our invitation.
04:56Of course. Who wouldn't?
04:58This is the very first convention talking about sports.
05:01You mentioned PBA legends.
05:03Now, we're going to talk about this book.
05:06The title is, When We Are Champions.
05:09Doc, what is this book about?
05:12This particular book was authored by Sir Noel Albano.
05:17It dwells upon the time of the golden era of Philippine basketball.
05:22It's from the 1930s to the 1960s.
05:26Back then, we were the champions, not only in the Asian scene,
05:30where we were always the champions in the Asian Games and ABC,
05:34but also in the international stage.
05:37We always made it to the World Cup, FIBA World Cup, and the Olympics.
05:42This book details the era of Philippine basketball.
05:46As early as from the 1930s to the 1960s,
05:52you mentioned that Filipinos were very passionate about basketball.
05:56What happened?
05:58Why do we have talent and skills in this sport?
06:04First of all, we were one of the first Americans to be taught how to play basketball.
06:10Also, Filipinos were passionate about playing basketball.
06:15Like Sir Seb's lecture,
06:18since the early 1900s,
06:22Filipinos embraced and loved basketball.
06:26This reflects in our performances in international competitions.
06:31Doc, you know, you know a lot about the history of basketball as a sport here in the country.
06:39I'm curious, what really motivates us?
06:43Why are we very into basketball?
06:46I didn't dream of becoming a professional basketball player or a varsity player,
06:54but I wanted to see the evolution of our game from the 1930s to the present time.
07:03I also wanted to give the opportunity to talk to the players and coaches
07:09who became a part of our history here in the game of basketball.
07:13You know, it's not just basketball that has a Doc Messina.
07:17We have a lot of events and sports here
07:21where we can really see the beauty of performance,
07:26especially when medals are won.
07:28Of course, it is recognized in various tournaments in other countries.
07:32Just like you, Doc.
07:33You are one with the world of basketball.
07:37But when it comes to the convention,
07:40will this book be discussed?
07:42Hopefully, Sir Noel will be able to attend the book signing of this event.
07:51But Professor Bonnie Escoda will also make a book about basketball,
07:58but it will be more comprehensive from the very start until the present.
08:02He will give a lecture here at the summit about the genesis and the golden age of Philippine basketball.
08:11Very interesting.
08:12Let's cover it.
08:13You don't have to ask.
08:14My background is in history.
08:16I am really fond of history.
08:18This is really the first event that caught my interest.
08:23Now, Doc, if they want to watch,
08:26how do they go to this convention?
08:27How will they know the details?
08:29For details regarding the Basketball Baliktanaw,

08:44Maybe I'll take the opportunity,

08:49to invite our teammates to the Basketball Baliktanaw.
08:53To everyone watching,
08:55I would like to invite you to the first ever Philippine Basketball History and Culture Summit,
09:00the Basketball Baliktanaw.
09:02It will be held on March 30 at the Ortigas Foundation Library in Green Hills.
09:09I'm sure a lot of people will go there.
09:12Filipinos are known as basketball fans.
09:15Definitely.
09:16A lot of information, a lot of experience.
09:19And of course, you know, it's good to hear first-hand information.
09:23Yes, from legends.
09:24Yes, we're overloaded with sports info,
09:27especially when it comes to basketball.
09:29Thank you very much, Doc Rico.
09:31Thank you, Doc.
