00:00:00all right let's bring out they're so they're so wonderful to please help me
00:00:04welcome Sophie Tucker
00:00:24I gotta say the swag level in this room I've done a lot of these but some of the
00:00:29outfits do you see the purple hats over there like the energy in here is really
00:00:33good so thank you it doesn't feel like a Wednesday it feels like an actual
00:00:36weekend so thank you very much hi guys hi thank you for coming thank you for
00:00:42having us I am happy to be here earlier on you looked at my coat and you're
00:00:47like are you a doctor but you didn't realize I had Jason Momoa on the back
00:00:50of my jacket yeah there's many kinds of doctors that's true I'd like to be his
00:00:55yeah what is the Jason Momoa doctor but we have ass doctors on stage with us do
00:01:02you we'll get into that in a little bit I'm a Sophie Tucker nerd since like day
00:01:06one Sophie Tucker and also when I when I walked up and I saw the Coachella prop
00:01:10I was like I saw that at Coachella she climbs that you guys she climbs that
00:01:16yes I do so they're currently doing their album cycle for bread which is
00:01:21awesome points for anybody who can tell me the acronym for bread go you've done
00:01:31your homework I see I like it they know so when when artists are doing their
00:01:37album cycle they get interviewed ad nauseum and they have to tell their
00:01:41story over and over and over so I don't want to make them go through that so I'm
00:01:44gonna tell your story a little bit right just so they get to know the basics you
00:01:49guys interject if you have to and then we'll get to the main points we'll start
00:01:53with Sophie Sophie was born in Germany she's hung out in places like Canada
00:02:00Atlanta Italy eventually moved to Brazil when did you decide that music was your
00:02:07thing I mean I feel like music has always been my thing just sometimes more
00:02:12in private but I've been writing music since I was a kid like since early
00:02:17middle school do you remember what the first song you wrote was yes it was it
00:02:22was actually a book report true to form so it was a book report she gave a
00:02:30teacher the Apple with the book report oh is she a nerd Oh beyond yeah it was
00:02:38it was for things fall apart was the book and the song was fire and rain
00:02:44James Taylor but I'm I like rewrote the lyrics so instead of being like I've
00:02:49seen fire and I've seen rain I was like a concho you know met his brother yeah
00:02:56so I just like rewrote lyrics and I was like whoa that's how you write songs as
00:03:00you can like rewrite lyrics of pre-existing melodies and then I figured
00:03:04out that you could change the melody which got me eventually to songwriting
00:03:08uh-huh okay so then we move on over to Tucker who's from Massachusetts
00:03:12division one ballplayer eventually eventually captain leader badass
00:03:19discipline then there was an injury yeah I got it was like a sickness I end up
00:03:25getting mono and it didn't go away no I'm not getting no it was weird though
00:03:36because so I I thought you know it'd take a couple weeks whatever I made out
00:03:41with the wrong person take a couple weeks I'd be fine and then it didn't get
00:03:45better and I was like sick and nauseous and couldn't get out of bed for like
00:03:49seven months and they like I could to doctors like all over the place they
00:03:53didn't know what's wrong with me you didn't ask one of your ass doctors that
00:03:56you were telling me about I didn't know that if I had just thrown my ass I would
00:03:59have been fine now you know but in that time I wanted to be productive and
00:04:06didn't really have the energy to get out of bed so I just like watch YouTube
00:04:10tutorials and figured out how to produce music so then they both ended up at
00:04:14Brown University which is where the faded that's why this happened this is
00:04:17the end of I was playing basketball around so it wasn't till my like senior
00:04:22year that I started making music that's where they met but they met at an art
00:04:26gallery am I correct okay tell me about the faded meeting the meeting I can
00:04:31either of us could definitely do this one go for it there was a student-led
00:04:38art show that they asked me to come DJ at like the after-party and I went a
00:04:43little early and I saw Sophie performing with a jazz trio and she was singing
00:04:49Brazilian Portuguese bossa nova music and I had never really heard anything
00:04:54like that just a basketball player from Boston with mono and it was this was
00:05:02seven-month mono is like a thing this was this was like a year after that yeah
00:05:08but I was still struggling with like inflammation and they called it chronic
00:05:13fatigue syndrome but that's just a word they do when they don't know what's
00:05:16wrong with you and I was so I was getting really into music playing all
00:05:22the house parties and I saw so what Sophie was doing and I was like man
00:05:26that's really beautiful but it's really slow and like it's not my thing but like
00:05:31if you could mix that with what I'm trying to make it might be an
00:05:34interesting fun thing were you open to it right away kind of yeah he was like
00:05:40hey I'm gonna bring up a drum track just like keep up and I was like okay and I
00:05:44just I was playing and then I was like this is cool and then he was like let's
00:05:47let's do a recording of it tomorrow and I was like okay and then we just everything
00:05:53was just like really organic we barely even knew each other but we just like
00:05:57got to business not not in that way
00:06:04we just like made music and like we weren't even friends for a long time we
00:06:10were just it just worked really well what did I say they were they were just
00:06:20laughing at like we weren't friends they're like oh you guys need to take
00:06:24that off the table I mean we will get to that part don't worry I got you there's
00:06:29not even a table to take it I know but I have a point what I'm saying Tucker is I
00:06:34have a point to make and you'll appreciate it trust me we'll get there I
00:06:37want to get to the EP anyways let's fast-forward to the EP when drinky came
00:06:42out I remember where I was when I heard drinky for the first time I was I had
00:06:46just I had just done like I was trying to get global entry and I was in a
00:06:50mini mall parking lot and I was my friend was going to the summer games in
00:06:56Rio and my algorithm was like on point and sent me drinky and I'm in my car and
00:07:01my body started moving and I started speaking Portuguese which I don't but
00:07:06that's how powerful that song just kind of like I don't know something happens
00:07:10and so I sent it to my friend and then he sent it and he sent it and I was like
00:07:14these people are fucking fantastic so tell me about the success that drinky
00:07:19brought and how that tasted when it first happened well I was looking for a
00:07:24job like half-heartedly hoping that I wouldn't have to take a job and so when
00:07:32when drinky worked like basically it got an Apple commercial and that was the
00:07:37first thing that we ever got and it was our first song we had ever made together
00:07:40and it was only released on SoundCloud so like it was out but it wasn't you
00:07:45know it was sort of it wasn't even on like radios you have to be like plugged
00:07:52you have to be one of those people like explored and looked for music and had
00:07:55different like kind of platforms and then it eventually drinky found you you
00:07:59didn't find it it finds you yeah so basically drinky finding people and
00:08:05having some success is what allowed me to pay rent and like stop looking for
00:08:10another job and just put all of my energy into Sophie Tucker and that's
00:08:14when you knew too yeah I've been convincing Sophie to be in a band with
00:08:19me for I don't know eight months prior to that probably right well we're still
00:08:24at Brown but you didn't convince her cuz she was still half-heartedly looking for
00:08:28a job well no she was just living on couches and it was you know that builds
00:08:34character yeah it really does okay so after that then I just remember it kind
00:08:40of like skyrocketing from there and it was best friend and then purple hats
00:08:43let's get to bread which is why we're here which is amazing have you guys
00:08:48heard it yet what's the acronym again cuz I know you enjoy this okay I have
00:08:58notes on on bread but what do you want to each of your albums is something
00:09:02different so tell me about where this one came from and how do you feel about
00:09:06it and how would you describe it I would say this one came from the whole
00:09:13like eight or nine years of of growth and us figuring out who we are what we
00:09:19want to say what we want to sound like I think we intentionally really thought
00:09:26about this when we were making this album and when we were putting it
00:09:29together and we wanted to really go back to like what was Sophie Tucker what
00:09:35could only Sophie Tucker make and the way we think about that is really like
00:09:38half of my brain half of Sophie's brain and and so we went back and looked at
00:09:43songs like drinky and looked at the soft animals EP and we were like what was so
00:09:48special about this and you know have we how can we make sure we keep that
00:09:55specialness when we are still pushing forward and trying to like make new
00:10:00things and we I really think we just made the best music we've made it feels
00:10:06really really good I feel really proud of it there's nothing I would change
00:10:09about it how do you feel so I feel the same way I think it's our best music yet
00:10:17and I the other thing that's really cool about it is that it is very Brazil and
00:10:23when we started the band I had you know I basically wanted to go back to Brazil
00:10:28and move there and I had a fellowship to go there and Tucker convinced me to
00:10:31join the band instead and I was so in love with the country and I just really
00:10:36wanted to live there and spend time there and make music there and just feel
00:10:39inspired and it really wasn't until the making of bread that we really went back
00:10:45for a significant period of time so I feel like it was it was like my it was
00:10:51like Tucker's promise to me you know and I was like a little bit of a homecoming
00:10:56but I just felt like it wasn't that I was pulling from inspiration from eight
00:11:00years ago I was actually back in Brazil we spent months there you know during
00:11:04the making of the album and so I was just you can hear it in the album
00:11:09there's a lot of Brazil and it just felt really good to be back you know in the
00:11:13language like as present-day Sophie inspired by that place rather than just
00:11:19sort of memories from long ago when I lived there the Brazilian culture are
00:11:25any of you close to it or familiar with it at all it's it's very it's very
00:11:29intoxicating it's like a very sexy culture and it's very worldly when did
00:11:33you both you fell in love with the Brazilian culture first but when did she
00:11:38kind of rope you into it I mean it's it's felt like almost a third member of
00:11:43the band for a long time so I've always had a real fondness and love for it but
00:11:51I would say two years ago almost two years ago now we went to carnival for
00:11:55the first time and that I also think that was where a lot of the inspiration
00:12:01for this album really started like we had a couple things in the works before
00:12:05that but we didn't know they would end up being part of an album but I think
00:12:10when we went to this the samba parade and ended up at like a baile funk party
00:12:17at like 7 in the morning and my mind was just blown and it's interesting
00:12:22because it's not even Sophie's favorite type of music from Brazil she kind of
00:12:28you know goes through the more classic traditional jazz and bossa nova stuff
00:12:33and that never really like talked to me as much but when I got in there and
00:12:39heard this like funk set I was just like I get it I'm obsessed this is the best
00:12:45thing ever and it definitely made its way into this album and the rest is
00:12:49history so the first song that stood out for me was throw some ass for obvious
00:12:53reasons because you can't make with the title like that you expect something
00:12:57like to the window to the wall how does the rest of it go while the sweat runs
00:13:01down that's right your balls well that would have been okay but it's got such
00:13:07a song ever it really is it's throw some ass and even saying it is funny but it's
00:13:13such a melodically elegant song like when she's like turn around and make it
00:13:18clap you're like okay I'll do that it's like so polite so that's the first song
00:13:23that sticks out do you want to say anything about it it's self-explanatory
00:13:26but yeah we had so much fun making it like we're in the studio and at the time
00:13:31basically I had had all this horrible back pain and very long story short I
00:13:38felt like when I was doing this choreography that actually Lucas Hive
00:13:42is here tonight choreographer was teaching me how to jog a bunda I felt
00:13:47like my I wasn't focusing on my pain anymore and suddenly like my back pain
00:13:51was better so I was like I got to tell the secret to the world I'm writing a
00:13:56song about it and then when we were in the studio we were it was just so funny
00:14:01it's it's one of my it's possibly is my favorite and then the other one that
00:14:04stands out to me is I hope I say this right
00:14:06caffeine a cafuna cafuna cafuna has this artist have you ever heard of channel
00:14:11trust today's channel today's that man's voice is so sexy it's like it
00:14:16makes you want to lick sweat off a sexy stranger's body I'm not kidding like
00:14:20he's he's a he's that man should be studied that song is amazing can you
00:14:25tell me anything about that yeah so basically actually when we were in Rio
00:14:31I was hanging out with the poet who wrote drinky and Chaka Chaka and my
00:14:37Portuguese professor from Brown and I was lying in her lap and she was doing
00:14:41cafuna and my hair and cafuna is like one of these magical Portuguese words
00:14:45that can't really be translated which is just you know putting your fingers like
00:14:48gently through someone's hair in a loving way and and I was like cafuna is
00:14:53just my favorite word and it's my favorite thing ever and so the poet was
00:14:56like noted okay and so he wrote a poem and then he sent it to me he was like I
00:15:00was inspired by that moment on the couch with Patricia so here's a poem I was
00:15:04like great so we made cafuna and then we were like it's missing something then
00:15:08we were watching Channel Trace perform we were like that's what it's missing
00:15:12and it just came together just like so naturally and then wolf which I've read
00:15:17one of you said was the most Sophie Tucker song it kind of embodies
00:15:21everything that you are is that true because you led with it yeah I think it
00:15:27definitely there's a big case for it I think it has a recognizable guitar riff
00:15:33that's like a big lead it has my sort of like low but also sort of comedy you
00:15:43know vocals it has Sophie singing in four languages it has a friend Kahlo
00:15:49from Nigeria who's an amazing artist it just it kind of has all the aspects of
00:15:55like there's no genre for that song at all I think and I think a lot of the
00:16:01songs on this album kind of feel that way and and I think that in a certain
00:16:05way is our genre yeah that's exactly it I actually agree at this record is
00:16:10amazing and what I was gonna say earlier about the table that you didn't want me
00:16:14to put anything on some of the best relationships in the world especially a
00:16:18man and woman are platonic it doesn't all of most of my best friends are male
00:16:23one of them is in this room and every time I'm Sam where are you where he's in
00:16:29here so he were there is he's right there he's right behind you hi every
00:16:34time I put we've been best friends for 21 years and every time I post a picture
00:16:37everybody's like you're gonna end up together I'm like bitch no we're not
00:16:40like we're literally best friends but what I'm saying is like he's like they
00:16:44have to sometimes they have to feel those questions and that's just two
00:16:51people that we have a song for that too I'm gonna end it with this this moment
00:16:58that I saw like it's a clip of you that's going around on the internet and
00:17:02it lives rent-free in my mind and I'm gonna say it with no context and then
00:17:06we're gonna end the interview and we're gonna dance all right is there a child
00:17:09in here I mean what all right are you sure okay no okay what am I doing on the
00:17:20video there's just a video of Sophie that somebody remakes I guess they were
00:17:24doing an interview and all she says is carbs and dick and that's it and somebody
00:17:30remixed it and Sophie I think about it every time I really I've never seen you
00:17:34were part of it I was I was at the interview I never gonna send it to you
00:17:41when you guys get offstage but now every time I see a piece of bread mm-hmm I
00:17:45think of Sophie and I think of carbs and dick and I'm gonna leave it I think I'm
00:17:49gonna leave it on that note and now we're gonna dance
00:18:19it's an archaic fallacy that doesn't
00:19:19fossil fossil focal look at you
00:19:24look at you to buckle to fossil fossil focal look at you
00:19:31I don't believe
00:19:33in what you call purity
00:19:37it's an archaic fallacy
00:19:41that doesn't belong
00:19:44to me
00:19:47Scared of conversation
00:19:49You could do less
00:19:51Me don't please you
00:19:52You come to my bed
00:19:54Don't mind if there wasn't
00:19:56As long as I'm fed
00:19:58I get off, you get out
00:20:01I get
00:20:02Out
00:20:13I get off, you get out
00:20:47I decide what I devour, I enjoy what gives me power
00:21:11If you want to be my guest, I get off, you get out, I eat bread
00:21:41Alright, sing along with me if you know it
00:21:58I think that I'll keep loving you way past sixty-five
00:22:02We made a language for us two we don't need to describe
00:22:07Every time you call on me, I drop what I do
00:22:12You are my best friend and we've got some shit to shoot
00:22:16Okay, I don't need to tell you guys how to respond to me right now
00:22:32But I want to hear it loud
00:22:35Yo, you want to meet me at the bar?
00:22:37Yeah!

00:22:59We made a language for us two we don't need to describe
00:23:03And now sing with us!
00:23:04Every time you call on me, I drop what I do
00:23:08You are my best friend and we've got some shit to shoot
00:23:12That's the way it is, that's the way it goes
00:23:16It's just us two, it's deja vu, is it what we know?
00:23:21That's the way we like it, don't complicate
00:23:26No need to fight it, just invite it
00:23:29Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
00:23:36We got a lot of the free fam in the house tonight
00:23:43And we got some new friends in the house tonight as well

00:24:23Yeah!
00:24:24Yo, you want to meet me on the block?
00:24:25Yeah!

00:24:28Okay!
00:24:29I think that I'll keep loving you way past sixty-five
00:24:33We made a language for us two we don't need to describe
00:24:38Every time you call on me I duck what I do
00:24:43You are my best friend and we got some shit to shoot
00:24:47Do you want it, do you want it, do you want it?
00:24:56Yeah!
00:25:08So I think you've got something wrong with you Something's not right with me, too
00:25:15It's not right with me But the state that you're in is innocent
00:25:20I just can't believe in what the fuck's original sin anyway
00:25:25So I think you've got something wrong with you Something's not right with me, too
00:25:30It's not right with me But the state that you're in is innocent
00:25:36I just can't believe in what the fuck's original sin anyway
00:25:48So I think you've got something wrong with you Something's not right with me, too
00:25:53It's not right with me But the state that you're in is innocent
00:25:59I just can't believe in what the fuck's original sin
00:26:04A hurting hand is just connected to a hurting soul
00:26:10It's not your fault if you're a hurting heart
00:26:14Sometimes it happens but the more you know
00:26:19So I think you've got something wrong with you Something's not right with me, too
00:26:24It's not right with me But the state that you're in is innocent
00:26:30I just can't believe in what the fuck's original sin anyway
00:26:35So I think you've got something wrong with you Something's not right with me, too
00:26:40It's not right with me But the state that you're in is innocent
00:26:45I just can't believe in what the fuck's original sin anyway
00:27:00A hurting hand is just connected to a hurting soul
00:27:11It's not your fault if you're a hurting heart

00:30:28To the Sophie Tucker Center for Asses That Don't Move Good
00:30:32I didn't drop it like it was my car
00:30:46Hey doctor
00:30:49Can you give me something stronger?
00:30:53I've tried everything you offer
00:30:57But I'm still in pain
00:31:01I've spent money
00:31:04I've tried cortisone and honey
00:31:08Last night I got lucky
00:31:11I think I figured out a way
00:31:14It feels so good to throw some ass
00:31:18Turn it round, can you make it clap?
00:31:22Give the old man a heart attack
00:31:25Free your mind when you throw it back
00:31:31Oh, oh, oh
00:31:34Oh, oh, oh
00:31:58It feels so good
00:32:00You know that if your mouth goes down
00:32:02I'll bounce slowly so you won't get tired
00:32:04You know it's easy to happen
00:32:05I'll catch you, I'll knock you down
00:32:06Until you fall in love
00:32:07Baby, my bobo is big
00:32:09I'm generous, I can't be just anyone
00:32:11I catch the ball like a boom, boom, boom, boom
00:32:14Boom, boom, we shoot
00:32:15I play the violin
00:32:17To make you believe that we're passing
00:32:19I do the hand and you come to my command
00:32:23Throw it, throw it
00:32:25I know you like it
00:32:27It feels so good to throw some ass
00:32:31Turn it round, can you make it clap?
00:32:35Give the old man a heart attack
00:32:38Free your mind when you throw it back
00:32:57It feels so good
00:32:59Throw some ass, throw it down
00:33:00Throw it, hit the ground
00:33:02Throw some ass, throw it back
00:33:04Throw it, make it clap
00:33:06Throw some ass, throw it down
00:33:08Throw it, hit the ground
00:33:10Throw some ass, throw it back
00:33:12Feels so good
00:33:13Let's go!
00:33:15Let's go!
00:33:26Feels so good to
00:33:41Feels so good to
00:33:44Feels so good to
00:34:04Okay, so this song is actually not about our relationship
00:34:10even though some people think it is
00:34:13because of the music video
00:34:14It's our fault
00:34:17So the real story is
00:34:18we made a whole different music video for this song
00:34:21If you haven't seen the music video, sorry, go watch it
00:34:24But we made a whole different video for this
00:34:27and then we didn't love it
00:34:29so then we like redid the whole video
00:34:32and made it about me and Sophie's friendship
00:34:34and it's a really sweet video
00:34:35and we really love it
00:34:37but the song is not about our friendship at all
00:34:39It's kind of about more of like a romantic thing
00:34:42that, you know, like maybe there's some
00:34:45You know, we all, I feel like we all have relationships
00:34:48where we're like, maybe they have another partner
00:34:50maybe, maybe, three way?
00:34:55Who said that?
00:34:56No, I'm just kidding
00:35:00Never with Sophie
00:35:01Anyway, the point is that it's not going to work out
00:35:04for whatever reason
00:35:06It's just not appropriate in this lifetime
00:35:09Anyway, this song is called They Help Me
00:35:11I'm shutting up
00:35:22When I met you
00:35:26I knew I'd never get to love you
00:35:33But there's something about the way you hold my hand
00:35:37That makes me feel at home
00:35:42Isn't it obvious?
00:35:48You're not age appropriate
00:35:54But there's something about the way we listen to music
00:35:59That makes me hear it different
00:36:05Hey, homie
00:36:07Let me love you low-key
00:36:10It's just not enough
00:36:12But it's something holy
00:36:16Somebody would get hurt
00:36:18If we took it further
00:36:20Let me love you low-key
00:36:26We found our rhythm
00:36:31Dancing in circles around
00:36:36Whatever we're hoping for
00:36:39Maybe this
00:36:41But it's better like this anyway
00:36:48Hey, homie
00:36:50Let me love you low-key
00:36:53It's just not enough
00:36:55But it's something holy
00:36:58Somebody would get hurt
00:37:01If we took it further
00:37:03Let me love you low-key
00:37:09I know
00:37:13I should let go of you
00:37:20But every time when I see you call
00:37:24I, I pick up the phone
00:37:28Hey, homie
00:37:34Let me love you low-key
00:37:40Somebody would get hurt
00:37:43If we took it further
00:37:45Let me love you low-key
00:37:57Hey, homie
00:38:00Let me love you low-key
00:38:03It's just not enough
00:38:06But it's something holy
00:38:09Somebody would get hurt
00:38:12If we took it further
00:38:15Let me love you low-key
