00:00PTV Sports is back and for our sports banter, we have with us the President of the Philippine Paralympic Committee, Mr. Michael Barredo, to ask for an update on our para-athletes. Good morning, Sir Mike.
00:23Good morning, Mick and Paolo.
00:27Good morning to you all.
00:28Yes, good morning. Sir Mike, how is the return of the 8th Philippine National Para Games?
00:36Well, the 8th Philippine National Para Games was successful. We are thankful to the government and the Philippine Sports Commission that we were able to do this because our last games were in 2019.
00:53And it's very important for us because we're taking advantage of the fact that we don't have too many international events.
01:01Go back to basics and try to find more potential athletes who can join our national training pool.
01:09It went very well, although it can be better in the future.
01:13Sir Mike, you mentioned that it can be better. But in your opinion, what needs to be done by the Paralympic Committee together with PSC to expand and expand your PNPG?
01:32Maybe if I say better, there should be more people who can join. The numbers that were participated in our games today are 900-plus athletes coming from about 72 LGUs and organizations.
01:49But I think we can reach as much as 1,500 athletes because when we did this in Malolos, Bulacan about five years ago, we're at 1,200 and not only that,
02:05we only conducted nine sports here. We're lacking in team sports, only in wheelchair basketball. We don't have goalball, sitting volleyball, football, five-a-side and all that.
02:19So this will increase when we include team sports and almost 20 sports that can be joined by our para-athletes or athletes with disabilities nationwide.
02:30So my expectation here is that more LGUs can join in our regularized, I hope, law that institutionalizes the national games to include the national para-games.
02:50Sir Mike, you mentioned that you want to make it better. Do we have current programs that are being done to make it better?
03:02Yes. Actually, we're doing evaluation now. As a matter of fact, the other day, we had a meeting with the technical directors or technical delegates,
03:12the heads of officiating and of course, sports venues and all. We can improve that. If we can, I said, we will follow and bring the level of the games to at least ASEAN para-games where 11 countries in Southeast Asia are participating.
03:36We will do this because the classification aspect is important. We have to classify the athletes to level the playing field in the three major disability areas, physical impairment, visual impairment and intellectual impairment.
03:52Then of course, the venues. It's good that we had two areas where the venues were. In the Philippine Sports Complex, we had the athletics, because this is where the most people joined and our para-powerlifting was held.
04:10I'm hoping that... Then of course, the other seven, Rizal Memorial Sports Complex. The venues are good, a lot of improvement, but we can still work out probably by improving the accessibility to the playing field of our athletes with disabilities.
04:27We can still... Well, if we join other sports, even if it's 15 sports, I hope we can target the next ones. Then we will be able to probably use other areas. It depends on who wants to host these games. It's important that the facilities are there.
04:49All right. Sir Mike Paolo, good morning. Thank you for your time this morning. Sir, I have a question. You always mention the institutionalization of PNPG. Can you give us an update on this?
05:07Well, the latest I heard about this, this was passed by the lower house and the Senate and it was en route or on its way to the office of the president for signing.
05:21But I don't want to preempt the present status of it. But as far as I know, this will create an opportunity for local government units and other entities that wish to be part of it to prepare.
05:37Because it will have what we call regional games and then of course the national games. They're very similar to what's happening in other Southeast Asian countries.
05:48For example, Indonesia, it's only recently and it's already also institutionalized there, as well as Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia. They have about over 2,000 to 3,000 athletes participating.
06:02But I think they have it every two years. So I'm not quite sure. I've not really been able to go through the law itself or the bill that will become the law.
06:13What I know is that the Philippine Paralympic Committee is part of the, part of going to be the interagency board or council that will be formed for the preparation of the game.
06:25That's all I know. It's on its way or on its way to the office of the president for signing. I hope this will happen because the regular budget will be included in the GAA.
06:36Of course, as I said earlier, it will be regular and therefore our athletes all over the country, including our para-athletes, will be able to prepare for this.
06:49All right. That's good news, Sir Mike. But here in the next agenda of our Philippine Para-athletes, Sir Mike, can you share with us what are the major tournaments or competitions that our para-athletes will be joining in the coming years?
07:09Okay. So again, because of the reintroduction of our national para-games, this is important. I would like to add that we are doing training of trainers.
07:22We will go around the country, provinces and urbanized cities to introduce para-sports, Paralympic sports, what is classification.
07:33Not in all areas but we will choose six or seven sports to introduce for talent identification as well.
07:40Now going back to your question, again this is in preparation. We have three major sports coming up.
07:47For next year, we already have scheduled October 1 next year, what we call the Asian Youth Para-games that will be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
08:00I'm not sure if it's going to be before or after the Asian Youth Games. There will be nine sports.
08:09It's interesting because there are sports here that we did not have before, canoe, kayak, rowing, taekwondo, judo, in the youth level.
08:22And then we have the ASEAN Para-games. Again, it was supposed to be for next year but because the SEA Games will be in December, they pushed it to January of 2026.
08:36These are the 18 sports that will host Thailand and they're very used to it.
08:42And we have the 2026 ASEAN Para-games also after the ASEAN Games in Nagoya, Japan, where you will have about 45 countries participating in 18 sports.
08:54So these are three major events that we are preparing for, of course outside of the usual international tournaments, championships or sub-regional games or regional games that we participate in the other various sports.
09:11This is a big thing. That's why we are fast-tracking to find potential athletes all over the country through the national para-games.
09:23Finally, Sir Mike, what is your message for our para-athletes who are exercising and fighting for our country every day?
09:53Well thank you very much. First of all, Mehek Paolo, and congratulations to PTB Sports for your program. One hour a day, seven times a week is heavy.
10:06But I'm sure there will be a lot of sporting events for you to follow. First of all, thank you to the Philippine Sports Commission for being our partners in the Philippine National Para-games.
10:17We're looking forward to the future. So I'm hoping that our national para-games and our athletes in the national training pool, about 200 plus of them, will continue to train hard.
10:29We are facing a lot of events that they will be able to represent the country, hopefully to bring honor and of course, the medals that we want to make our country and countrymen proud.
10:46I hope they can keep on training hard. I'm also asking that not just the government, the local government units and our national government to come in and support us.
10:57But I'm also asking for support from our private sector. It's coming. There are more and more private corporations and even individuals who want to help our Paralympic movement and development of para-sports.
11:14So for our athletes, continue to train hard and show our countrymen, make them proud that our athletes with disabilities can also do well in international events and activities.
11:25Mabuhay kayo sa PTV4 Sports at mabuhay ang ating mga atleta ng Pilipino.
11:31Alright. Maraming maraming salamat po Sir Mike sa inyong pagpapaunlak dito sa amin sa PTV Sports.
11:38Thank you very much. That's it.
