01:12Good morning, Luciana.
01:13Luciana?
01:14Well, my name is Frank Luciana.
01:16I've been a lawyer for 70 years.
01:20In my theory, much to the regret and dislike of other lawyers, has always been the same.
01:26God made us all different, but we're all the same,
01:31and we're all God's children.
01:33Florida?
01:36What do I think of Florida?
01:39It's all right.
01:41I'm glad you asked me that,
01:43because I have friends who are retired down there,
01:45and the N-W-E-E-N-N-U-Y, the boredom,
01:49the boredom, the boredom,
01:51I'll kill you in Florida.
01:53I don't care who you are.
01:55He probably will die at that desk right over there,
01:58and that's what he wants.
02:00And we know that. We all know that.
02:02That's probable. That's probable.
02:04We all know that, and that's okay.
02:08Here, Pa, here's your boost.
02:17The little old man is a cute little old man now,
02:20but he was a wild man for many years.
02:23This is a man, Toronto Police,
02:26who's dreaming and hoping and praying, Toronto Police,
02:30that you don't send him to jail.
02:33Now he's going to be on this aggravated assault case.
02:37I'm happy for him. It's his last hurrah,
02:39and Frank Carbonetti's very supportive of him.
02:43What's up?
02:44So who was there last night?
02:46It was like three or four people.
02:49What floor did you meet?
02:52Where did you meet and on what floor?
02:55In the prosecutor's office we did it.
02:57Where?
02:58In the prosecutor's office we did it.
03:00Should I open this up?
03:01Yeah, take that. Drink that.
03:04I'm only 48. I don't need boost yet.
03:10Well, how you prepare for a case,
03:12he and I talk about a lot of stuff,
03:14and then I'm going to do all the cross-examination,
03:16direct examination, and I'll do the closing statement,
03:20Ladies and gentlemen, this is not a case of my client,
03:26I won't mention his name, having shot another individual.
03:32This is the case of an American tragedy.
03:38I understand that this may be my last criminal case,
03:43and I'm going to say this with the greatest appreciation
03:48that I hope it's going to be one of my greatest cases.
03:55Now you want me to sing that song?
04:01There must be a way to help me forget that we're through
04:07There must be a way to stop me from thinking of you
04:13There must be a star in the sky
04:16That isn't reflecting your eyes
04:20Oh, there must be a way
04:22But I can't find a way without you
04:31That song's just for you.
04:36What is it about this bar that I like so much?
04:39I don't know.
04:41Come up here.
04:42Yes, sir.
04:44I'm back.
04:54I deal with people who do terrible things.
05:01Awful things.
05:03See, my mind is troubled.
05:05During the day, I get upset, I get annoyed,
05:10I get desperate, I get hopeful.
05:13I go through all the range of emotions.
05:15Some of these cases are so terrible, they're unimaginable.
05:22I'll give you an example.
05:25About 100 years ago, I represented a young boy
05:30who killed his grandmother.
05:34Shot her with a rifle because she wouldn't give him a glass of water.
05:39And yet, recently I saw him, he's a grown man,
05:43and he's strained his life out.
05:46I worked it out so he wouldn't get a desperate, terrible sentence.
05:52To unearth the goodness from some of these people
05:55who have done wicked things is a tremendous job.
05:59That's what the law profession comes down to.
06:10You take this out of the way.
06:12Just get it out.
06:13I don't want to see it.
06:18This is great.
06:20Does he seem different to me at all?
06:23I think he does just because he sees his vulnerability.
06:28I don't know.
06:29I don't know.
06:30I don't know.
06:31I don't know.
06:32I don't know.
06:33I don't know.
06:34Does he seem different to me at all?
06:36I think he does just because he sees his vulnerability.
06:41I mean, he fell.
06:42He fell off a barstool.
06:45Jury selection starts on Tuesday,
06:48and, you know, there could be a plea, possibly.
06:52He will listen to me and Mr. Garbonetti.
06:55And the plea's the right thing to do in this case.
06:58Will you be disappointed that you can't go to court again?
07:03Yes.
07:11Oh, yeah, this brings back memories.
07:17And who's that?
07:19That's familiar.
07:22Deborah Harrison from 1998.
07:24Oh, yeah.
07:25Charged with killing her boyfriend.
07:27Yeah.
07:28Oh, my God.
07:31The Iceman.
07:35Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:39This lawyer, Luciano, was...
07:42I don't know how he lived through all of this.
07:49That's Robert Reldon, I guess.
07:52There was a judge in Bergen County named Reeves.
07:58Judge Reeves had a daughter,
08:01and she was walking along a road and the truck stopped,
08:06and the driver asked her if she wanted to come in,
08:10but the driver was Robert Reldon.
08:19Oh, my God.
08:28Oh, my God.
08:34Holy shit.
08:58Oh, my God.
09:12I mean, it would have been fun going back to court
09:15and throwing punches with you one last time,
09:18but it worked out the way it worked out.
09:21So he'll turn himself in August 1st.
09:24All right, it's going to work out good.
09:26He'll spend 362 days.
09:29Yeah.
09:31And then once that's completed, he gets sentenced to time served.
09:35You did a great job.
09:37No, it worked out great.
09:39He's happy.
09:41It's the right result.
09:44Nobody could do a better job.
09:46These churros are for you.
09:56You have never not gotten churros here.
09:59You've always gotten churros for lunch.
10:01Yeah.
10:03All right.
10:07I don't think he'll ever leave it.
10:12I don't think he could.
10:15Just his aura will kind of, like, haunt the office until it stands.
10:23Or maybe me.
10:29How do you feel, like, in the last few months?
10:32Not good. Not good at all.
10:35Don't feel good at all.
10:37What, are you just getting more tired?
10:40I'm exhausted. I can hardly stand up.
10:42If I stand up, my legs are tired.
10:45And these legs of mine were wonderful.
10:49If you don't feel so well, you could stay home, you know.
10:53If I stay home, I feel guilty.
10:56I feel guilty.
10:57Guilty of what?
10:58I feel guilty that I shouldn't stay home.
11:01I don't feel right.
11:02You're over here, and you're in this office, and I'm sitting home.
11:08Do you still sing or no?
11:10Huh?
11:11Do you still sing it or no?
11:13Sing it?
11:15I'll get by as long as I have you.
11:19Here, take this.
11:23I'll get by as long as I have you,
11:26though there be rain and darkness too.
11:30I'll not complain as long as I have you.
11:36Poverty may come to me.
11:39That's true.
11:40But what care I?
11:42I'll get by as long as I have you.
11:46You finished it. Good job.
11:48Now I'm not going to be able to get this song out of my head
11:50for, like, the next week.
11:52You know, I almost feel like it'd be nice to try a murder case
11:59and forget about my legs
12:01and try a nice red-hot murder case someplace.
12:05Bye, Mom.
12:07Bye, Dad.
12:34I didn't cry at all the night he passed.
13:01And then I woke up that morning, and I told my wife,
13:04and she just put her head down.
13:06She's like, oh.
13:07You know, and she got, like, a little upset.
13:15And I was fine.
13:22And then I got in the car, and I was fine.
13:28And then we came to the office,
13:30and it was just like a total breakdown.
13:40Like being here.
13:50I still feel like there's energy around.
14:18I'll get by as long as I have you.
14:45There may be rain and darkness, too.
14:52I won't complain.
14:56I'll see you through.
