00:13Well this is my new character, also referred to as just chill guy, and that's kind of
00:17his whole deal.
00:18On October 4th, 2023, artist Philip Banks posted new art to Twitter and Instagram depicting
00:23this humanoid dog character, with the caption, my new character, his whole deal is he's
00:27a chill guy that low-key doesn't give a f**k.
00:30The post spread over the course of the year, acquiring several memes, and Phil even posted
00:33a jolly posting version around Christmas, but it wasn't until late August and early
00:37September of 2024 that my new character started garnering significant attention on TikTok.
00:42This seemed to stem from TikToker Blitzers posting several meme slideshows featuring
00:46the character, expanding and evolving the meme, inserting the cartoon dog into all kinds
00:51of other content, and even making an evil version.
00:53Soon, other memers on the platform started following the trend, resulting in a massive
00:57amount of content featuring my new character, including fan art, all kinds of memes, and
01:01cosplays.
01:02Many users took an ironic approach to chill guy, pairing the icon of nonchalance with
01:06soft piano music and audio that implies that maybe deep down, he really does give a f**k.
01:11I'm tired of trying to be someone that I'm not.
01:14One common soft piano sound associated with chill guy is called Hinoki Wood by Gia Margaret,
01:19and it's now been used in over 140,000 videos on TikTok.
01:22While the meme got pretty big in September, it had an enormous resurgence in November
01:26of 2024, so much so, in fact, that it earned its own meme coin, which is basically a cryptocurrency
01:31that uses the recognizability of a meme to boost its potential investment.
01:34Since it was created on October 5, 2024, the chill guy meme coin has reached a market cap
01:39of over $47.3 million.
01:41And yet, somehow, this chill guy has kept his chill, and inspired countless new iterations,
01:46including of course, chill girl, who definitely won't track down your address, she's just
01:50a chill girl trying to get to know you better.
01:52Users have started recreating versions of chill guy that represent themselves or other
01:55well-known characters with nonchalant vibes.
01:58The meme got so big that the artwork's original creator, Philip Banks, has copyrighted his
02:02new character under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or DMCA, in an effort to try
02:06to stop its use in viral marketing schemes for brands or other for-profit uses of the art.
