Uganda was part of the British Empire from 1894-1962. In the 1890s 32,000 "British" Indians were Brought to South East Africa under indentured labour contracts to work on the construction of the Ugandan Railway. Most surviving Indians returned to their homeland, but around 7,000 decided to stay. Colonial forces assigned one "Idi Amin" as a decorated General (Believing his Brutality would help them maintain control.
It's acknowledged that Power has an almost identical effect on the Brain as Cocaine. In 1972 The General ascended to his Presidential role and immediately Ordered the Expulsion of the 80,000 Individuals of Indian descent, leaving behind everything but $120 & 485lb (220kg) of luggage. These refugees sought safe haven in The UK, Canada, India, Kenya (30,000 Kenyans had been expelled in 1970) and Pakistan. Next on his "hit-list" were European owned businesses and Expats.
I recall my mother saying "That Idi Amin is a Madman". He became notorious as a serial rapist with a perchance for sadistic torture, spontaneous, erratic and obscure (frequently inexplicable) commands, decisions and condemnations.
The expulsions significantly damaged the Ugandan economy with many UN nations severing ties with the country. During this time, Ugandan soldiers engaged in theft and sexual violence with impunity.
When Amin's Regime collapsed in 1979 it's believed there were no more than 50 Indians in Uganda. In 1986 when Yoweri Museveni (Amin's successor) assumed power, thousands of Indians returned. The leader said "Gujerati's have played a lead role in Uganda's social and Industrial development".
Amin himself was eventually exiled, his final years restricted to the Remote Saudi Arabian sands. Post Mortem examination of the brain revealed that Syphilis had some part to play in his Insanity.
