00:00At the CMA Awards, hanging out with Dan Wilson. How are you feeling tonight, man?
00:03I'm excited. I'm getting kind of nervous and excited now.
00:06I mean, you got to be really excited. Song of the Year is a big one.
00:09And then for White Horse, that is 10 years old.
00:11So, like, how does that feel to have a song come back around like that a decade later?
00:15A decade later, it was like, you know, eventually if you write a lot of songs,
00:19you kind of say goodbye to a lot of them and say, OK, that's never going to happen.
00:23So when I heard the version, I was like, wait a minute, this is a great, this is a great,
00:27you know, rendition, let's say.
00:32And then when I watched it slowly climb the charts to number one and then be sort of
00:38continue being so huge, it's just sort of a crazy surprise.
00:41And Chris is such an amazing guy and such a talented guy.
00:44So how did that come about? Like, did you guys talk ahead of the time
00:46or did you just kind of see it blow up?
00:48Well, we had we've written a bunch of songs since we wrote White Horse
00:53and various things have happened to those songs.
00:56And I never really asked him about White Horse.
00:58I don't really follow up.
01:00I don't say, hey, you're sleeping on that one song, you know, what's wrong?
01:03Like, come on, that's a hit.
01:04Like, I don't say that.
01:06So, but, yeah, so it actually kind of caught me completely by surprise.
01:10That's so cool.
01:11And you've obviously worked with so many amazingly talented artists.
01:13So when you talk about, like, Taylor Swift or Adele,
01:16and you get to see them do these big, massive tours in Germany, in the Air Store.
01:19How does that feel to see your music go that far on those huge stages?
01:22To be at a gig with tens of thousands of people
01:27and they're all singing along to a song that I co-wrote is unbelievable.
01:30Like, it's super thrilling and it feels like,
01:34it feels like, oh, this is really connecting with people.
01:37Like, something important is happening here.
01:39And honestly, usually my motivations on the day of writing
01:43is just like how to make something sound cooler
01:45or how to make something that doesn't sound like other things, you know?
01:49Like, it's a lot more basic and just artistic.
01:53And then to see that something might connect on a huge level
01:55with a lot of people is so beautiful.
01:58I'm definitely connected with a lot of those Swift songs, let you know that.
02:01And then also, you know, Christmas is around the corner.
02:03So I'm asking everybody,
02:04what's a Christmas song that you love that gets you ready for the season?
02:07Oh, man, I like a whole bunch of Christmas songs.
02:09I really like, I really like some of the super classics,
02:13like Little Town of Bethlehem.
02:14Oh, you're going, okay, getting in there.
02:16The Lutheran stuff.
02:18And I really like Mariah Carey, All I Want for Christmas is You.
02:23I don't know the real title of that one.
02:24That's it.
02:25All I Want for Christmas is You.
02:26Super into that.
02:26Hot 100 number one song.
02:28I love that song.
02:28And also, I don't know, that's really hard to write a song
02:33that breaks into that small list of great Christmas songs.
02:37Well, now you got a job to do.
02:38Oh, shoot.
02:40He's going to come up with a Christmas hit song now.
