00:00How is surge pricing affecting our pubs?
00:04Well, according to the BBC, one particular pub in central London has been accused of
00:08charging customers an extra £2 a pint after 10pm. This meant a pint came to about £9.40.
00:14Mitchells & Butler's, which owns the O'Neill's pub in Soho, said the policy reflected a request
00:19from the police and local council to, quote, increase prices after 10pm to a level generally
00:25in line with the late night market. But on the back of this, Westminster Council said
00:30it, quote, does not require businesses to charge different prices for alcohol at different
00:36times when we grant licences.
00:38Furthermore, Green King is the latest pub chain to admit to using surge pricing, where
00:42pubs adjust the prices of drinks to capitalise on higher footfall at busier times. The chain
00:48reportedly increased its beer by 29% at a London pub ahead of England's football match
00:53against Ireland on Sunday 17th November. The pub reportedly said increased prices
00:59during high profile events cover the cost of additional staff.
