00:00Well, growth is the number one mission of this government,
00:03to turn around the poor performance of the last decade
00:06or so.
00:07Am I satisfied with the numbers published today?
00:10Of course not.
00:11I want growth to be stronger, to come sooner,
00:15and also to be felt by families right across the country, which
00:19is why in my Mansion House speech last night,
00:22I set out an ambitious set of reforms to the pension system
00:25to unlock long-term patient capital, up to 80 billion pounds
00:30of it, to invest in start-up and scale-up businesses
00:33and in the infrastructure needs of our country.
00:36Three-quarters of the university are
00:38expected to get into deficit next year,
00:41despite the rise in tuition fees.
00:45How worried are you that we are facing failing universities?
00:50Well, I'm really proud of the universities
00:53that we have in this country.
00:55And so many of our successful businesses
00:57spin out of those great universities.
01:00In the budget, we committed to long-term investment
01:04in research and development.
01:06And so much of that, of course, is done at our universities,
01:08as well as some of the measures set out by the Education
01:12Secretary, Bridget Philipson.
01:13Of course, we'll continue to work with our universities,
01:17who, after 14 years of conservative government,
01:20are in a very difficult financial situation.
