00:00In the upcoming 11th of Shom, until the 24th of November,
00:05it's the finals week of the competition where the young Filipino talents will be chosen
00:11and that is the National Music Competitions for Young Artists or NAMSIA.
00:16And we will be joined by the Artistic and Program Director of NAMSIA,
00:21Dr. Clement Acevedo, and the Classical Guitarist,
00:26Adric Cristobal, who also won the NAMSIA competition back then.
00:30Good morning to all of you and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:33Good morning. Thank you.
00:34Good morning and welcome back, Dr. Clement.
00:37Once again, for our fellow countrymen and our RSP who are not familiar with NAMSIA,
00:43what is it and what are the different categories under this?
00:48Well, NAMSIA is the National Music Competition for Young Artists.
00:53The mandate of this is to develop and to nurture music talents here in the Philippines.
01:03We will go to different places in the Philippines to find these talents.
01:10This competition is a combination of finding these talents
01:18and we bring them to Manila.
01:22We are going to perform at the Metropolitan Theater for this.
01:26We have many different categories.
01:31We have piano competition, violin, rondalia, choir, even traditional music expressions, and so on.
01:42Well, Dr. Clement, November 19 to 24, NAMSIA finals is almost one week.
01:48Why is it so long? And what will happen in the finals week?
01:53Yes, there are many competitions.
01:57NAMSIA is a little bit crazy because we organized many competitions.
02:03Also, the important thing to note here is that this is the finals week, which is also the National Music Week.
02:13In the finals week, because we have semifinals in September in the regions,
02:21NAMSIA will go to the regions and then we have the eliminations also as early as July.
02:28So, this is like the culmination of all these competitions.
02:33And so, we expect that it will be ready.
02:38Best out of the best.
02:40Yes, it's very rigorous.
02:43Regional, semifinals.
02:45And to Adric, you won last time in NAMSIA.
02:49What was the impact of your victory?
02:52Given that the process is very rigorous.
02:56Ed, how are you after winning?
02:58Well, first of all, good morning to everyone listening.
03:01And thank you for having us.
03:03I won NAMSIA during the pandemic.
03:06It was the online edition 2020.
03:10Of course, everything was closed.
03:12There was really no way to perform live.
03:15So, NAMSIA gave me that opportunity to not just compete.
03:19Fortunately, the results were good.
03:21But at least to still reach a wider audience during a time where everything was no live events.
03:28And NAMSIA also gave me a great opportunity to travel.
03:33From Ilocos Norte to Tacloban to China, we had some concerts.
03:38So, it's not just about winning.
03:41It's also about performing and interacting with other musicians.
03:46And of course, when I was applying for university positions,
03:50NAMSIA was a big plus for me.
03:53Of course.
03:54Because even though there were other awards, the national competition was different.
03:58Which was a big help when it was time to start the career.
04:03Okay, but Adric, let's go back to your love for music when you were a kid.
04:10Why did you choose classical guitar as your forte and not other instruments?
04:19Well, I tried playing the violin and the piano.
04:24But I also loved rock music.
04:27So, I was experimenting with electric and acoustic.
04:31But at some point, I also looked for formal training.
04:34And there's no better training than classical training.
04:38Not just in technique, but also in musicianship.
04:42Your knowledge on how to create and perform.
04:46So, when I started playing classical guitar, I wasn't used to it.
04:50Because I'm also ADHD.
04:52So, I have a tendency to change.
04:56But since classical guitar, I haven't changed much.
05:00So, until my master's degree in Europe, I stayed with classical guitar.
05:05So, you really love classical.
05:07I think so, yes.
05:10Alright.
05:11Dr. Clement, what is your message to young people who have a talent for music?
05:16Or those who want to play music?
05:18And also, please invite our co-artists who were supported by NAMSEA in 2024.
05:23Yes, thank you.
05:25So, I would like to say that we all have a talent for music.
05:30We just need to find it.
05:32Find your talent, Doc Clement.
05:34It's hard to find.
05:36Doc Clement can do it.
05:38I'm not saying that out of my own...
05:41Dr. Suzuki, Sinichi Suzuki said that talent is to be taught.
05:47So, everyone has a talent.
05:50And what's important is to find a trainer.
05:54Luckily, DepEd has all of these wonderful music teachers.
06:00They are our partners in NAMSEA.
06:03In bringing all of these kids together.
06:06Their support is huge.
06:08So, the school-based Rondalia, for example, is school-based.
06:12Choir is also school-based.
06:14And we have these trainers at DepEd.
06:16So, I suggest that kids should go to your school and join.
06:22So, it's free?
06:23Yes, of course.
06:24In collaboration with DepEd?
06:25Yes.
06:26That's their music activity in school.
06:29Alright.
06:30Andrick, can you give us a sample of your piece?
06:34So, we can watch your performance.
06:38I'll play a small excerpt by Constancio de Guzman.
06:41Arranged by Florente Aguilar, a U.S. based guitarist.
06:45But from the Philippines.
06:46Do you remember?
06:48Yes.
08:00I remember the nostalgic music from the past.
08:23Do you remember?
08:24Yes, there's a difference.
08:27When it comes to live, classic music, arts and craftsmanship, you'll really feel it.
08:32Alright, once again, thank you so much, Adric Cristobal and of course, Dr. Clement Acevedo of NAMCIA.
08:39Watch out for the cars, we'll support you.
08:42So, thank you very much.
08:44Thank you very much.
