00:00The country's deaf youth were given a chance to show their skills through sports.
00:06This is because the 2024 National Deaf Games were held.
00:10This is the story of Rafael Bandaire.
00:14At the initiative of the Philippine Sports Federation for the Deaf,
00:18the first National Deaf Games in the Philippines were held this past Saturday and Sunday.
00:25This event was supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation.
00:31In this debut edition, five different sports were hosted by dozens of participants from different parts of Metro Manila.
00:40The National Deaf Games Chairperson, Henry Bibo-Perey, was pleased that the deaf youth community was interested.
00:47We're very happy, we're very satisfied with what's going on right now with the deaf, especially with the deaf youth.
00:54We're encouraging the deaf to join this first national event.
01:02Because as you know, most of our society always look down on the deaf.
01:06So we're trying to promote and encourage the deaf because many of them are getting depressed.
01:13So we encourage our deaf youth to join sports.
01:18Perey also believes that the participation of young people like 24-year-old Erica Barrios is a big thing for development.
01:28I'm really excited to join this program because I meet many friends, I learn many things, and I develop.
01:36Also, I want to try in the future to join an international event.
01:42One of the technical directors of the event, Patrick Espinas, hopes that events like the National Deaf Games will become a reality
01:51so that para-athletes can discover that the Philippines can play a role in the international stage.
01:58Hopefully, we can also discover athletes who can compete nationally and internationally.
02:05Following the successful success of the 2024 National Deaf Games,
02:09according to the organizers, their target is to have more participants from different parts of the country next year.
02:16Rafael Bandayrel for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
