00:00Today is Remembrance Day 2024, and the country is set to come together to celebrate the lives
00:04and memories of the countless soldiers that laid down their lives to fight for our freedom.
00:07It's also the 80th anniversary of a number of key conflicts that turned the tides of
00:11the world wars. Firstly, the Battle of Monte Cassino was a fight for Rome. It was the name
00:14given to a combined four military assaults against German forces who'd set up a blockade
00:18in the nearby mountains. The Allies took the most substantial hit to life with 55,000 dying.
00:23This is also the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the Normandy landings, which were so important
00:28in turning the tide of the Second World War. Over 10,000 Allies lost their lives in the
00:32victory. It's the 80th anniversary of the battles of Kohima and Imphal, both of which
00:35were vital in preventing the Japanese incursion into India, with 16,000 Allies dying in some
00:41of the most important but lesser known conflicts of the Second World War. It also marks the
00:44end of Operation Market Garden, which was the mission to carve a path through German-occupied
00:48Netherlands towards Northern Germany, as well as the Battle of Scheldt, which freed up Antwerp
00:52port to allow Allied reinforcement and supplies a path to the front. Those two conflicts cost
00:57nearly 40,000 Allied lives. We will remember them.
