00:00 Thursday, 6th June 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings, perhaps better known

00:08 as D-Day. The D-Day landings took place on five separate beaches of Normandy, wherein

00:13 more than 155,000 troops, mostly from the UK, US and Canada, with the support from places

00:19 like France and Poland, played their part in the largest seaborne invasion in history.

00:24 The beaches were given code names like Gold, Juno and Sword. As thousands of troops landed

00:29 on the beaches by day, by the time midnight fell, the Allies had secured their beachheads

00:33 and pushed further inland. Sadly, as many as 4,400 troops died from the combined Allied

00:39 forces. Up to 9,000 troops were reported to be wounded or missing. Whilst the total German

00:45 casualties on the day are unknown, it's estimated to be between 4,000 and 9,000 men.

00:50 In light of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Britain hopes to pay homage to the fortitude

00:55 of the British veterans who played a crucial role in the pivotal Second World War.
