00:00Halal Expo is an annual event in Canada that aims to show the best halal products and services from different parts of the world.
00:09And for the first time, Halal Expo Philippines will be held here in the country.
00:14Its goal is to promote halal products and give knowledge about halal certification to Filipino consumers.
00:22We will also see different products here that are all certified halal.
00:26Let's explore the new opportunities in the growing halal industry.
00:30Joining us today, the president of Halal Expo Philippines, Nasser Dib, and the CEO of Halal Expo Philippines, Grace Aguilar.
00:37Welcome to Rise and Shine, Filipinas!
00:39Good morning!
00:40Thank you for hosting us.
00:41Thank you for being with us this morning.
00:44Okay, Sir Nasser, tell us more about this Halal Expo Philippines.
00:49Well, the idea started when we launched the first ever North American Halal Expo in Canada.
00:57And when we invited the Philippines, the first Philippine company was IDCP, the biggest certifier, to be part of the show, the debut show in Canada.
01:08And we talked to them and we found that there are opportunities there.
01:12So we flew into the Philippines and we found out that the government is working very hard to push the initiative of enhancing halal and making the Philippines more halal friendly.
01:26And we talked to different officials, different certifier associations, including DTI, NCMF, and others.
01:33And we found out there's a big opportunity and a growing number of Filipino Muslims without enough supply for the halal.
01:41So that's where the idea came from and we launched the first ever Halal Expo Philippines, just like in Malaysia and Indonesia and Canada.
01:50And this will be, hopefully, the fourth most important halal event of the world.
01:56And that's the reason why we're working very closely with DTI and other associations to make it the best place to actually enhance the halal industry here.
02:07When will this happen, the expo?
02:09Yeah, it's going to be on November 14 and 16.
02:13During that time, we're going to have all the fashion shows, of course the trade shows, and halal awareness.
02:22We're going to have a workshop.
02:23Where is this?
02:24At WTC, World Trade Center.
02:27World Trade Center.
02:28Yes, it's the spot of all.
02:30So others could join from different areas here in the Philippines because it's a World Trade Center.
02:33Yes.
02:34Some have that connotation, halal.
02:36We thought it was just food.
02:38But it goes beyond food, right?
02:40Yes.
02:41There are a lot of products under the halal category.
02:42Yes.
02:43So what can we expect?
02:44What are the products to be featured there?
02:46So the products are going to be, as you said, it's not only the food, but it's also the beverages, the halal franchise, halal investment, logistics, cosmetics, supplements.
03:01So everything that you said is halal is going to be there.
03:05Modest fashion, of course.
03:08So halal is an ecosystem.
03:10It's not just a lifestyle that people have to live by.
03:14It's ethical.
03:15It's healthy.
03:16It's the best way for, not only for Muslims, for everybody to go by, even if it's done in business, in finance, in so many things, even in banking.
03:26It's a way where people can feel.
03:29It's the old way, the way it's supposed to be, but things have changed.
03:32But now we're trying to revive that spirit and revive that lifestyle.
03:37Okay.
03:38Since you've mentioned that there's a connotation and misconception Filipinos were after for knowing that halal foods is just for the Muslims.
03:47But how are we going to engage those people who are non-Muslims and can still utilize different halal foods and products?
03:55Yeah.
03:56See, the thing is, first, we have to understand what's halal.
03:59Halal is a very humane practice.
04:05The way you slaughter the meat.
04:06There are so many rules to that.
04:09I'm not a certifier, but I can give you a general perspective that when you slaughter the meat, you have to make sure it's healthy.
04:15It's not having a poked eye or bad limbs or things.
04:22So you have to make sure that it's healthy.
04:24And the way you slaughter it, you have to be humane.
04:26You have to make sure that you do it in a very quick manner so the animal will not be tortured.
04:31So the process.
04:33And it's also healthier because when you do it in a certain place, it takes all the blood out.
04:41Oh, there's a culture in there.
04:43It's not only the culture.
04:45It's the way that makes it much more healthier and much more humane for an animal to be tortured.
04:54Okay.
04:55Going back to Ms. Grace, why is it important to have an expo like this here in the Philippines?
05:01We do this platform for the manufacturers and buyers to connect.
05:07And of course, other companies who want to be in that industry.
05:12So it's also, of course...
05:20For the economy. How will this help?
05:22For the economy.
05:23And because the government now is mandating the halal industry.
05:30So this platform is going to help for the small business to enter in this industry.
05:39And then it's like the preparation also to go beyond.
05:44To go globally.
05:46To echo what my colleague said, it's also going to help educate and enhance the standard of halal.
05:51In a country like the Philippines, where it's mostly minorities, there are ways to make it standardized.
06:00By education.
06:01Also bringing new products that have never been in the market.
06:04Because there's a big demand for halal products in the Philippines.
06:07And short supply.
06:08There are manufacturers in the Philippines, but we still need more from the international to come in.
06:12So that's the reason why platforms like trade shows bring people together.
06:16Like a marketplace.
06:17And also enhance the economy.
06:20We've seen even the small businesses who are doing halal, for example.
06:23It happened in Canada.
06:25We had small shops.
06:27And they started small.
06:30And now they turned into a factory.
06:32Because they came to our show.
06:34They met companies like Walmart and Costco.
06:36Like for you guys, SM and all the big names.
06:39And when they start purchasing from them in a big quantity, they have to grow.
06:43And that's where the trade show plays a good role.
06:46It attracts those big buyers from like Wilbenson.
06:54Because they're not going to go to a consumer event.
06:56They want to go to a professional platform where they can meet the manufacturer.
07:00And source the product.
07:02So it actually helps local and international companies to grow as well.
07:05And also to improve the standard by education.
07:10I've seen that you guys are going to be doing a conference as well.
07:13Because we've seen the education part.
07:15Information dissemination.
07:17About the awareness.
07:19About this by many Filipinos.
07:21So how this would help.
07:23Not only the trade show.
07:25We've seen here the conferences.
07:27And what Halal Expo has done in terms of the investments.
07:29For the last 6 or 7 years, DTI has been doing a great conference called the Halal Conference.
07:35And when we approached them, we said you guys are doing a great job.
07:37But it would be great if we integrate that into our trade show.
07:42Instead of us doing an additional conference.
07:44Why can't we complement instead of compete?
07:46So they loved the idea.
07:48And they jumped in the wagon.
07:50And now they're doing their 7th annual Halal Conference.
07:53Along with us.
07:55Organizing with DTI.
07:57Mr. Alin is championing this.
07:59With the secretary being in charge of the whole DTI.
08:03It's going to be a great thing.
08:05We are also bringing speakers from local and international.
08:08New topics.
08:11Panel discussions.
08:13And how to have a dialogue.
08:15With the industry stakeholders.
08:17Not just to educate.
08:19Also to network.
08:21To connect.
08:23To have a proper dialogue.
08:25Instead of just having the education as well.
08:27Talking about Halal.
08:29Probably most of our viewers are curious.
08:31How can they get Halal certification?
08:35To become a certified.
08:38The company has to see compliance with Sharia law.
08:46And also look for the good certifying buddies.
08:50Which is now in our show.
08:52We have couples of big certifiers.
08:56Who's going to be.
08:58If the company is going to come.
09:00They can talk to them.
09:02And apply and see.
09:04That's why we have the awareness.
09:06So we will educate them.
09:08How to connect with the certifiers.
09:14And also the awareness of being Halal.
09:16In the industry.
09:18She mentioned about the certifiers.
09:20To add to my colleague.
09:22Those certifiers.
09:24A lot of them we have in our show.
09:26They are very selective.
09:28They are connected to the global organization.
09:30The Halal world council.
09:32And they do training.
09:35In other countries.
09:37To make sure they follow the standards.
09:39And the compliance of the Sharia law.
09:41And how to do the certification.
09:43So there are ways.
09:45Of how to navigate into that.
09:47And make sure that you are working.
09:49With the proper trusted certifiers.
09:51That's why the show is important.
09:53To come and learn and compare.
09:55And see which one works for you.
09:57If you want to have your product certified.
09:59There will be also seminars on that.
10:01Education to talk about.
10:04How to verify and make sure.
10:06That everything has to be within the standard of Halal.
10:08We're hoping many people will join here.
10:10Please invite our RSP.
