00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today, after waiting so long, so so long, you know who you are
00:07in the comments, we are taking a look at every Mario Party ranked.
00:13Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:18the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:21Man, there's gonna be some angry people probably.
00:26Mario Party has been around for quite a long time now, and over the years, it's seen a
00:31large amount of sequels and spinoffs that have introduced new ideas with each iteration.
00:36Some were a blast, while others were a complete buzzkill.
00:40Do note that we will not be including the top 100, as that is only a minigame collection,
00:46and we're definitely not counting the e-reader card game, cause you know, who even played
00:51that?
00:52Really?
00:53Who did?
00:54Which Mario Party do you consider to be the best?
00:57Clearly, everybody has their own favorite, so sound off in the comments below, and please,
01:01be civil about it.
01:03Number 16, Mario Party.
01:13Normally for these kinds of lists, we tend to throw the first game somewhere in the middle,
01:17or even at the very top in some circumstances.
01:20When it comes to the first Mario Party though, it's fair to say that this one is the worst.
01:25For starters, the game's economy is absolutely brutal, as you'll see Bowser way more frequently
01:31than you'll see somebody nab a star.
01:33No joke, in my game, no one got a star until turn 12 out of 20.
01:40Turn 12!
01:41Then you have the minigames, which range from terribly unbalanced, to actually inflicting
01:46physical pain.
01:48Yes, back when the game first launched in 1998, players reported getting their hands
01:53lacerated from having to furiously rotate the analog stick for some of the minigames.
01:58Nintendo faced a lawsuit, which forced them to make protective gloves to send to players
02:03who requested them.
02:04And by the way, is it just me, or does anyone else find it weird that we're bringing back
02:10these minigames for Mario Party Superstars?
02:13And there's even a blatant warning saying, try not to hurt yourselves.
02:20Nintendo doesn't want to make those gloves again, man.
02:37The ninth installment in the mainline games was arguably the most controversial title
02:42in the entire franchise, and deservedly so.
02:45See, when it comes to Mario Party, there's only one way to play the game.
02:50Be ultra competitive and get salty when friends steal stars, or when Luigi cheats, it's
02:56all circumstantial.
02:57MP9 took some of the competitive nature away by shoving everybody into a tiny frickin'
03:03car and forced them to move as one unit.
03:07Considering how long it had been since Mario Party 8 had launched by this point, this was
03:13appalling to diehard fans to see the franchise return under this form.
03:18It may not have caused physical pain like the first game, but it certainly caused some
03:22emotional pain.
03:38Oh my god, I remember playing this one, it was so bad.
03:42The 3DS had so many amazing titles that we were itching for a new Mario Party on the
03:47handheld.
03:48Alas, Island Tour told us we were better off without one.
03:53While it was admittedly not as horrifying as our previous two entries, Island Tour is
03:58by far the most boring of the franchise, and that's not how a Mario Party game should
04:04be described.
04:06It simply does nothing interesting, and even when asking for basic gameplay, it's uninspiring
04:13to the max.
04:14The boards are lacking in charm and personality, the mini-games are mind-numbing, and the overall
04:19experience is entirely forgettable.
04:22I believe if there was a movie quote to describe this, Scott Pilgrim said it best.
04:27Oh man, this sucks.
04:29Shock.
04:30I'm gonna go pee due to boredom.
04:36Star Rush.
04:43The franchise was given a second chance on the 3DS, but it wasn't that much better.
04:47Now, the core Mario Party formula had practically jumped off a balcony in a sad attempt to get
04:52into the pool, only to crash face-first into the pavement.
04:57Rather than play as different Mario characters and run around a board collecting stars, you
05:02know, like every Mario Party is, Star Rush sees you and your friends control Toads as
05:10you recruit the other Mario characters to assist in mini-games and collect stars.
05:18There was no mode for veteran players to tap into and play a real game of Mario Party.
05:23That isn't to say the game was entirely awful, it does hold a few interesting ideas.
05:28The problem is that it doesn't make the experience anything special.
05:32It's just that one Mario Party that wasn't, you know, Mario Party.
05:42Number 12, Mario Party Advance.
05:48Honestly, this one was just confusing.
05:53Yes, this was a Mario Party game made for the Game Boy Advance, a handheld console that
06:00was made primarily for single-player games on the go and required lengthy connection
06:05setup in order to play any games with friends.
06:09How could Mario Party possibly exist on the GBA?
06:13Well, you turn it into a single-player package of mini-games and fetch quests, run around
06:19a board solving ridiculously easy mysteries, being an errand boy for the different Mario
06:24baddies you hold vendettas with, and earn gadgets you'll grow bored of after playing
06:29for only a minute.
06:30It isn't the most offensive game in the series, but it's also one that nobody missed
06:34out on.
06:35And I'm speaking this as someone who clocked in several dozen hours on this game.
06:41I am very ashamed to admit that.
06:48Number 11, Mario Party 10.
06:57The tenth installment, and the only one made for the Wii U, is very much a you-love-it-or-you-hate-it
07:02kind of game.
07:03On one hand, you have the same gameplay as Mario Party 9, where all players are once
07:07again crammed into the stupid car and forced to awkwardly stare at each other in between
07:12the trash talk.
07:14On the other hand, you actually have something interesting here to warrant a fifth player.
07:18While the main four are vying and bickering for star points, a fifth player can take control
07:23of Bowser, acting as the chaos agent, and wreaking havoc by tricking players into choosing
07:28paths, grabbing extra dice for himself, and just being an overall jerk.
07:33In other words, it's perfect for your more sadistic pals.
07:40Number 10, Mario Party 8.
07:49Compared to the entries we've already covered so far, 8 really isn't all that terrible.
07:54Not only does it give us an excuse to boot up the Wii from time to time, like the several
07:58other Nintendo games it did, but it also houses quite a bit of entertainment, and that's
08:02not considering any minigames where one might be making questionably inappropriate gestures,
08:07Mario.
08:08The boards here all have unique themes, from pirates and haunted mansions to an ever-shifting
08:12train and ventures in hotel management a la Monopoly.
08:16Sure, 8 doesn't hold the best collection of minigames, looking at you Rudder Madness,
08:21flip the chimp, however, for what it does have, it does it fairly well.
08:26Now, excuse me while I go be a 12 year old and laugh at Mario and the minigame menus.
08:37Number 9, Mario Party DS.
08:47If you absolutely needed a Mario Party experience on a handheld device, this was the one that
08:51managed to replicate the core experience.
08:53Though every map had a different goal just like the previous two games, it was still
08:57the formula we were well familiar with.
09:00It also boasted a hearty helping of minigames that fully utilized the capabilities of the
09:04Nintendo DS.
09:06On top of that, it was extremely friendly for multiplayer, requiring only one user to
09:11own a copy and allowing other players to participate via DS download play.
09:16Now this was how you threw a pocket-sized party.
09:25Number 8, Mario Party 4.
09:33When Mario Party made the jump from Nintendo 64 to GameCube, we weren't expecting such
09:37a big changeup in boards and mechanics.
09:40Gone were the days of skeleton keys and Bowser phones.
09:43Now we had Mega and Mini Mushrooms to worry about, and these two presented an interesting
09:48way to navigate the board, often providing access to shortcuts.
09:52However, one could argue the design of the boards forced you to rely on these a little
09:56too much, and because of their sizes, it caused games to drag out way longer than we might
10:02have liked.
10:03Still, it was a solid start to a new era of Mario Party, and it's still fun to go back
10:08to every once in a while.
10:15Number 7, Super Mario Party Jamboree.
10:24So here's the funny thing about Jamboree.
10:26This is an excellent Mario Party, and it is the most balanced game the franchise has ever
10:31seen, excluding just a couple of minigames, debatably.
10:34The five new boards bring fresh ideas that force you to rethink your usual strategies
10:39and adopt their new concepts.
10:41It's also pleasant to see new minigames meshing with remastered versions of older
10:45minigames from series past.
10:48But balance is really what's keeping this game from breaking into the top five.
10:52While it does make the game enjoyable for everyone and keep things fair, Jamboree is
10:57missing that element of random, dumb luck that made the games hilariously frustrating.
11:02In other words, your enjoyment of Jamboree may depend on how much you value the older
11:07games.
11:14Number 6, Super Mario Party.
11:20The first to arrive on Switch, Super Mario Party brought the franchise back in full force.
11:26With MP9, 10, Island Tour, and Star Rush having flubbed the series, Super reminds us what
11:31Mario Party is all about, grabbing stars, strategizing dice rolls, and yelling at friends.
11:38As for the minigames, they were some of the best we had seen in a long, long time, and
11:43they utilized the Joy-Cons technology in very fun and unique ways.
11:47The only problem Super had was its questionable balancing, specifically when it came to allies.
11:53Yeah, even if someone gets one or two allies, the game is basically over thanks to the buff
11:58and dice rolls.
11:59We can't look at this and say it's fair.
12:09Number 5, Mario Party 7.
12:147 was the first to start distinguishing the boards from one another in terms of gameplay.
12:21Sure, they were all about grabbing the most stars, but each board brought a different
12:26Ascend to the top of a mountain, find the star hidden in one of three chests, invest
12:30in windmills, or even play a board that's all about using chain chomps to steal stars
12:35from each other.
12:36There was variety here to freshen things up without deviating from the core experience.
12:41Our only gripe was the inclusion of mic minigames, which drastically slowed down the pacing.
12:46Yeah, you know we turned that crap off.
12:56Number 4, Mario Party 5.
13:05In all honesty, 5 was not particularly well-received at launch and saw a mixed bag of reviews,
13:11but so has the entire series, for the most part.
13:14Mario Party 5 brought a new spin on the formula that added a bit of chaos and strategy to
13:19the boards, capsules.
13:21This time, players could use capsules on themselves or alter the board by throwing them down on
13:26a nearby space.
13:27Sounds basic on paper, but when you factor in the positions of your opponents, where
13:32the star is, and how to dissuade players from a particular area, Mario Party 5 becomes a
13:37more maniacal and devious game of wits and skill.
13:41Plus, it holds an excellent selection of minigames, from Fish Upon a Star and Coney Island to
13:46Night Light Fright and Panic Pinball.
13:49Plus, if you really want to kill a house party, boot up Mario Party 5 and just proceed to
13:54annihilate everybody.
13:56That's what I ended up doing at one point.
14:03Number 3, Mario Party 3.
14:12You only need one reason to call 3 one of the greats.
14:16Waluigi!
14:17No, in all seriousness, 3 is a riot from start to finish.
14:22Not only was it the same Mario Party formula, but it was improved with slightly better balance
14:26and significantly better visuals.
14:29There were also a collection of minigames that required more skill and not too much
14:32luck.
14:33Messy Memory, Ice Rink Risk, Boulder Ball, and Rockin' Raceway are just some of the
14:38ones that'll stick with you after the party is over.
14:41This was also the first time solo players were given more reason to play 3, as it came
14:46with a story mode, which would eventually become a series mainstay mode.
14:55Number 2, Mario Party 6.
15:05Of the GameCube era, Mario Party 6 was the best one.
15:10For starters, you had the same chaotic vibe brought by the capsules, even better minigames,
15:15and the first secret character in the series, Toadette.
15:18On top of that, boards were given a bit more of a puzzle element to them through the introduction
15:23of the day and night cycle.
15:25Borrowed from a board in a previous game, which you'll see in a little bit, boards
15:29would spend three turns under day or night before switching over to the other for three
15:33turns again, rinse and repeat.
15:36This required players to approach boards differently and consider their actions a bit more carefully.
15:41It wasn't just a blatant race to the star anymore, it was time to be crafty and cunning.
15:52Number 1, Mario Party 2.
16:02What can we say, Mario Party 2 is the definitive experience of the series, and encapsulates
16:08everything you need to know about the franchise.
16:12What is Mario Party all about?
16:13Well, I've said it all video, it's about the colorful worlds, their charming music,
16:18the different events and items that mix things up just enough to where they aren't obnoxious,
16:23and it's about the minigames that are sometimes too difficult for specific players, but still
16:28manageable.
16:29Plus, everyone's got costumes!
16:31No other game in the franchise has them!
16:34It's hard, it runs right between skill and luck, the AI cheats sometimes, but of all
16:39of the Mario Parties, 2 was the one that captures the essence of the franchise, for better or
16:46for worse.
16:47And we wouldn't want it any other way.
