00:30 Yoshi's Safari
00:32 [music]
00:39 In 1992, Nintendo released a follow-up to the NES Zapper Gun with the Super Scope.
00:44 "Introducing Super Scope 6. Remote-powered and laser-accurate."
00:50 And one of the games to make use of the peripheral was Yoshi's Safari.
00:55 In Yoshi's Safari, we technically don't play as Yoshi, but as Mario riding Yoshi.
01:00 With the Super Scope, players make their way through 12 unique levels set in Jewelry Land.
01:06 The story doesn't stray far from classic Mario games.
01:09 Bowser kidnaps King Fret and Prince Pine, and it's up to the duo to save them.
01:14 While Yoshi's Safari may not be the first game that comes to mind when you think of Yoshi games,
01:19 it was early on in Yoshi's career of starring in his own games.

01:29 Yoshi
01:30 [music]
01:36 The first game starring the adorable green dinosaur, Yoshi was released on both the NES and the Game Boy,
01:43 and is a falling block puzzle game.
01:45 Each piece represents an iconic Mario baddie.
01:48 Simply swap rows of the baddies to create matches,
01:51 similar to other puzzle games like Tetris, you can't let your rows get too high or you'll lose.
01:56 Yoshi shells will fall and can be used to take out a whole row of enemies,
02:00 and when the eggs are connected, a Yoshi will hatch.
02:03 The higher your score, the faster baddies will fall, and the game can get quite difficult.
02:09 [music]
02:13 Yoshi's Cookie
02:14 [music]
02:18 Released on NES, Game Boy, and SNES, with the SNES having one more gameplay mode,
02:25 Yoshi's Cookie is another puzzle game, but instead of falling blocks, it's a tile matching game.
02:31 All versions have Action Mode, which has players complete levels which get harder as you progress,
02:36 and a Versus Mode that lets players go head to head.
02:39 The SNES version has an additional Versus Mode that would let you go head to head with a computer player,
02:45 and Puzzle Mode with predefined puzzles that players must clear with a set number of moves.
02:50 [music]
02:56 Yoshi Topsy-Turvy
02:58 [music]
03:02 Yoshi's Island is under attack by Bowser, and he turns all the egglings into apples.
03:07 Yoshi Topsy-Turvy has very unique gameplay with the use of gyroscopic controls with the gyros built into the cartridge.
03:15 While you can control Yoshi with traditional controls, move Yoshi around with the D-pad,
03:20 A is jump and B is to use your tongue, the gyro controls let you tilt the world,
03:25 which is handy when it comes to moving boulders or the Shy Guys ships throughout the levels.
03:30 If you find the game a little too easy, you could always try Hard Mode,
03:33 which is playing it on the GBA player on the GameCube.
03:37 [music]
03:42 Yoshi's New Island
03:44 [music]
03:50 New Island had the potential to be a top-tier Yoshi game, but the controls knocked it down a peg.
03:56 New Island takes place directly after the events of Super Mario World 2, Yoshi's Island.
04:02 So that means Baby Mario is back!
04:04 At first, New Island will feel great as the gameplay is similar to the first Yoshi's Island.
04:10 But when vehicles are introduced, that's where the controls fall short.
04:14 There is something that felt a little off when moving the 3DS around while controlling hot air balloons or submarines.
04:21 Not only does it feel weird, it also interferes with the 3D aspect of the game since the 3DS's 3D
04:27 worked only when playing still and not moving the console.
04:32 [music]
04:38 Yoshi Touch and Go
04:40 [music]
04:45 How can you make a Yoshi game that heavily relies on touch controls?
04:49 Yoshi Touch and Go does just that, and does it well.
04:53 Yoshi is constantly on the move, in fact, we don't control him at all.
04:57 Our main goal is to help Yoshi cross hazards by drawing clouds which can open up new paths.
05:03 If we draw a circle around an enemy, we'll trap them in a bubble.
05:07 The top screen has other enemies that can be taken down by throwing eggs at them.
05:11 Touch and Go is a great example of how gimmicks can help create something fun and came at the peak hype for the DS.
05:18 [music]
05:22 Yoshi's Story
05:25 [music]
05:29 The Yoshis are living a happy life on Yoshi Island, and Baby Bowser is quite jealous.
05:35 Baby Bowser steals their super happy tree and traps the island in a book.
05:40 Six Yoshis venture off to retrieve the super happy tree and bring Joy back to Yoshi's Island.
05:46 Yoshi's Story plays like a traditional platformer, moving left and right, find 30 fruits placed throughout each level.
05:53 Each Yoshi has specific fruits they prefer.
05:56 If you're the yellow Yoshi, you'll prefer bananas.
05:59 If you're the red Yoshi, you'll prefer apples.
06:02 Which will give you more health and more points.
06:05 And somehow, Yoshi's Story has both one of the best and one of the most annoying theme songs in video games.
06:11 [music]
06:16 Yoshi's Woolly World
06:19 [music]
06:24 A spiritual successor to Kirby's Epic Yarn, Yoshi's Woolly World follows the same formula.
06:30 Have a cute Nintendo character, and make them even cuter by turning them into a yarn version of themselves.
06:37 Another traditional platformer full of charm, everything in the world is created with yarn or wool.
06:43 Which for some reason, has the already cute world of Yoshi games, and cranks it up to 100.
06:49 Woolly World, while easy, is still a great game to at least play through once, mainly due to the detail in all the characters.
06:57 Woolly World also has pretty cool amiibo support. Each amiibo will unlock other versions of Yoshi.
07:03 [music]
07:08 Yoshi's Crafted World
07:11 [music]
07:14 Why are so many Yoshi games so cute?
07:17 Crafted World continues that trait by having the whole world created with crafting supplies.
07:22 Just like Woolly World, Crafted World is a bit on the easier side.
07:27 Most enemies won't attack you, and if you fall in a hole, the game picks you right back up.
07:32 Crafted World is full of replayability as well.
07:35 Each world having the classic flowers to find, red coins, that are actually well hidden, and scavenger hunt style missions.
07:43 Crafted World is a beautiful game, and it's super cute seeing how everything is made with simple craft supplies.
07:49 This is a great game to play if you have a younger gamer with you too.
07:53 [music]
07:57 Yoshi's Island DS
08:00 [music]
08:05 Yoshi's Island DS takes everything from the original Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island game, and doubles down on it.
08:12 The game is a classic platformer, and although it's on the DS, it doesn't use the touchscreen for moment to moment gameplay.
08:19 The touchscreen can be used for navigating menus and minigames, but when you're playing the main story, they're nowhere to be found.
08:26 Which is a good thing, since gimmicks can ruin some games.
08:30 If you weren't a fan of Mario's crying in the original game, be warned.
08:35 There are even more crying babies in the game with the addition of Baby Peach, Baby Donkey Kong, and Baby Wario.
08:41 Who probably has a smelly diaper.
08:44 Each baby will change the gameplay.
08:46 Baby Wario has a magnet which will attract anything made of metal.
08:50 Baby Donkey Kong can push heavy objects, and Baby Peach can use her umbrella.
08:55 [baby sounds]
09:00 Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island
09:04 [music]
09:08 One of the best Super Mario games, let alone the best Yoshi game, Yoshi's Island set the groundwork of what a Yoshi game should be.
09:17 Yoshi's Island is essentially a 2D collect-a-thon, with each level having many hidden collectibles.
09:23 Each level has 30 stars, 20 red coins, and 5 flowers.
09:28 If you're able to collect all the items in the level, you will unlock a bonus challenge and extra levels.
09:34 Yoshi must take Baby Mario to defeat Bowser and rescue both Baby Luigi and the stork, that will deliver the babies to their parents.
09:43 Yoshi's Island has diverse levels, with each world having classic world tropes like ice levels, fire levels, jungle levels, etc.
09:51 It's easy to see why it has become fans' favorite Yoshi game, even with Baby Mario crying all the time.
09:58 [baby crying]
